Description
From Shoujo Manga Maniac:
Chigusa Tsukikage holds the rights to the play "The Crimson Goddess," a lost masterpiece that many would love to see brought back to the stage.
Tsukikage, however, won't allow the cherished work to be diminished by an actress who isn't worthy of playing the title role. Fortunately, she has found two young actresses that just might be worthy: Maya Kitajima and Ayumi Himekawa. Though both actresses are exceptionally talented, only one can win the coveted role.

Engaging

This story is well developed. There are multiple arcs and it's engaging. This story really goes through multiple arcs. It doesn't skip on detail--this a strong point for this manga. I love the story, but we were all so close to finally wrapping the story or towards that direction at volume 49. It's unfortunate, that volume 50 won't be released. This story is a classic for the shoujo genre.

Will this ever be completed?

I’m waiting to see how the author wraps up this story before judging it on its entirety. She confirmed that she would complete this story 4 years ago and we’re all still waiting for the conclusion. I wonder if it will ever be completed =/

It's one of those manga in which you can see and feel the shortcomings but you love it anyway. The art style is old and far from being the greatest, the story is full of cliches, melodrama, and exaggeration, but you will love it anyway. I think because those shortcomings are executed in such a way that it's still appealing somehow.

And finally, what makes it distinguished compare to other manga is the way the author portray such an intense and pure rivalry between Maya and Ayumi. I've never witnessed such rivalry in other manga.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I really love Ayumi's character with all her struggle, superiority complex, and inferiority complex

"If you liked Act Age, I'd recommend Glass Mask. It's definitely a lot older, but it's very much so the spiritual predecessor."

If you are reading this review right now

If you are reading this review right now trying to convince yourself to read this manga, I should tell you that you must read this. Many had recommended this to me in the past and I've encountered it a lot of times but never did I try to read it. I gave it a try yesterday and now I finished all the current released 15 volumes.

review:
The story could really hook you. There are times when there are too much dialogue and I might sometimes find that annoying but it's still good. I've read other acting type of na has but this one left a deep impression to me. Mainly because of the main character. I like how she was obsessed with acting and it's as if acting is her oxygen. Though instead of obsession I would say it's more of a passion. The only thing I didn't like about her was her random indecisiveness but it didn't really affect his character that much.
Another interesting character is her sensei. I think theres another thing she should keep in check beside her physical health.

Anyways read this and you won't regret it. Btw, I don't like classic art too but trust me this is a gem

Charming

One of the best shojos out there, one of the reasons to appreciate old shojos.
Maya is a cry baby and useless, but is a passionate girl. I dont like the fact that theyre always telling her how useless she is: its so sad.
The rivarly between Maya and Ayumi is so good, with both of them respecting each other (similar to Ace o Narae, but Ayumi is nicer).
The art is old, but express well the fellings and the scene. I dont like the character design from the lasts volumes, but its so worth reading it.
Either way, theres no way to hate this manga. It makes you want to act like her or Watch plays.
As Im re-reading it, I see that is always the same: Maya trys to get the character, Masumi appears, she does the play and Masumi appears again. I have no problem with that, thought. MayaxMasumi is a great couple.

Its a lot like Swan or Ace no Narae: Girl has a special talent, someone discover that and she grows up. They're all really good but kind of repetitive when you have read plenty of those.

When I was a kid I didn't like the old-shoujo artstyle, that's why i never tried to read it. Even when the book was right in front of me. I'm glad i decided to read it decades later.
Not just because i'm more acceptable to many different drawing artstyle now, or that i have better understanding of how the story is, but also because this series is not even finished yet!
Glass Mask is very special. Eventhough some parts can be exaggerating, the story as a whole is very entertaining. What i like the most is the rivalry between maya and ayumi. Maya is the main character, but ayumi is a great character as well.

And when i tried it.... ah, this manga is so good.
XD
But Isn't maya an underage girl? and in this story kasumi who has big age gap loves her? oh my...
haha

Best Classic!

I got this manga from my mother. Yes, my mum, she read it in her teenage days.
I cant believe it still readable and maybe, maybe one of the best shoujo.
I was like 9 or 10 when i read it and I was so sad when I thought i wont be able to know the ending because it listed as uncomplete, and now how happy i am that the mangaka decide to continue it!
Sadly, i think it went downhill. I dont feel the great vibe from it anymore, the recent volumes just felt like so we can read the ending of this legendary shoujo classic.
Anyway, I recommend it for those who like shoujo manga, especially Skip Beat.

my first shoujo manga collection

My friend introduced GM to me when I was in second grade and I was in loved, so for birthday I asked for the series (it was being introduced in my country in 2003) and they could only buy 16 volumes since the rest werent out yet ( cam out every week). So every week I would visit a local bookstore n bought a new volume. It was my first shoujo manga and my first collection too. The art cracked me up since it was so melodramatic. And the love plot made me smiled (I remembered when the the main guy kiss maya for the first time I was like omg omg omg) this manga has such an influence over my life that I didnt even realized it (I felt in love with acting n join a local theater group a few years after I kind of forgot about this series). All said, this manga has flaw though.. like lots: cheesy, over the top emotion, kind of cheesy love triangle, her mom, etc. So if you cant stand old art with sparkly eyes that has thunder in the back ground or a really really melodrama, than this is definitely not for you (though read the middle part first if you are on the edge)..
