I finally understand what others said, "darkly cute". It's indeed cute, yet has very dark background. Full of emotions: Heartwarming, sweet, painful, happy, and fun experience at the same time. Author has detail explanation about the world and +anima throughout the story, and it makes everything just make sense. I think Cooro's personality make him imperfect happy-good-typical-shonen character, but perfect heroine for the manga. I'm glad Husky is a guy mermaid, and Nana is a bat girl (not ordinary, huh). And Senri the bear! Aww, he's the oldest in the group, yet the cutest one for me >v<.

Wonderful plot and art. A MUST READ.

Tone-deaf.

Besides the lack of any meaningful story resolution or even just character development, the story is also amazingly jarring in its superficial treatment of serious topics: the story deal with topics like slavery and racism, and yet even the slavers look baby-faced and well-meaning.

Whichever age group this series was aiming for, it wildly missed its mark.

Childish manga with dark themes.

(Before you ask, this is meant as a NON-SPOILER post for those who are not sure if they want to read or not & to see my opinion and recommendations)

It's a manga about kids, what can be dark about it? EVERYTHING OF COURSE.

So we're introduced to Cooro, an energetic +Anima who is looking to gather up other +Anima to form a gang. The difference from other gangs is that it's a group of friends, and nothing more. We meet people like Husky, a feminine looking guy who happens to be a sire-- I mean fish (Hey author, why in the world didn't you make him a girl?).. Anyways, we got the mysterious Senri who is a bear +Anima that rarely talks but cares for his friends, and Nana, a bat who is the only girl in the group (and you make Nana the girl of the story too author. Where you trying to break stereotypes here? owai--).

So you remember those dark themes? Oh, you've also seen the tags? Well yep, that's exactly the story. A fluffy light hearted story with themes of racism, hatred for different, using others for personal advantages (For those who read, I refer to Cooro's REAL purpose of the group). Still, it doesn't take away from the story. Everyone's purpose is pure, and through each individual character arc we further understand why characters act like they do.

Enough talking, here's a summary (+ = positive, - = negative):
+Good story with great character development
+Dark undertones & themes which viewers who are into plot can easily identify
+Group of friends doing stuff friends do, no lovey-dovey stuff here

-The ending. They should have expanded more on what the hell was going on on the last few chapters.

For recommendations, I'll have to go to something a bit far-fetched (I've only started recording the mangas I've read recently) Defense Devil. Similar themes of people who are looked as evil and bad being the complete opposite.

A mature manga that is so freaking cute i cried

This manga is really fluffy, and the plot is probably blurred for many. But for some odd reason I fell in love with these cute little characters, especially Cooro. There was a sad undertone throughout the series that kept me absorbed in the manga, and at the end I cried because it was just so melancholy and cute at the same time.

Strangely enough, it was also pretty realistic in terms of character interaction and their troubles. Loved it.

Fluffy With Dark Undertones

Loved reading this story. It has such creativity, cute characters who struggle to find their places in a world that is relatively harsh on these children, and beautiful artwork to boot! The story is wonderfully executed and sets up so nicely for a non-existent continuation that to this day I wish would be made!

This was one of the first series I bought and I'm so glad I was able to find all of the volumes. Such a heartwarming story that I can't praise enough.

Lighthearted and heavy at the same time. I really enjoyed the story and characters. I felt that the pacing matched the mood and style of the story. Will probably pick up to read again!

I read it on a whim and I ended up really liking the story. It was definitely very fresh and new, the concept of the story. I really loved the anima markings. Those were pretty darn sexy. I would mind having a tattoo with Senri's marking. In my opinion, I thought this was a pretty lighthearted read and very cute <3

However, I am extremely distraught over the ending of the story though. It sort of left in a cliffhanger like ending. That was the only reason why I gave this manga only four stars. I just wish the final chapters of the last volume would have elaborated more on Cooro's mental state when he on that funeral pyre, how is it that he managed to get his wings back, why did Fly lose the wings he took from Cooro, and why did Blanca just fade away like that?

It would also have been great to know if Blanca's existence had any relation with the animas, how she came to be if any, and Blanca's ties with Cooro.

Heartwarming adventures

This manga is about four kids with animal-like powers traveling from town to town experiencing life and the treatment of their kind. The ending is a bit rushed and confusing, leaving the reader puzzled on some issues. But they are not relevant to the overall story.

Note: Whitespades review is somewhat misleading, one would think this contains pedophilia, which it does not.

i had read it halfway before. i dropped it because im quite uncomfortable with certain subject such as slavery and pedophilia, but now i had went through hundreds of other manga and become quite jaded, i found that i can enjoy this. a nice, cute read where the harshest of conditions treated with a smile.

update:
at last i manage to finish this manga. what the...the ending with fly is unexpected and a bit creepy. i dont understand the last chapter much. however overall this manga is quite good. theres no grand plot or super villain, but their adventure is certainly cute and painful at the same time. really, for a manga populated with kids, somehow it come across as quietly mature.
