Description

Sakurakouji Sakura is a girl who appears modest and graceful but in reality is skilled in martial arts. After witnessing a boy burning people with his blue flame, she is startled to see that the same boy is a transfer student, Oogami Rei. Oogami is a Code Breaker, one who "does not exist". He is a seemingly cold-blooded killer who follows the principle of "an eye for an eye", to "use evil against evil". Convinced that killing is not right, Sakurakouji sets out to stop him and penetrate his icy heart.

Its so stupid its cringe-worthy. It starts off with 2 characters that are somewhat interesting. A tough butt-kicking martial arts high school girl, and a boy who's stone cold killer. The girl quickly transforms into the comic relief. Really, the author shouldn't have bothered to give her martial arts skills then, its kinda wasted.

So, is it comedy or is it drama? Well, it could loosely be seen as a spoof on other heavy angst ridden super serious manga. Except, the main character is so serious and goes about killing people in such a horrible fashion that its hard to see it as parody. So that makes it a drama with slapstick thrown in. This could be ok, except as other reviewers have pointed out its kinda thrown in sometimes at odd points which doesn't work. Another way to look at it is if this was supposed to be black humor/black comedy, but then it fails there because its not really in line with slapstick. Its like the drama and humor cancel each other out.

The girl also seems to quickly become habituated to the violence and murder going on around her. She doesn't seem to be that horrified after a bit. So what is a smart, strong talented girl supposed to do with a killer on the loose? Mind you this is a killer (in a very serious scene) that attempted to kill her and threatened to kill innocent bystanders, her family and friends. Why, she starts to dispense hugs of course. The power of the hug is not to be underestimated (sarcasm intended). So she evolves from somewhat tough, to comedy relief damsel in distress, to vaguely annoying.

But wait there's more. Aside from the sometimes dumb dialogue there's plenty of contrived scenes. I wont bother with spoilers, its just enough to say that they often give our anti-hero an excuse or justification to kill someone. It wouldn't be so bad except its not subtle, nor is it surprising, its instead clumsy and ham-fisted.

One last thing. Some reviewers have said to give it to chapter 30 and another one said wait till chapter 55 then it gets really interesting. I have not read all the way up to that. You know why? If you have to wait that long for the manga to start getting good, then its a fail. Why waste your time reading 30-50 chapters, instead read something better.

This series does not deserve a 10.

it started out fine, it would have been a great story if it just followed the moral dilemma of Ogami and his relationship with sakura ... but it has just gotten so ridiculous and clishe. After the later chapters it just kind of gives off a "really?" fealing. some of the chapters are pretty funny though.

It was okay when I was reading it out of boredom and i got quite interested in it, but it need to be read in chunks not by release I found. And I find the characters really annoying so I think I might actually drop it.

I think this is a really good manga. I don't get some of the bad reviews. Sakura...I love and hate her. But I think I love her more. She is annoying but there is a reason for it. Most characters like her they have no reason to act as annoying as they act. To me the most annoying person is Ogami. He tends to tick me off sometimes but thats what I like about this. I think every1 should keep reading instead of stopping at the beginning because it gets better.

As some of the reviewers here, I dropped Code Breaker because I got bored before it reached chapter 20. I got disappoint since I'm such a huge fan of SDK. However, ever since it got licensed in my country, I wonder about the progress. Then, I read some reviews saying that it got interesting in later chapter, so I downloaded it again. And boy, am I so glad I did that. It is true. In later chapters, the story does get more and more interesting and exciting. And lots of mysteries which are yet to be revealed.

After I think about it, the reason this manga seems boring in the beginning is probably, unlike Samurai Deeper Kyo, it started slow. In SDK, we instantly introduce with an interesting aspect, that is Kyoshiro and Kyo in one body. Moreover, the interesting side characters such as Yukimura already appear in the early chapters. One has to be patient to read Code Breaker.

Yes, the story is not that original. But it has the unique sense of Akimijyo-sensei which I really fond of. And, of course, the characters. Akimijyo-sensei is one of the mangaka who could create lots characters in one manga but manage to present each of them as one specific memorable individual. It is easy for me to distinguish one character to the other. Not just through their physical appearance, but also their nature. Furthermore, eventhough you could feel the presence of some SDK characters, none of them are really similar to the characters of SDK. Sakura has a little bit of Yuuya, but she is not Yuuya. Ogami has a little bit of Kyo, but he is not Kyo. Sakura may seems annoying. However, it is revealed later that her nagging and clinging to Ogami has a reason. So far, my favorite character is Shibuya.

I also want to comment about the balance of comedy and seriousness. I actually like that he put comedy in the middle of seriousness. I mean, it is not that full of angst or emo story. And, for me, the comedy does not ruin the flow of the story at all.

Code Breaker is not a super extraordinary manga. But it is good. It is one of good manga out of tons of manga I have ever read. And it is certainly worth my time.

For you new readers who wonder whether Code Breaker worth your time or not, read until at least 30 chapters, then decide. For old readers who dropped this, you might want to pick it up again. I did, and I don't regret it.

...to repetitive and predictable

If you are a fan of good stories, battles, character development, decent comedy, and good art work, then you can fine this manga anywhere. Its a decent manga, but its like the story with different characters and plot. I mean, cliché after cliché. After you've read as much manga as me and read alot of great and horrible stories, you get bored quick when you read an average(similar) story for too many times. Some you can keep going on reading for a while, even finish the story, but then there are manga like this that you just get tired and bored of and lose interest. Its been awhile since i last read a Code: Breaker chapter though, so maybe the story picked up a bit and got more interesting. But everything from the story to the characters to the artwork[although better then most] was average to the point as knowing the sky is blue and grass is green. 4/10 might be a bit low since its a good read if you havent read much manga but this is my rating

I really need to write this, for those who think that code breaker is bad and whatever. Hmm... I think you forgot that the author is the same with SDK author, and i see Sakurakouji is a heaven send compare to Yuya, she can fight(its true but compare to other power user of course her is nothing) and has ability where by Yuya only can screams Kyo here Kyo there... that is enough to drive you to the wall. There are a lot of similarity in his story telling SDK and CB, i am not blaming him, i like SDK with all it lacks and i like Code Breaker the same. Give it times guys, at least the story now is going somewhere...

Code Breaker isn't that bad i like it but not really crazy about it :T after chapter 55 or so thats when things get more interesting.I find that Sakura can be annoying at sometimes,thats my only complain though!

Don't Waste Time; Don't Read it.

If you've read the opinion, you can understand that the majority are against it, giving low rating. If this doesn't convince you, then read a few volumes and find out for yourself that you've wasted valuable time. I didn't believe it and started trying to force myself to go over several volume just to make sure it was well worth it but in the end, I let myself down. I should have listened to the users gripe for once--oh, how I regret it.

I had a friend who's a huge comic fan and I introduced him to manga with this manga, and he responded positively. Then he went on to read other manga and came back to me this time, but with a negative review. He trashed this manga like a fucking fruitcake. He said that while reading another manga, it finally hit him and was also shocking that he didn't realize sooner... that this manga was junk. What I drew from this was a person not much exposed to manga ranging from shounen, seinen, to adult would find this fun and enjoyable while others who have had a fair amount of time with manga will instantly find that this is pretty much crap. But there are some who just can't discern form what is good or bad, and others given their personal preference still can't tell the difference.

Here's a compilation of most of the comments I've quoted below. I quote below the important part in the user's comment so you don't have to drag yourself over 10+ pages of opinions.

There needs to be a balance between comedy and seriousness

The series started off strong. The main female character is bearable. The art is good and the fight scenes are pretty awesome. However the problem is that the author isn't able to balance humor and seriousness. Moments which are supposed to be serious and intrigue the reader are made light of by the inclusion of humorous jokes by the characters. Ogami who started off all serious and totally violent started making jokes which could be seen as good character development but for me it seemed out of place. There is sometimes a bit too much comedy and it sometimes ruins some of the revelations and good plot twists that comes along. The tension, that feeling is just not there. The author seriously needs to understand when jokes are to be made and when they are not. If he can improve this, this manga definetly has potential. There needs to be a good balance between comedy and seriousness.
