Mizutani is a self-absorbed overachiever, concerned only with maintaining the highest grades in school. Haru is an impulsive short tempered brute, who scares everyone with his explosive bursts of violence. Haru gets suspended on the first day of school when he encounters some bullies harassing a student and dispatches the bullies with great bloody violence. Mizutani is tasked with delivering school materials to Haru who interprets this as an act of friendship and latches on to Mizutani, much to her dismay. And so begins a strange and potentially combustible relationship.

I dont know. I like the start. And the romantic parts between the two leeds... but at the same time i feel it drags out to mutch. Afther some chapters i just started jumping parts, becouse realy the side stories are realy boring. I like the characters. This manga could have focues more on the psykological part realy. The start lade out good room for that... I also think the characters and the plot is to little consistenst with one an other. They act in a compromising way, and then suddently next chapter they dont. So yeahhh the story just goes on and on, and when you think they finaly solved their feelings, next chapter its like they havent.

The story is enjoyable as soon as you start picking up on the pace. The beginning chapters may appear a bit useless in terms of plot development, but in the end they really are essential to the story. People who drop this manga because it's "boring" haven't reached the point where exciting events are brought upon our main couple by the side characters yet. To be honest, I was about to drop this at around 10 chapters in, but decided against it. That was a great choice on my part, because this story and its characters develop at the same pace you fall in love with it. Every character has depth and some aspect of realism; though abiding general shoujo stereotypes (such as the bad boy, the nerdy girl, the pretty female friend etc) our main characters are so unique and well thought out that despite how strange they seem, it appears they're perfectly capable of being real people!

As previously stated by the other commenters, no one is despicable or generally antagonistic in this story, and as the love polygons shape you can't help but root for all the different characters to succeed with their love.

This said, love is another huge topic in this manga. Not clearly defined and not a hundred percent known by our characters, love is shown clearly with how it is in real life. Unlike most shoujo manga where love appears and our characters are completely aware of it, Tonari no Kaibutsukun shows how love in reality is ambiguous, and the transition into love is never really immediate either.

I won't say this manga is realistic, for obvious reasons regarding manga, but how the mangaka develops the characters and the relationships really mirror what happens in reality. Story-wise, this manga deserves a 10/10.
Aside from the story, the comedic side panels and odd occurances could make anyone chuckle, especially when they're made to soften the mood after a rather serious chapter. The art is beautiful as well, and the mangaka successfully brings out the emphasis in scenes where emotions are shown clearly by the way the faces are drawn.

:L okay first off this is so boring and slow paced... Nothings happening, i forgot everyone's name, and i feel like im wasting my time. So then i find myself skipping chapters and then it still seems as though i have not progressed very far into the manga! Im so fucking bored so yeah, the manga sucks.

I absolutely love this manga Why??

Because of their personalties

Haru is very possessive and childish. I love manga guys like him. Even though sometimes he act dumb but he isn't really a jerk.

Shizuku's character is one of my favorite and dream character for manga girls.. The stoic and smart type XD.. I love how she can be so straightforward (Like me :P).. How long have I been searching girls like her until I find about this manga.

Yamaken's character.. I just like him XD.. I love guys who hides their feelings from someone.. We all know that he likes Shizuku and I love how he suddenly (well sometimes) blush when shizuku is around

Sasayan's character (>v<).. I love how he can very supportive to his friends especially the loud girl (forget her name) I want to have a friend like him

The plot

The plot is so cool though its boring sometimes.

3)The art

I know its not really that great but for me its okay. I actually love how the mangaka draw their chibi styles XD.. Its so cute (No. 1 Chibi fan XD)

Well I'll rate this manga 10/10 XD.. I'm generous..

Smart, psychological romance

It's surprisingly deep and even quite dark. I'm especially intrigued about how it tackles:
1.) TEENAGE LOVE in all of its guises (or disguises?). Is it love? Is it infatuation? e.g. the main couple, up to the very recent volume, are still trying to figure out whether the thing they feel is love or just a spur of the moment emotion brought on by their circumstances.
2. The rather dark personalities of the main guy lead (Haru) and the other characters involved with his past (e.g. Yamaken) that the author skillfully weaves with the characters' "fun/comical" quirks. For example:

Haru is possessive to the point of being violent. He even talks about wanting to break the main girl's arms and legs so that she (Shizuku) would not be able to leave him. This manga is definitely more along the lines of Mars (Fuyumi Souryo) than say series like Koukou Debut or Ouran.

Very exciting love triangle is all I can say. Well-developed and very fun!
PLUS: The side characters are also interesting to read about, they're not just 'background cast' but characters with their own opinions, aspirations, etc. The authors also spend time and panels to delve into the histories of these characters and shows us how such could affect the way they react to the current story.

High Expectations

I like the characters' personalities and all but its become somewhat frustrating to see them awkwardly stumble around in their relationships. The misunderstandings and situations caused by the main characters' personalities have sort of worn out their welcome for me. But I'm still planning to continue with this manga because I have high expectations for when the character development picks up.

I love everything about this manga. especially the characters. I even love the side characters. what I've always hated and feared in shoujo manga is when the mangaka purposely writes a character in a way to make the audience despise them. I can't do that with this manga. each of them are lovable, hilarious and relatable.

what I really love about the female lead is that she is confident. that is something that lacks in shoujo heroines. typically, they dwell in self pity and wait for some prince to come save them. but this girl, knows what she wants and will get it. she's also not overbearing (you know the hardcore, shounen girl type). she's not the type that makes you want to facepalm, shizuku is the kind of girl you respect. in fact, I find shizuku extremely adorable and I totally understand why haru would like her.

and what one reviewer said about the plot. there really isn't a "plot". it really is just the development of characters. almost like koukou debut.... but the roles are reversed.

I think the reason why haru likes shizuku is because she brings out the best in him. she is everything that he isn't, and he strives to be like her. and I think that's why I love this manga so much. when two characters bring out the best in each other. haru really brings out a softer side of shizuku that she didn't even know she had. their relationship is so dynamic. honestly haru & shizuku is the ultimate manga couple :3

funny and refreshing. I like the female lead,strong type. Although she's pretty harsh sometimes. Not so cliche (there are some though),but it's really addicting. I wasted about 5 hours reading this. I usually don't read ongoing mangas and decided to take a peek but couldn't stop. The romance feels real since when one were to fall in love they would hesitate a lot,I know why Shizuku fell in love with Haru but I don't get why Haru loves her. If it was someone else who came to his house to deliver the copies. Will he fall for that someone else? Well,it's recommended ;]

First of all, the art is just beyond cute, which does set it up for great things. This manga is always very funny, light-hearted, yet does manage to poke fun at manga stereotypes. For example, even though the female lead is atypical, as well as a male with his eccentricities, their friends are the stereotypical "average boy" from shounen/shoujo, and the stupid shoujo heroine–––pretty, yet beyond annoying and way too energetic for my liking.
I really can't understand why people don't like the main character. She's realistic––she doesn't actually put /i/effort/i/ into being cold to people, she's just not a people person, and studying is her priority. There's nothing wrong with that. The author doesn't even take it overboard––her character manages to have depth, focus, and realism. The manga is actually about 3 parts friendship and 1 part romance. Even though the shoujo romance is entirely obvious, it's equally obvious that the author is trying to build a better friendship between them before actually getting them together. This was one of the more refreshing things about this manga, rather than having them get together and then learn about each other.

This manga is really good, but it's painful to see their relationship struggle. I think when Shizuku finally shows that Haru is equally important to her studies is when I will yell happily. Good Luck Shizuku and Haru!! I hope that the trans come out fast, because this is addicting.......i'm just wondering what happened to the Shizuku in the beginning that hugged Haru because he looked hopelessly sad.
