I remember watching the premiere of episode one on Cartoon Network. Mt friends read Naruto and liked t, but it never appealed to me. THEN, I saw the episode and loved it! Naruto was energetic and unruly. I couldn't wait for more. I loved watching it and even dragged my dad and stepdad into it! I love the diverse characters and finding out their pasts, watching them grow up was great, but after a while I lost interest. I am starting Shipudden now though. I was obsessed and lost interest. But that doesn't mean I don't still love it!It inspired me and makes me believe, in what, I don't know. Just don't avoid it because of its popularity. You'll miss out!

Reviewing Naruto is very hard, the reason: Something that's this popular is bound to have a lot of "Detractor's" or "Hater's" if you prefer. I'll say that when I first saw Naruto, was on Cartoon Network. It was very funny, and very good, i kept watching it, and until i got tired of waiting for new episodes every week, i watched all of the episodes online. Almost losing interest in the Fillers. But Soon found out it was average... Until... (Note: This is an unbiased review on a person that thought Naruto was nothing special.)

When i got around to reading the Manga, my perspective Changed. The anime that looked friendly and slowed down, was in the manga more intense. Naruto gets a bad rap for it's popularity, but it's very decent, and i'll tell you why.

Naruto goes from a story of a boy trying to find acceptance of the people that once called him a monster, to prove that he can be a person that people could depend and admire. Although it quickly turned into, A boy finding comfort in friends starts to feel better, and his bitter friend in his loneliness succumbs to darkness.
And eventually it escalates to boy turned man, looking for his friend turned enemy in a world where bitter men lead tragic lives, and revenge and hatred rains down and seeps through like radiation on their lives.

Naruto's characters are large and diverse. Sakura a strong willed girl. Hinata a nervous girl in love with naruto. Shikamaru a genius slacker. allot of good characters, and as the series goes on, you see growth, not only in the character models, but in their attitudes aswell, Shikamaru is a great example, Slacker becomes engrossed in a world where not all of his friends going into the same cave come out with him. That Cave is an obstacle, and Not everyone will leave Alive.

But what really shines is that Kishimoto Masashi has one really great talent, that talent has kept me reading every chapter each week. His talent is, he keeps each new chapter interesting. I just can't wait for the next one to come out, example: today i read 469, it was great!! A little action, with some emotional moments.

Not only that, but he made the Characters very poignant, like you really care about them. And the lore (History) in the world of Naruto is great too. The ninja world is a interesting one at that. Between the Kakashi story, and the Jiraya Story, they give a sense of emotion, like they failed their friends and apprentices, whether it's Kakashi's lost partners and pupil's disappearance, or Jiraya's pupil's coming to bad end, and never being able to truly be with the one he wants.

These story's are some of the reasons why this series shines gold in my eyes. It went from a kids manga, to one where a man wouldn't feel ashamed experiencing.
It teaches valuable lessons, that pain can be healed by the bond of a friend. And the main Character Naruto, who at first I didn't like, became my favorite Character because of his Determination, his Attitude and his Heart. He goes out of his way to protect his Ninja Way. His help toward Sakura and his friends have made him an adult character with a cool demeaner.

And lastly, Naruto's final journey doesn't end with Sasuke but begins with him, where he might lead a world where people will stop the wheel of Hatred and finally bring about a true peace.
Again this manga is a hoot, OVERATED My @$$, This unbelievably lives up to it's popularity, I would give this a higher score, but it's only limited to this number so i'll give it a
10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't underestimate it cause it's popular, it's very entertaining.

art: at vol 20-something it gets better, and then it went down again (and uglier than the beginning) lol - so i have to say, 3/10 for the art overall

story: The more it complicated the situation, the more stupid this manga has become. All the "we will definitely get Sasuke back the way he was like before the curse" just get more tired and boring and dull and stupid and blah blah, so 2/10 for the story since it kept me entertaining for about 10 first volumes (~1/5 of the story lol)

Overall: Please, save your time by reading something else and wait for naruto to finish and then re-read. You might find it more interesting than now.

and lol @ the comment of virusbluemage about Naruto is better than One Piece. There's just in no way that Naruto can even come near one piece. OP is very solid and the storyline is always cleared and focused, even arts are more detailed than Naruto. But i won't go further on comparing.
And yes, i totally agree with La Plume 🙂 there're brilliant shounen mangas that no matter how old you are, you'll keep finding it interesting and will re-read it hundreds of times (HnG is my fav btw). And Naruto definitely not one of them 🙂

I understand how people bash Naruto for the terrible artwork. However, I feel that it is just personal taste. The fact that Naruto is considered one of the best manga leads to high expectations. These high expectations cannot be fufilled. After all, this manga is a bit better than average. It's not spectactular people. Personally, I think everyone should try the first few volumes. After all, of you consider yourself to be someone who has read a lot of manga yet have not even TOUCHED Naruto, you fail as someone who have read manga. No. You fail as an otaku. And you know what? I give this series an 8 for the hard work and effort the mangaka is putting into the manga. I think the mangaka draws quite well so I don't even know why people are stating that Naruto looks like a kid doodled on a piece of paper. The lines are solid, you can clearly distinct who is female or male, and the over the YEARS of drawing naruto, he looks the same. (before the whole 3 year journey with his coach of course)

Overall the series is average. One gets bored with Naruto fighting skills. He basically HAS none. The minor characters are quite alluring. I wish there would be more of Kakashi, Gaara, Shikamaru, Sasuke, etc...

I give Naruto a 10 because it has stayed really, really good for a very long time now. How many other mangas are still entertaining you after 400 episodes? (Not Bleach, that's for sure.)

Lots of new mangas start out strong. You have fun exploring the new world the artist created; you get tantalizing hints about deeper conspiracies and hidden pasts of the different characters; maybe an unexpected plot twist throws you for a loop. In the end, though, I usually wind up disappointed. Once the first set of ideas have been used up, all of the sudden I'm being introduced to a whole new set of generic villains, being asked to care about the backstories of a batch of replacement sidekicks, or watching the same old conflict from volume one drag on and on because the writer doesn't know what to do once it's resolved.

With Naruto, it never feels like Kishimoto is dragging things out just to collect another paycheck. He's never out of ideas. New characters always feel like they have roots in the world of the story and believable connections to what came before. Naruto develops, but he stays the same person at heart. Because I have confidence in the storyteller's talent, I can suspend my disbelief and really get into the story.

(I also think that Kishimoto would kill off any and all of his favorite characters if that's what the story demands. Compare that to Bleach, where the good guys never die and always get healed completely. When the characters are supposed to be in "danger", how am I supposed to care? I know they'll be fine.)

Yeah, you can argue that other manga have more "depth," but great storytelling is a talent that's handed out to very few people in a generation. Today, we read Dumas and Dickens: the 19th century's great storytellers, not its great philosopher-authors. In another hundred years, people will probably be reading Steven King and J.K. Rowling, not David Foster Wallace.

Naruto is great storytelling. That's a good thing!

What to complain 'bout such a wonderful manga like this?
Best best shounen ever read. Hope that Naruto will soon surpass Dragon ball to become the bestselling manga of all the time XD

Btw, happy birthday to beloved Naruto-kun. I'm desperately waiting 4 your battle 😀

definitely a SHOUNEN manga

I did not look for depth and diversity and all that mature, serious stuff as Naruto IS A SHOUNEN manga (meaning it is intended for young boys and teens). Yes, shounen are formulaic, cycling and simple because it is intended to be so. Young boys can not understand it if it weren't so.

The start was ok, the Chuunin exam got me hooked up, the Sasuke retrieval arc would have been boring if not for the other interesting characters being given exposure time (e.g. Shikamaru and Gaara), the drawing got worse in some parts so I gave up, especially when there wasn't much action going on. Shippuden got me hooked up again because of the Akatsuki. The Hidan and Kakuzu attack was interesting. The formation of Sasuke`s team was boring...,

On the whole I can say it is an outstanding and popular manga not because it is really a great piece of work (actually the artwork s*cks big time) but because it can entertain me (yeah, at some times)...

I agree that the first part of Naruto (before timeskip) is somewhat better than the second part (in the west: Shippuden), maybe because almost everything is already introduced in the first part and just a few new things are introduced in the second part of the manga.

There are some twist that I do not like in the Shippuden part like: an important villain, e.g. Orochimaru died too easily, unbalanced fighting skill of some characters in the manga, Naruto still being incompetent after the timeskip (nothing learned from Jiraiya), Naruto just improves his ninja techniques AFTER the timeskip, what's the point of a time skip? - Although other ninja's do have improved, e.g. Sakura (superior healing techniques/skills and Super Strength, just like Tsunade; and Sasuke ( He is now stronger than Orochimaru and may be even stronger than Itachi - time will tell). Another things I don't like is that other Tail Beasts and its container, jinchūriki, (except the Nine Tails - Naruto and Shukaku - Gaara) are playing a very small roll in the manga; they do have a name, but do not have real personality; also they are so easily defeated by the Akatsuki. They should give the other Tailed beasts and its "container" (jinchūriki) a bigger rol in the manga. What I like in Naruto Shippuden are some of the new ninpo/ninja techiques introduced in the manga (mainly those from the Akatsuki members) and the mysterious leader of the Akatsuki. Those ninja techniques are still very top notch and looks very cool! The new Sasuke also looks much more cooler than Naruto who is still very immature at times. Then Sakura, I like how she develops in the manga and she's now not the helpless one anymore.

Despite the minor flaws the Naruto (Shippuden) manga is still a very enjoyable manga to read, since the Mangaka knows how to add interesting and exciting stuff in the story, especially in the newest chapters of Naruto Shippuden.

imangine a really long-drawn-out battle,
at the end of which after calling forth even greater attacks than enemy's last's and so on ...
the "evil" side seems to be killed, but the truth is that they have escaped
by a cheap ninja move/magic (unlike their great techniques, they used seconds ago).

the bottom line:
enemies defeated: ZERO
goals accomplished: ZERO
useless info/ chit-chat: PLENTY
usefull info, things, weapons etc.: ZERO

time spent - nothing (usefull) gained
this is how I feel about 2nd half of it, but i have still have some hope left...

this great piece of manga... goes way back, but i have a feeling it's going to end soon... im guessing that this may be one of the last arcs. in my opinion, Naruto has been very enjoyable throughout, from beginning to the current.
