When Soah's impoverished, desperate village decides to sacrifice her to the Water God Habaek to end a long drought, they believe that drowning one beautiful girl will save their entire community and bring much-needed rain. Not only is Soah surprised to be rescued by the Water God-instead of killed-she never imagined she'd be a welcomed guest in Habaek's magical kingdom, where an exciting new life awaits her! Most surprising, however, is the Water God himself... and how very different he is from the monster Soah imagined.

Dont understand the high ratings. Im pushing myself to read another page and im still like wtf is going on... ? I decided to drop this because i just hate hate hate this manhwa. I cant explain it well but i feel like soah and mui have no personality at all, and they dont have fun together, kinda like they just randomly fell into dramatic love that doesnt make sense... I dont like the art very much, the characters look awkward sometimes and their body is waaay out of proportion, the faces are kinda ugly, especially the huge noses. But i have to say, the art other than the characters is really well done so i had to give this a 4. :L

beatiful art. however im not a big fan of manwha since i have a feeling it is not close to japanese manga. The drawing is really a work of art. Story is way to long before you actually get a point of the situation. But i kinda like it.

One of the best I've ever read. The artwork is amazing. And the angst's just right. This reminds me so much of 100% perfect girl. The plot development may get slow at times, but the subtlety of the story is what that made it somewhat different for me from other stories I read. Very beautiful and elegant characters, and Soah is a head turner. Definitely worth one time read.

God abuse her power for his sake of human women bride - kyaaaa.. sound melankolis ins't it?. the plot is to lame. the char drawing look alike, the diffren just tatto in head, in ayes, scraft, etc. I stop reading at vol 8, cuz its juz like drama, telenovela - thats why i think this manwha suit for women. cuz there is no fighting scene in here

As everyone has mentioned this is a beautiful series - the artwork is amazing. I agree that it started off strong, maybe a times a tad slow, but, minus the sometimes confusing plot, I am growing a little tired of the plots to separate Mui and Soah, and Soah's indecisiveness. She's willing to let Mui give everything up for her, but she's not willing to do the same for him. As much as I love the series (or maybe because I love it), I think it's time for it to finish - let it finish strong instead of slowly dying.

In the end, I'll keep reading it and hoping Mui and Soah can live happily ever after. =)

I loved the first volumes, the art, the costumes, the scenery, everything was so original! I didn't even mind the confusing aspects because it hinted at hidden depths and I loved the plotting going on in the background, how every single character was following their own agenda, to which, as the reader, you're not privy to, only making things more interesting. And that was what made the charm of this manhwa, because the overall romance plot is pretty cliché.

But when coming back to it after a while, I realise that what held me fascinated in the first 10 volumes or so doesn't work anymore. As reviewers have already pointed out, Soah is pretty tasteless and bland and she didn't grow at all throughout the series, her sole defining attribute is that she's a pretty girl in love, but as this is a romance shoujo that's not saying much. The problem is that Mui suffers from more or less the same problem, he's a dark, tall and handsome figure all right, but 10 volumes in the characterization is a little thin!

What's more is that the evolution of the romance is not romantic or memorable, I've reached the wedding night and it pulled me straight out of my read, you've got every single sexist cliché about the blushing bride (and the reminiscence of Soah's hardheadedness in the first chapters is only worse now that she's come to this!) who's at the disposal of the husband and has to wait for him to come and 'claim his prize'. Then comes the 'I pin your wrists to the bed and loom over you because that's hot' and no preliminaries whatsoever for this virgin before he attempts to penetrate her either. Surely the strength of her love is supposed to make up for the pain and the fact that her pleasure, and her playing an active part in the obtaining of that pleasure, are apparently an impossibility.

I'm well aware that this is a common depiction of sex, where it's all about the male being a male, (and the woman being a simple recipient) and that it even plays in the common feminine fantasies about sex (in this patriarchal culture we globally live in where a woman who likes sex is a wh*re (but a guy's just a guy!) it takes away the feelings of guilt (wrongly!) attached to have the man take 'control', if he's in charge then you're not responsible, you did not actively seek pleasure so it's not your fault you're engaging in such shameful behaviour etc...) but it doesn't make it any less misogynistic, healthy or OK.

So yeah, as much as I loved it in the beginning, I'm really not sure I'll ever finish it.

Let me say that I'm a big fan of dark, dramatic shoujo, especially when it involves a relationship between a human and another entity.

Bride of the Water God is one of the manhwa that you will either love or hate. It's not for everyone. It starts very slowly and the author dedicate a lot of time in the relationship of the two protagonists. She spends like 7 volumes if I remember correctly for
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Soah to realize that Mui is Habaek.

Somewhat later, the author is focusing more on the other gods and the hostilities between them. We get to see that it's not only about the romance between the 2 main characters but there is more. Pretty much a war.
However, I agree with some people that it is confusing at some parts; That because the story-telling ain't the best and it can confuse you easily if you won't pay much of attention. Many times the story-telling is not linear and it jumps to other scenes where you might have no idea what is going-on. Or many times, the author is not mentioning the names of the characters who talk and you have to memorize their appearance to remember who they are. But yes, the story is quite original.

Now, some of the characters are a problem. Mainly Soah. I don't hate Soah but the author hasn't given her any personality at all. She just stands there saying that she loves Habaek, etc. For example,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
She was easily used as a pawn by the Emperor, yet she did nothing. Later again, she is tricked so easily. I haven't seen her having any resistance against the enemies at all.

And Habaek. Habaek is a god but many times he is acting like an emo boy. Like at first,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
He is so buried in the past with Nakbin and even if he meets Soah to make a new start, he is obsessed with Nakbin again. Or very later when he gives up his powers to become a human and live with Soah; How stupid can that be? Habaek is a key figure in this war between gods, yet he give up the only protection he can offer to Soah. Even if he is a god, his decisions are not wise.

The artwork is amazing, however I prefer the sceneries she draws. They are simple stunning and they give you an air of traditional asian atmosphere.

Yes, this manhwa does has flaws but if you do not mind them, it is a great read. But only for the patient ones.

This story is so confusing! It's kind of a dark tale and there aren't many happy cutesy moments that don't follow up with angst. The story is really hard to keep up with, especially if you stop reading the story for a while - it's difficult to remember all the character names and their flashbacks (ie. importance in the plot). I forgot that there was any plot going on at some the story seemed to make little progress after chapter 50 or so..

The art is really nice and detailed, although I'm not that impressed by the super pointy anatomy of the illustration, and the weird proportions. A lot of the positions (most notably the feet) are really awkward looking. I do LOVE the costumes and settings though, it's just that the characters don't really feel any more special to me than most mangas, if not less than average. Because of the similar facial features, I mix up a LOT of characters (including dudes and girls!), they are all tall and beautiful..but they almost all have similar expressions (ie. emotionless..sometimes they look like they are on cloud 9 too), if it weren't for the distinct costumes and sometimes hair, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference even if dialogue/monologue were there (indication of weak character impression upon the reader..). If I had to sit down and describe all the characters, I'd probably sit for an hour and only come up with something like "she's nice. He's mean." ..there's just too much put into the confusing story that we can't even see what kind of characters we are dealing with!!

It didn't leave an impression on me..

Well,I have to say I don't usually read Manhwa ^^" I started this cause I liked the pictures I found on the internet. The art is beautiful, indeed. But the plot?!? The start is quite good but then I think it gets a bit too confusing. Anyway I think I'm going to finish reading it smile

Bride of the Water God.... I don't even know what to think of this series. Personally, I never liked it. I don't even find the art that amazing, the only thing I can find myself to be impressed with is the fine details. Other then that I feel like the people were drawn really... not well. Sometimes the characters hairs look like wigs, their bodies can at times also look very stiff and awkward; I could go on but that's enough examples. If anyone is going to tell me that is her 'style' then I must say I am not very impressed by it. The story was interesting at first then it just turned to angst.. angst... and more angst. This series should have ended a looong time ago.
