Description

Fresh out of college, Kumiko "Yankumi" Yamaguchi becomes a math teacher at an all-boys high school. Unfortunately for her, she's assigned by the school board as the homeroom teacher for class 2-D, which happens to be the class of delinquent students. When the class attempts to make a living hell out of Yankumi's career, they fail as her persistence and aggression gain their respect. However, little does anyone in the school know that Yankumi is actually heir to the Kuroda Group - one of Tokyo's most powerful yakuza clans.

My Favorite Comfort Manga

I can't recommend this series highly enough. It's short, funny, and still manages to capture your heart. The romance is subtle, which I appreciate, and doesn't really happen until after

Shin graduates and you only really see this fleshed out in the extras.

There are so many things going on but the heart of the manga stays the same - Yankumi's love of her students and how she uses her strength to push them forward. She really is their ally and watches out for them. Because the story chapters are shorter, there's never a sense of being bogged down with a long, boring arc. It moves fast.

As an adult reading it, I can see a lot of really good things I never noticed before...

How Yankumi really doesn't view Shin as a romantic partner at all, which I appreciate since she is his teacher, but how she does rely on him and highly esteem him. How Shinohara doesn't really appreciate Yankumi's absolute wildness but would rather ask her to tone it down while Shin just follows hard after. The conversation between Shin and Shinohara is probably my favorite -- he really gets involved because he chooses to, he wants to pursue law because of them and to help them, and not because he feels forced to repay a debt.

Like I said, I've read this manga so many times and it never fails to comfort and warm my heart. It's a comedy, so there are gag things, but the heart of the story is what makes you come back over and over again.

I'm actually surprised that I haven't commented on this manga before now. I'm on my way to reading it for the third time, and I'm so excited! When I read it the first few times, I laughed so hard I cried. Like it's often mentioned, there isn't much romance, but Shin's such a trooper! I, too would have liked there to be more romance, but it's a great manga as it is.
Don't let the art dissuade you from reading Gokusen! I didn't like it to begin with, either, but it's really a great medium for the story, and I can't imagine it being drawn any other way. I'm quite fond of it now!
About the drama: I was really disappointed. The manga had more romance than the drama did! Romance wasn't a thing in the drama. I couldn't even finish watching it!
Anyway, read this or your life will be lacklustre! 😛

Good, but not as good as I was expecting

As the title says.
It was a good read, it really was. But for it's story, it's way too long. There's too much pointless filler, needless specials (what the heck was up with the SawadaxFuji ones??), and incredibly unnecessary story arcs. In its defense, though, it was very funny (I actually laughed out loud at times, very rare in my case), and the characters all had a lot of spunk. The romance felt a little shoehorned in, but it did give a little more oomph to it. Also, I liked

that the students were the ones who were more often being rescued.

The art... well, it does improve a little bit from the beginning. It's hard to get used to that aspect, but I've certainly seen worse.
It's got its rough patches, but it's still a great read.

you may or may not like this series as they are pretty much different.
Gokusen is funny, well-developed and it has nicely done Characters you can like or hate and watch how they change. Yankumi's wierd idoicy, Yakuza family and her crashes makes this manga funny, interesting and moving.

what i like most about this manga is that it has character based plots.

Since i wrote that i dissliked GTO for so many reasons but love the Live action i just have to say ITS THE SAME THING HERE
well not really
i like the art alot better in Gokusen than GTO
the jokes in gokusen r more ...grown up...
sex jokes on everypage like in gto gets a bit boring after sometime since its so much...
so the comedy is better in gokusen i say
but the real reason why i love gokusen is the live action
Nakama Yukie who play Yankumi is t3h pretty
and well one of the best jdrama since gto...
so go watch the live action and be happy that this manga
could produce something so good

i cant help comparing gto and gokusen...

Reminds me of Tokyo Crazy Paradise (only because I read that first), but with a little less emphasis on romance. I agree with all the other comments that says how great this manga is. Go read it if you haven't!

Well, I forgot what else I wanted to add, but I'll come back to edit this comment. Conclusively, to describe this manga in one word: WONDERFUL.

It's worth the all nighter! Sad to say the drama does it no justice. The drama's good...no great! But this... THIS IS SPECTACULAR!!! The only flaw is that I don't know how it end for the couple! What about that guy talking to Shin and Yukumi at the end? At least not a cliff-hanger or the treacherous axed ending! Those make me "CRAY". Anyway it's a 10

No words to express how awesome this is. Hilarious, action-packed and you wont even put it down. Ive been reading it for the past 8 hours and it`s 4 in the morning and I just finished! I wish there was more, a bit more. The ending was a bit abrupt but the story will never get you bored. Wish there was more Kumiko/Shin romance :">

Worth reading

Although many don't like the art, or, rather, don't think much of it in the beginning, compared to some mangas, it wasn't too bad. It does get better as you read on, and I must say that the panelling/framing of the manga is a strong point. The number of frames on a page was often only three or four but the story still moved at a good pace.
The heroine was strong, she fought for her students and believed in them, and she wasn't "beautiful" (although the artwork didn't really allow for beautiful people...). The only thing I could have wished for was slightly more romance before the series ended. I know there were stories after the main series finished, but (being the romantic that I am) I would've liked to see them properly together.
A word on the j-drama: personally, having watched the drama first, then read the manga, I liked it. They captured most of the characters', and certainly the heroine's, personalities. I would recommend it.
In short, I would recommend this; I read it in three days
