This is one of the best manga I have ever read. And I've read a lot.
It's wistful, but funny. Pretty crazy at times, but still laid back enough.
And, most importantly, it's about fairly normal people leading fairly normal lives. No super powers, nothing paranormal, no one being a huge musical prodigy even though they have a band and all.
It's just about people like the ones you know. Or, hell, people that could be you, for that matter. (Well, except for Taneda, for reasons that will become apparent once you actually read it...)

The main character's reflections are hit and miss in terms of being meaningful or not, as is the disjointed comedy later in the series. On the whole I couldn't connect with this as mch as I would need to to appreciate it. Definitely enjoyed What a Wonderful World much more.

One of the very, very few touching dramas out there. Realistic without indulging on cheap tragedy, yet funny at moments. Like life itself. Asano brings an outstading way to deal with the characters' insecurities, providing a believable mirror for its readers.

I have to say, Asano Inio is awesome (but then, you guys probably already know that). His works are best enjoyed with music, I think. For What A Wonderful World, it was Number Girl. And for Solanin, it's Spitz. Real tears were shed lol. ;__;
It was touching. Can't wait to finish this series.

Inio Asano is definitely one of the best seinen type manga authors out there. His writing and art style are very abstract yet 'real' in more ways than one.
Solanin, along with What a Wonderful World are some of his best works. I really wish a good publisher would put out some of his works.

Since nobody posted a synopsis yet, here's the simple idea:
Slice of life with a young couple, Inoue Meiko and Taneda Shigeo, and how everyday occurrences affect their lives. Meiko begins contemplating whether freedom without purpose is really the same thing as boredom. This is a retelling of a very common real life situation, perhaps enjoyable enough for an older fanbase.
Art is different, there are no anime-esque deformations here.
