However, she must hide that she is female, and pose as a man. And so, for eight years, she grows up as a cold, male, bodyguard. It looks like she'll be this way forever--until a fateful encounter with Lee Yun-ha shakes her very foundations, and leaves her conflicting with herself, as her feelings of love clash against her feelings of duty.

Good story, but flawed

I'll start off by saying when I first read this manhwa (about 7 years ago now, dang), I really enjoyed it. Even then I realized how cheesy it was, but there is a special place in m heart for Love in the Mask.

The plot is by far this manhwa's best feature. I'm always down for a story about a little girl who has to hide her gender and be rough and tough to survive. Hyun-Bin was a great protagonist in that way. However, as the story progressed, she got less tough and had to be rescued more and more often. The other major flaw in her character building was that her mental strength diminished as well. Now I could understand if she developed a mental disorder like PTSD (that girl went through a LOT), but that's not how it seemed to me. Feel free to disagree.

By and large though, I did like the characters even if the were unrealistic at times.

Biggest flaw of this comic I think is the length. There were several arcs that did not even need to be there, that could be completely cut with no effect on the story

Looking at you Mr Kang whatever your name is, crazy haired half American gangster guy

Fight scenes are also a little on the ludicrous side.

And the ending... a bit far fetched.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Really jumped the shark there with the hypnotism
BUT I did like seeing where everyone ended up. I wish it weren't so rushed. given how drawn out the rest of the series was, I wish the ending were handled better.

All in all, if you like romance that isn't always sparkly and full of flowers, this is a worthwhile read. None of the characters are unscathed by the end, and the author doesn't pull any punches. I love that kind of grit in a story. If you do too, enjoy smile

I enjoyed the story idea. I mean, who doesn't like a manwha thats about a strong girl fighting for her place in the world. (and can kick some serious trash) But it took forever for anything to happen. There weren't any huge surprises and it seemed that when

people found out when she was a girl... there weren't any consequences for it.
The progress of the story as a whole was lacking. And the characters that ended up being my favorite and I enjoyed their progression

end up dying.
So at the end the
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
undeveloped main characters rush-ended romance kills the feels that might have otherwise lived.

Overall I feel frustrated that the characters and plot were not brought to their full potential, and ended so haphazardly. But I would recommend this as a good read to those who like drawn out plot lines and kinda sappy love stories.

It's not perfect, but I love it anyways

First off, if you can't get past cliches, scary artwork, bad scanlations, and a ridiculous amount of drama and angst, you'll probably find this very lacking.

However, for those who have been looking for a great read and are willing to try and look past these issues and enjoy the amazing plot, read this manhwa. It's not perfect; you'll find yourself hating characters, hating decisions and wishing things could be different, but hey, that's life. Nothing goes according to plan and these characters don't find their endings without a ton of hard work and wrong turns.

It's seriously flawed in some aspects and it can be crazy dramatic, but somehow I keep finding my way back to this. I love this manhwa so much, it's definitely one of my favorite romance manga/ect. despite it all, and you'll have to trust me when I say I've read way too many to be healthy. To me, it's one of those rare gems where the character's emotions are so raw and empathetic. I have read this five times (and after writing this I feel like I should make it six edit: I did just that...) and I still cry.

Read it. If you don't like it after 10 chapters, then you probably should use your time elsewhere. Just give it a chance, I doubt you'll be disappointed if this is your kind of thing.

Update: I'm reading this for the seventh time just for fun and I can't stop laughing, these characters are so serious and stupid sometimes! Hahaha. Still love it, but I guess once I've gotten to the point where I even have some lines memorized, it's lost some of its emotional bite.

The manga was boring. The author could have cpnc
Used it much faster and with less drama to make it a better story. There were too many unnecessary characters who came in for no obvious purpose other than increasing chapter count. A very disappointing outcome.

Reading this is a waste of time. Not recommended at all.

My fave yet its lacking

Like the title subject says, this is my favourite series. This is also the first long series that I finished. The plotline and characters are good (I only like them because of their backstory and are pretty), although there are some characters I find annoying...
The downside of this manhwa is that all the characters seem to have the same personality (mannerisms). What also makes this manhwa lacking is when reading it, there is no atmosphere throughout the whole story, this is mostly due to the character's lack of individuality. Finally, the character's expressions are very bland. .
In conclusion, the only thing that will drive you to read this is the plotline and if you are a sucker to pretty characters.
Edit: I realised, although this is my favourite series, i have only mostly talked bad about this manhwa

God I swear this author ALWAYS screws up her endings--she completely ruins her own works by doing this every single time!!!! (read her other works and endings were similarly rushed)

Plus, the unnecessary melodrama had me rage-quitting several times. It took a lot of effort to actually finish reading this. These stories are supposedly to be entertaining, but this one was a pain in the butt to get through.

Slow, Repetitive Buildup and Rushed Ending
by bueyboo

My title basically sums it up. I will divide the plot into three parts: Act I, the Gang Life, and the End.

Act I, while only having a few cringe-worthy parts, was mostly enjoyable except that some parts were dragged out and the angst was repeated. It honestly seemed a little forced how Hyun-Bin is initially attracted to Yun-Ha but the develop of their relationship was decent after this. Soon, however, we see the main couple go through the same trials repeatedly for a while before real changes occur. I understand this was done to show how strong Hyun-Bin's love for Yun-Ha was but it became less enjoyable when I felt the author was beating me over the head with it.

Also, the gang system seemed a little convoluted and disappeared when no longer needed to move along the plot. I'm not trying to spoil it so basically, once this one key event occurs, it just seems that the intense threats and darkness from this part disappears. This occurs like twice in the buildup and then again in the Gang Life part. For example, these kids did some crazy things and then somehow, they'd revert back to fist fights; their threat level plummeted and I couldn't take it seriously when the main characters either won them over with their great personality or could just beat an entire group singlehandedly.

The Gang Life arch I actually enjoyed a lot because that was when it focused more on the development of Bi-Rak. This guy was my favorite character and the author actually did a really good job portraying his sense of longing and dedication. The plans of the gang boss confused me as I honestly had no idea what he was trying to accomplish but these were small details since the main point was to develop the relationship between characters. Anyway, this part managed to touch me and is what I think brought the quality of this manwha up.

Next, the End arch was just so rushed. I could not come up with a more relevant name because it seriously just ended after the Gang Life arch. The lengths Hyun-Bin went through to
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
hide her identity
went up in smoke rather quickly. Also, it never allowed us to see how
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Hyun-Bin and Yun-Ha reconciled
. They just did. It never seemed like Hyun-Bin
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
really got over her trauma
. She just did. It would've been nice to see more development in our main couple because the end felt like they were together just for the sake of it.

Last point, I'll go over characterization. Hyun-Bin's character was really interesting in the beginning; you really cheered her on. However, her inability to hide her feelings of love was just so overdone. It was done better in the Gang Life arch; a new conflict appears and I liked how she realized it and came to terms with it more quickly than in Act I. For Yun-Ha, he was a more dynamic character in Act I, but in the Gang Life and The End, he's seemed to finish developing and remained stagnant for the rest of the story. I wish the author focused on him and his anguish a little more; I mean, come on, this guy has been
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
waiting for years on end. You could've made him break down in tears because of the intense longing or something so we could have something to relate to. We seem him cry for like one or two pages but let us see the agonizing, long years that pass as he waits; waiting drains you and he never wavered but in an unrealistic, reader-will-totally-pass-it-over kind of way. It seemed like he was stuck on a one-track mind and that's ALL he is.
Yun-Ha starts to pale in comparison when Bi-Rak becomes more developed and we get to experience Bi-Rak's pain and longing with him. I will say Bi-Rak was my favorite character; he might've been too good than humanly possible but still a likeable person to read.

While it wasn't as generic as some of her other stories, I still found the plot to be predictable. I'm actually surprised, but overall, this wasn't a bad read (then again, I started reading this work with REALLY low standards). Although the ending was a little stupid, it's not completely unsatisfying. It was through sheer will-power that I was able to endure looking at the art for so many chapters. I've given up on her style ever improving =_=

poor art, badly written. the initial plot had merit but its all downhill after that. the author feels the need to explain every little thing. its frustrating. give some credit to our intelligence.
the characters have these annoying sparkly eyes. the art is jerky and there is no flow.
this said after reading four volumes i decided to give up. the ending may be good(in accordance to the other reviews) but 32 volumes of the above said torture doesnt seem worth it to me.

...It doesn't leave you with a satisfied feeling.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The last chapters are just horrible.

I have to admit I'm not the biggest fan of endings where more hearts are broken than fulfilled(even if it is more realistic). However, that's just my personal taste.

The real problem is how everything is rushed. After all this setup of 32 Volumes there is just one chapter to turn the tables. The heroine wasn't even the one to turn the tables. She got injured and it somehow just happened. The revelation of her gender was also just accepted. Even the moment her feelings changed from "I can't be with you" to "I will anyways" wasn't that big of a deal after she made a fuss about is and was literally mos of the manga cold towards her love. Finally, the epilog was a joke of 4 pages.
