Bride of the Water God

Description

When Soah's impoverished, desperate village decides to sacrifice her to the Water God Habaek to end a long drought, they believe that drowning one beautiful girl will save their entire community and bring much-needed rain. Not only is Soah surprised to be rescued by the Water God-instead of killed-she never imagined she'd be a welcomed guest in Habaek's magical kingdom, where an exciting new life awaits her! Most surprising, however, is the Water God himself... and how very different he is from the monster Soah imagined.

...then the author started dragging it on longer than it needs to be. As a rule of thumb, shoujo-esque mangas should never exceed 50 chapters. Just by nature the cliches, the whining, the crying, the love triangles, the angst, the misunderstandings, the melodrama and bad decisions get irritating by that point so most authors think of wrapping it up by then.

Also, when I say fifty chapters, I mean for a story with a legit plot and semi-decent characters. This story has the blandest heroine I've ever seen, blander than Bella from Twilight or Hatsumi from Hot Gimmick. It's not even that she's weak, she just has no presence. I'm not sure why I'm should be rooting for her. The lead male has a terrible personality, which we as shoujo manga/manhwa readers have seen a thousand times over so it's nothing new. I wouldn't even describe their romance as a romance: their "love" just suddenly happened one chapter and then the girl that caused this whole plot to happen--Habaek's greatest love--didn't matter anymore.

It's shoujo but this story flows really unnaturally, it's getting too long and tends to go in circles. The sad part is this could have been an amazing manhwa if it was short and to the point. It's art was pretty enough but I wouldn't really recommend this series to anyone, even for the art.

Boring plot with great art skills

I started this one up again after a long hiatus. I remember the great artistic skills but not so much on the plot. Once I started rereading this, I realized how utterly confusing the plot was despite the fantastic artistic skills. Lets be honest, this manga is really just a poor excuse to showcase artwork. In which case, I feel I would have appreciated this more if it was just an artwork book instead.

The plot gets sidetracked a lot, most of it stemming from introducing too many characters all at once. They seem relevant for maybe 2-4 chapters and then we rarely see them again; it's a pain to have to memorize characters when you don't know if how long they will be relevant for. Not to mention, they mostly look the same. There's rarely any various combinations of looks. At one point, I was confused because I didn't know which character was being addressed (this girl looks like Mui's mother...but wait, she's in love with Mui... HUH?!!!) And then there are characters who were never as important in the beginning but now all of a sudden plays such a large role so now I'm stuck having to research who they were at the beginning of the series.

Character development is generally fine but I am rather disgusted by Soah's character portrayal. She is an insecure and pathetic woman who does not think in the long run. She is often easily persuaded by others who are obviously against her and creates such unnecessarily large drama (i.e. Mui turning into a human) that even she can't solve. She is entirely too dependent and doesn't really have a brain of her own, like a dimwitted puppy that needs saving all the time. Also, I am not a big fan of the Emperor's character portrayal. From my point of view as a reader, he really doesn't have any power that would really threaten people yet people manage to let him screw them all over the place. So far and this late in the series, he has never once proven himself to be a terrifying and all powerful Emperor...just some piece of sh!t who just...well, manipulates people and is a petty brat idiot.

At the beginning of the series, you'll love the artworks. It's amazing, so unique, so detailed and the details of fabric just seem so realistic and majestic that they are drawn with a lot love. Then once you move past that stage, you start to notice that actions such as "sword fighting, physical altercations" and so forth is rare...there are panels of splashes of blood instead to portray injury. Even things like limbs, the way they should be moving, is limited and looks very awkward when they are portraying a fight scene. Then you notice that facial emotions are very limited and sometimes, so stiff, that they are incorrectly portraying emotions. All of these details really add up and pretty soon, you're really just looking at an artwork book full of bubble captions.

This series was given 4* only because I feel that some plots worked better than others and because I really can't deny that this manga truly is a work of art (especially when it is digitally colored). I would probably recommend this only if you're a romantic sap looking for a damsel-in-distress, great but stiff artworks, "I guess I don't care too much about what I'm reading today" type of manga.

Alright so you start off really enjoying this manga. This plot is intriguing and the artwork is gorgeous. But as you advance farther and farther you sink into this rabbit hole of nonsense plot lines and too many characters to count doing God knows what. Ugh. It really upsets me because the artwork is so good but eventually the story just gets way too bad for it to even be worth reading anymore. I ended up having to drop it. I just wish the author had known when to stop to story....or even where she was going with this story because at this point its just an endless string of pointless misery, odd love triangles, and dumb competition. If ratings went by artwork alone I'd give it a 10 but if you include the story its more like a 4.

Okay so I dropped this manhwa after around ch 70, then I read it until the last update once again. Still love the art, but I'm getting so tired all these tragedies, one after another!!!! The storyline is dragging a bit too much. I just want Mui and So-ah to end up happily together already. Like god damn it, so-ah should have just become a god already! Instead...

Another freaking goddess had to interfere and now soah's got another mortal girl as a rival who saw mui in his real form. >:( Hope soah's new rival dies as soon as possible and mui and her end up happily together in the god world once again!!!

Dragging on forever

I loved the art, and it had such great potential in the beginning chapters but holy crap, it's like a never-ending train wreck. The moment one problem is solved, there's another scheme or plot that the protagonist is dragged into.
At times I think about just dropping the story all together, but I love the art too much. I guess I'll wait until this is finished before getting back into it and changing my rating :/

I loved the first volumes, the art, the costumes, the scenery, everything was so original! I didn't even mind the confusing aspects because it hinted at hidden depths and I loved the plotting going on in the background, how every single character was following their own agenda, to which, as the reader, you're not privy to, only making things more interesting. And that was what made the charm of this manhwa, because the overall romance plot is pretty cliché.

But when coming back to it after a while, I realise that what held me fascinated in the first 10 volumes or so doesn't work anymore. As reviewers have already pointed out, Soah is pretty tasteless and bland and she didn't grow at all throughout the series, her sole defining attribute is that she's a pretty girl in love, but as this is a romance shoujo that's not saying much. The problem is that Mui suffers from more or less the same problem, he's a dark, tall and handsome figure all right, but 10 volumes in the characterization is a little thin!

What's more is that the evolution of the romance is not romantic or memorable, I've reached the wedding night and it pulled me straight out of my read, you've got every single sexist cliché about the blushing bride (and the reminiscence of Soah's hardheadedness in the first chapters is only worse now that she's come to this!) who's at the disposal of the husband and has to wait for him to come and 'claim his prize'. Then comes the 'I pin your wrists to the bed and loom over you because that's hot' and no preliminaries whatsoever for this virgin before he attempts to penetrate her either. Surely the strength of her love is supposed to make up for the pain and the fact that her pleasure, and her playing an active part in the obtaining of that pleasure, are apparently an impossibility.

I'm well aware that this is a common depiction of sex, where it's all about the male being a male, (and the woman being a simple recipient) and that it even plays in the common feminine fantasies about sex (in this patriarchal culture we globally live in where a woman who likes sex is a wh*re (but a guy's just a guy!) it takes away the feelings of guilt (wrongly!) attached to have the man take 'control', if he's in charge then you're not responsible, you did not actively seek pleasure so it's not your fault you're engaging in such shameful behaviour etc...) but it doesn't make it any less misogynistic, healthy or OK.

So yeah, as much as I loved it in the beginning, I'm really not sure I'll ever finish it.

Note: I've read this a couple years back, so this is a late review. Just heard their was a spin off of a drama adaption being made, so just here to leave a review in case anyone new is interested in reading this.

This manhwa was a let down after finishing it. I tried to hope that it would get better as I read on, but like others I couldn't go on and just skipped to the ending only to see that the ending was also a huge let down too.

For one, the female lead's character totally flipped 360 as the story prolonged. She became a damsel in distress. Yep, that's right! After the strong start on her personality at the beginning, the author just drifted her character off and made her into a weak female lead that needed to be saved all the time. There was repetitive plot being added, annoying extra characters that were only just there to drag the story and the characters all lacked emotions as the story prolonged. They either had a straight face or just a few blushes, but that's about it. The only good thing about this manhwa was the art. The plot could have been something more, but the author didn't use it to her advantage and it turned into just a huge mess after, just so she could continue to milk more money from her best selling manhwa. I know earning money is important, but when the plot and characters start to lose itself, that's when you know you need to end the story. But what she did instead was dragged and prolonged it, when it could have ended on a nice note without adding unnecessary drama that didn't need to be in the plot.

Anyways, it's not worth reading if you're looking to read something with more in depth plot, strong character development, and strong female leads. If you like the art and can look pass the draggy plot, you can give this a try. If you're looking for something similar to this that has awesome plot and characters, then I recommend: "Savage Garden", "Saver", or "Otoyomegatari" (though Otoyomegatari is more slice of life mixed with politics and mature content). I'll also recommend similar novels (fantasy or historical plot themes) too with strong female leads that are worth reading - 1/2 Prince (also has a manhua adaption), Descent of the Phoenix (also has a manhua adaption), My Disciple Died Yet Again, Accompanying the Phoenix, and Jiang Hu’s Road is Curved.

To be frank, this isn't nearly as good as I was expecting.

(Admittedly though, after hearing everyone and their brother exclaim over how amazing this manhwa is, with art better than anything else and a really amazing and original plot, said expectations were pretty high.)

The art is pretty, and the occasional full-color pages are cool, since you don't usually see those, let alone done somewhat well, but I didn't think it was anything worth squealing over. In fact, I sometimes can't tell the genders apart, which is annoying - I assumed Yo-hee was guy until, many chapters down the road, someone referred to her as 'she'. And of course, there's the fact that we have two or three characters who look, well, almost exactly alike.

And the story, while certainly out of the ordinary, was just confusing. Sometimes there are time-skips, memory flashes that seem to occur for no apparent reason, but you're not told this and have to figure it out three chapters down the road when you flash back. And I could handle that, I suppose, if they actually cleared things up or explained something to the reader, but half the time they just make things more muddled.

And, at one point, Soah gets sent back to her world because of some...bet? That if she lost her memory wouldn't remember Habaek's name - and she doesn't remember. Several times. Yet the bet isn't lost, and it isn't explained why. And that's just one instance.

And then there's random side stories, and plot twists that don't make sense, and of course, very little real story progression for about forty-something chapters - I've read up to chapter 93, expecting to eventually get some clarity around the story, but I still have almost no clue what is going on.

The characters aren't too cliche, the art is pretty, and the plot is different, but that's about all I can say for this. But, hey, that's just my opinion - I know a lot of other people read and enjoy this series and they really love the artwork and the complexity of the story. I'd say read about the first five or ten chapters to see whose tastes you agree with.

I love the way the plot goes - the characters were revealed slowly unlike some other manga/manhwa where the main characters started making out at the end of first 100pages. The slow but detailed storyline allows us to understand the characters deeply (and i realized that i dont hate any of the characters so far because all of them have their reasons to be who they are - after 77chapters)..
Though i must admit that there are some plots where i got annoyed because of the slow moving flashbacks and the lack of emotional expressions at critical times (especially when a character seems to be shouting but her facial expression doesn't show that at all). However, all these can be forgiven because the author is pretty inexperienced.

Overall, this is a good manhwa to read especially if you love pretty drawings (and very much detailed) and the main characters don't fall in love at first sight with no reason at all.

I decided to drop this manga after the continuous dragging and repetition of ZERO plots.

Moving pictures manhwa

This manhwa does not rely on text to move the story along, but rather lush settings and beautiful character drawings. I do not know why people are saying the plot goes all over the place, because it's a pretty slow story and there's not much to be confused about. Two volumes have so far been published, but it is still going to be published by Dark Horse in 2009. If you want to experiment with reading manhwa, please do so with this series!
