Description

In 18th-century England, Gabriel, an orphan girl from a fallen noble family befriended a young man named Jeremy, who was rumored to be an illegitimate child of a nobleman. After an incident occurred, resulting in his tragic death, Gabriel must impersonate her friend Jeremy, taking his place at an all boys academy for nobles, a place that may seem like heaven to others, but really hides a harshness which she would never have imagined.

Mixed Feelings

Euan didn't have to die and the fact that he dodged death once but died immediately after felt forced. He died in the penultimate chapter, then we had a time skip then Ray and Gabriel were united. Voola bittersweet ending. I feel like the author just wanted someone to die to make this a tragedy. Deaths are all right and in fact, I love sad endings as much as happy endings as long as they're all beautiful and compelling. Euan's death, however, felt stupid and out of no where. You know, deus ex machina. It felt wasted for the fact that we got to see no reaction from the main cast and just got a quick review of what happened in the time skip.

Plus, the reason Gabriel and Ray were separated was stupid. Apparently, she never left to America but stayed at a different city and didn't want to go meet Ray. That makes no sense at all. If Gabriel had a brain and loved Ray, she would have known that he was suffering and would not be able to leave him alone like that. If you love someone, you provide support when they are in hell, not leave them there to burn.

I love the atmosphere and the tone of the manga even though the plot was a bit lacking and the climax wasn't solved very well.

There is no other word-this manhwa is absolutely beautiful. You fall in love with the art at the first glance, and then you fall in love with the characters, and then the story. This is one of the most realistic stories based in a historical setting, and its gender bender aspect isn't a mere whim of the heroine, but one of the main dramatic reasons for the story.

The manhwa artistically depicts the multitude of flaws in life, especially in 18th century England (it IS based on 18th century I think but I may be wrong). The vain-ness and languid life of the nobility, and the indulgences and vices and corruption that starts out young. As the story goes on you get hungrier for more, and then all of a sudden it ends.

Yes, my only complain is how it ended... Even extending the manhwa further by one or two chapters would have made it graceful as the rest of the story, but it didn't happen. So all you can do is console yourself with your own colorful imagination.

No, I lied. I do have another complain.

Did Euan really have to die? It felt as if the author knew Euan was a far better protagonist than Ray and there was no way Euan wouldn't be the one Jeremy/Gabriel ended up with so she had to kill him. Even his way of dying had no significance... if only he'd died while fighting for her... he won that battle but lost the war. Killed for a crime he didn't even commit - how cruel. But then I suppose it goes with the theme of the story, the capricious nature of nobility and fate. But it was to cruel, and not well-executed at all... And bringing the time skip right after? Hasty, hasty.

Rushed ending nonetheless, I highly recommend this manhwa. You'll love it, absolutely love it to the extent that you'd wail it wasn't a bit longer, just like I'm doing now 🙂

I really liked this Manhwa, the art was beautiful and the plot/story was so dark that I felt like it swallowed me. This manhwa had characters and storyline that fit my taste so I really liked it. It was mysterious, dark, angst, mad,bewitching, sad, exciting, intriguing and so much more. It made me love the characters, love their pasts, love what made them do the twisted actions they did, even for the characters you wouldn't like it at least made you sympathise with them. It was something that pretty much had all the stuff that I like in my Manhwas.

Now that I've somewhat finished all the praise I have for it, here comes my complaints. Like many have pointed out it was rather rushed. It was too confusing. Despite me saying how I love how this Manhwa had all the ideas and scenes I love to read in the opposite way you could say the author hurriedly crammed the manhwa full of them and some just didn't work that well. I found that this manhwa didn't really draw out my emotions despite all the things in it that should have, and I'm someone who shows my emotions a lot. I also second that the ending wasn't that satisfactory, I expected that it'd make me cry and I thought it would but it wasnt developed enough to make me do that which I found a shame. I liked the ending but it just feels like lower quality than the rest of the manhwa especially since it just felt like a while lot of time skips and non explained events. It was too rushed and confusing. The start as well, I didn't really get it at all at first!

I suppose to sum it up I love this manhwa yet it did disappoint me, not disappointing enough to make me feel like I wasted my time, no, I feel that it was worth my time. But yes it just left me feeling a bit empty and dazed. Well there's my mess of opinions.

This manga could have resolved a bit more of the loose ends that it planted throughout the plot at the end, but i'm relieved that it didn't. After reading the author's reflections about the piece, I learned that she wanted to portray the vanity and cruelty of the aristocratic society of that year and etc. In that way, it makes sense that not everything was explained, because we as normal people should be completely able to reason the cruel ways of the aristocracy.

This manga does require some maturity in its readers. There is a lot of promiscuity that is purposefully glamorized with pretty drawings and lavishness all around.

That leaves you with a sorta unclear ending but with a reason for it, amazingly beautiful art and compelling characters. Read it.

Tragic - and storywise longing for too much.

To begin with - It was a nice read and the atmosphere got me right away, altough I hardly like any historical settings. Probably the setting of some well-known elements, like the consume of absinthe or the Belladonna berries, have had a nice effect.

The drawing style was also likeable, although it wasn't outstanding or remarkable in a specific way. It's clean lines and sketchy style matched the whole way of how the story was told. You have your blank spots, which must be accepted considering the length of the Manhwa. Therefore the reduced artwork was somehow just right with this feel in my eyes.

The characters are well developed and after the first chapters, they can be differentiated quite clear. As for me, especially Euan and Ray have been caught my interest. The relationship between the brothers has been nicely put in scene, without touching the line of the cliched boys love scenario. The are different, yet have become close, while facing the hardships bound to their social status and home. The other characters have their nice points, too. Although the main character came off a bit wavering, even though her emotions are stable and understandable.

The plot itself is interesting, but longs just for too much by times. It might have been a good idea, to keep a closer look on the order of things and their meaning. Every now and then, I was asking myself, if such a tragic issue or dramatic feeling can be resolved just like that, while moving on to the next step. The ending was okay, but ...

I agree about the resolving of Euans feelings. It was a matching end, implicated right from the get go, that his easy way with affairs might get him one day, so the death of him isn't my point of critic. It's more, how his feelings for Gabriel just seemed to fade and become another mood swing, after he had a hard time facing her in a non-passionate (or impulsive) manner before. It's clear, why he kind of chooses Ray's well-being before his unrequited love, yet it was somehow weird how he smiled, knowing his brother will be in pain after his doing.

To sum it up, you get a nice read with this Manhwa, but you should consider the depth of the elements involved and the length of it. ^^

It was okay. I liked it at time and at times not. Someone people died for no reason. I wasn't even sad! I was just like wtf o_0 Tragedy okay if it leads to development. When I was done all I thought was "waste of time" =o=. I used to like gender-bender. Now I know just read yaoi. No I won't let this ruin GB. Yaoi is different enjoyment like shoujo mahou.

Beautiful art and good story... I thought it was real good till i reached the last volume and the two last chapters , then it became average...

why did the author have to kill euan? I don't believe it!! in my opinion he was the best character in this story, I was hoping for gabriel and euan, not killing euan and sending her to Ray.
Somehow I wished ray would remember the past and go mad or run away or kill himself. unlike his brother he was a weak person...
It was sad to see euan sacrificing everything in his life for ray and at last even his life but I think it was one of the strengths of his character which made him seem more adult than his actual age.

Anyway, wish there was more to this story and it wasn't so rushed.

WHAT THE FCK!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! HE DIED?!

EUAN DIED?! GODDAMN -__- lol.

Gosh I'm so sad right now..it was a splendid story. I wish it was a little longer. But I'm really happy with the couple in the end. Actually I would have been happy if it was Jeremy x Euan or Jeremy x Ray. I just wasn't expecting someone to pass away 1 chapter before the final chapter. After all those hardships... >_> I really didn't care about the outside world or the other dilemmas. I just wanted to read more about her life in the school trying to get by as a boy and how the brothers showed their love for her, their jealous side, their playful side..etc. Sigh, this was my second time reading it..but now that the ending had hit me in a not-so-great way again..I don't want to reread it in the future 🙁

LEE Hyeon-Sook sensei is really good in storytelling, and not only in illustrating pretty art in panels. She would wove a story with several characters, not like any typical shoujo cliche where the romance greatly center on the main charas alone. She would always manage to create a theme in her stories, and this time, it's victorian style. The only common theme I can see from her being in shoujo catergory is the school life aside from the usual trait in shoujo which is in love interest. I say this series is good but not the other two manhwa I read from hers. While the story ended somehow happy for the two main characters, it's not for the others. I think Eun and Angela also deserve to be happy. In addition to that, while the pacing was really good from vol 1 towards vol 6, vol 7 ended rather in rush to my taste too, just what others here said about the ending.

While I said that other characters have tragic end to theirs' stories, I also think that made impact an impression on me about their characters and on this manhwa, of which provoked me to have thoughts of the ending I would have like to see but, that's sensei for you. She managed to captivate her readers and eventually provoke their thoughts.

There some questions left unanswered to me like, who really killed Marianne. Did Gabriel went to America or did she ever leave London?

Truthfully, I was rooting for Eun for Gabriel. He really cares for her. Eun is mature but due to his maturity, he would sacrifice things even for his own happiness. He is really a good older brother. Ah poor Euan...even how his life ended.

Sensei why did you created that tensions? That tensions and atmosphere that gripped my heart whenever Eun long to reach out to Jeremy but couldn't. Ah...my heart. I had my hope for them but got crushed in the end. Eun, can I have you myself instead? :D

Rushed and confusing

It is a beautiful story, with nice characters, but it left me in a confused state, where I could not destinguish between them even at the end of manhwa. It is really rushed, with illogical plot twists and even romance is irregular. It is kinda sad, the ending does not bring any satisfaction.
Hovewer, The art is beautifull, and emotions are well displayed, and you can read it all in just a couple of hours. I personaly like gender-bender staff and manhwa, so it was just for me, but it does not compete with any decent manga out there. Still, I would like to thank scanlators for quality work.
