Bride of the Water God

Description

When Soah's impoverished, desperate village decides to sacrifice her to the Water God Habaek to end a long drought, they believe that drowning one beautiful girl will save their entire community and bring much-needed rain. Not only is Soah surprised to be rescued by the Water God-instead of killed-she never imagined she'd be a welcomed guest in Habaek's magical kingdom, where an exciting new life awaits her! Most surprising, however, is the Water God himself... and how very different he is from the monster Soah imagined.

The author has such beautiful skill in artistry and the initial idea is interesting as is the world she has created; the problem as aforementioned in previous reviews is in the characterisation and plot. It's overly convoluted to the point that everyone has some sort of scheme or dark past no one is truthful which makes it incredibly difficult to like anyone because you never get to truly know anyone. That and the plot at times is so difficult to understand (I commend the scanlators for trying their best to give us the story) it nearly makes no sense at all. The heroine is truly bland, a beautifully crafted heroine but that's all that there is to her. The rest are all pretty clichéd with Machiavellian elements thrown in, they read like an overcooked kmelodrama (and I've seen my fair share). Its a great shame because it is just so beautiful to look at but with all its complications it becomes a bore and a chore to read.

bland heroine

my biggest problem with this series is the heroine. she's impossibly weak, there is a lack of character development and frankly, she is simply bland as a person. she also doubts Mui over and over again despite his multiple reassurances. all other characters are pretty well done and the plot would have been so much better if the heroine was given more of a character. the only thing that is making me stick with this is the art work and the main hero. unlike Soah, he is wonderful.

Edit: The plot is going down the drain. It seems like the author is pulling a Naruto/Bleach.

Art is the best part

I stopped really reading this manwha quite a few volumes ago mostly because the plot got a little too messed up for me and it was hard to recall all that happened within the time that the next update would come out. I skim most of it now and get the gist of what is happening. The only reason why I havent dropped it completely is because the art has kept me going.

Too confusing

I used to love this series, but now I've stopped reading it, so the 10 turns into a 6. It's just too confusing. The plot goes all over the place. The artwork is beautiful, but YOON Mi-kyung doesn't delineate who's who that well and just assumes that u know what everyone looks like from every angle. Random characters appear and disappear and no name is given to them for quite some time. Apart from a few characters, not enough characterization occurs.

Let me say that I'm a big fan of dark, dramatic shoujo, especially when it involves a relationship between a human and another entity.

Bride of the Water God is one of the manhwa that you will either love or hate. It's not for everyone. It starts very slowly and the author dedicate a lot of time in the relationship of the two protagonists. She spends like 7 volumes if I remember correctly for

Soah to realize that Mui is Habaek.

Somewhat later, the author is focusing more on the other gods and the hostilities between them. We get to see that it's not only about the romance between the 2 main characters but there is more. Pretty much a war.
However, I agree with some people that it is confusing at some parts; That because the story-telling ain't the best and it can confuse you easily if you won't pay much of attention. Many times the story-telling is not linear and it jumps to other scenes where you might have no idea what is going-on. Or many times, the author is not mentioning the names of the characters who talk and you have to memorize their appearance to remember who they are. But yes, the story is quite original.

Now, some of the characters are a problem. Mainly Soah. I don't hate Soah but the author hasn't given her any personality at all. She just stands there saying that she loves Habaek, etc. For example,

She was easily used as a pawn by the Emperor, yet she did nothing. Later again, she is tricked so easily. I haven't seen her having any resistance against the enemies at all.

And Habaek. Habaek is a god but many times he is acting like an emo boy. Like at first,

He is so buried in the past with Nakbin and even if he meets Soah to make a new start, he is obsessed with Nakbin again. Or very later when he gives up his powers to become a human and live with Soah; How stupid can that be? Habaek is a key figure in this war between gods, yet he give up the only protection he can offer to Soah. Even if he is a god, his decisions are not wise.

The artwork is amazing, however I prefer the sceneries she draws. They are simple stunning and they give you an air of traditional asian atmosphere.

Yes, this manhwa does has flaws but if you do not mind them, it is a great read. But only for the patient ones.

Good I guess..

This story is so confusing! It's kind of a dark tale and there aren't many happy cutesy moments that don't follow up with angst. The story is really hard to keep up with, especially if you stop reading the story for a while - it's difficult to remember all the character names and their flashbacks (ie. importance in the plot). I forgot that there was any plot going on at some point..as the story seemed to make little progress after chapter 50 or so..

The art is really nice and detailed, although I'm not that impressed by the super pointy anatomy of the illustration, and the weird proportions. A lot of the positions (most notably the feet) are really awkward looking. I do LOVE the costumes and settings though, it's just that the characters don't really feel any more special to me than most mangas, if not less than average. Because of the similar facial features, I mix up a LOT of characters (including dudes and girls!), they are all tall and beautiful..but they almost all have similar expressions (ie. emotionless..sometimes they look like they are on cloud 9 too), if it weren't for the distinct costumes and sometimes hair, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference even if dialogue/monologue were there (indication of weak character impression upon the reader..). If I had to sit down and describe all the characters, I'd probably sit for an hour and only come up with something like "she's nice. He's mean." ..there's just too much put into the confusing story that we can't even see what kind of characters we are dealing with!!

It didn't leave an impression on me..

Beautiful but complicated

the artwork is absolutely beautiful, the scenery, the gods, everything. however, the thing about Nakbin has dragged on for too long, and storyline is slow moving. hope to see more on hooye and soah, and habaek is quite annoying for not being able to let go of nakbin. very complicated, especially about the part on the war, the emperor thingy.

The artwork in this is absolutely gorgeous, for the first bit reading this that was the main draw for me as it is really stunning. However now that I'm on chapter 52 I'm finding the plot dragging a bit. It gets quite complex and somewhat confusing, but at the same time feels as though everything is being dragged on forever and there is no resolution.

Plot is lacking

It's very pretty, yes, but 60+ chapters in, and nothing's. happened. yet. You know exactly as much about the characters as you did as when the chapter was in the teens, and there is only a vague ominous rumble due to the tired, rehashed "evil mother-in-law" subplot. There's nothing overtly bad about this manhwa, but the author needs to sharpen her writing skills.

Starts of well but...gets a bit boring

When I started reading this I was all "Kyaaaa! The art's so goooorgeous". The guys are really hot (cool?) and all...but as you read on and somewhat get used to the art, the plot gets a bit boring, and I don't feel much apprehension, in other words, I'm not that excited to see what's coming next.
I don't get what's so special about Soah to have guys falling for him, she might be pretty, but she doesn't show much character, she hardly has any character at all or maybe I couldn't notice it?
I don't know the general opinion but personally I don't really like the love triangles in Korean manhua/dramas. They're kind of annoying. There always seems to be unresolved feelings left, I don't feel that way with Japanese love triangles. Not to mention there is almost always four people in it (love square? lol) -in case there's any confusion: main girl character X prince Charming I ( they fall in love), prince Charming II (also falls in love with heroine), and girl number II whom prince Charming I loved in the past although she didn't return his feelings, but has changed her mind and wants to get her prince back.
All in all, manga is for bored people to read, the plot may not be so great (maybe not yet) but the art's worth reading.
