First thing that came to my mind months ago when reading this title was that it has the same name as the famous 1970's rock band. I then took one look at the cover art and dismissed this as a story that was obviously full of sex and had bad art to boot. Recently though, when I decided to pick this up and read it out of pure boredom, boy, was I pleasantly suprised to find out that I was so wrong about this!
Firstly, this manga is so much fun! Simply put, in the universe that Kotobuki Tarako created, almost anything is possible. For instance, rather than humans being the decendents of apes, they are decended from animals and therefore have the soul of one. It is even possible for same-sex couples to marry and even to have a baby if they choose!
As bizare as this sounds in a manga, it really works in so many ways. When I started this I thought it would be pure comedy or even a parody of other yaoi manga, but it's not like that at all. Sex Pistols has both funny moments and even sad ones which are touching. The plot mainly revolves a few select couples, but it drifts into other stories revolving around other couples as well. They are all interconnected in some way, which is good in many ways, although I often get confused trying to figure out who is related to who. For that matter, I got a headspin trying to figure out who was the parent of who!
As for the art, it takes a while to get used to, but does eventually grow on you. Also, If you can keep an open mind, it's actually a very enjoyable read. The premise of this story may sound strange - even the title emphasizes this weirdness (which by the way, is totally misleading, as there is very little sex) - but it's actually very good and has a lot going for it despite first appearances. Definately worth a read if you are looking for something different from the usual yaoi!
