Not as bad as I thought it was going to be

So I really like the idea behind the "guy in transported/reincarnated into a new world" subgenre of manga, but I've always felt like they're just kind of lacking when considered on an individual basis. So far I haven't really found one I'd consider perfect or amazing but this is probably what I'd consider the best of what I've read.

First the positives, I really like the art in this overall. It's nice and even though the action gets a little hard to follow at times I never find myself confused or frustrated during fight scenes. I like the main characters for the most part, and when side characters are actually given a chance to shine it feels rewarding. I also like the world they establish, it's generic fantasy but at least there's a couple,of touches to make it unique.

Now to some negatives, which really kept me from enjoying this to the fullest. First off, I really don't get behind the fact that the entire kingdom basically shits all over our main character because he has a shield. I mean the whole setup for him being villanized is so contrived it just feels disingenuous. This leads to our main character having this righteous anger for the large majority of the story, and man I just think the guy acts like such a dick sometimes. I get it, we're supposed to feel for him and really get behind his bursts of anger at these people who treat him like garbage. But every time I just kept thinking that a real hero would probably, you know, be the better man in a lot of those situations. I'm not saying that he has to act the way I demand or anything, it just made me not really sympathize with him as much even though he does act like a hero in plenty of other ways (like rescuing the common folk and at least trying to get the oer heroes to work as a team).

While we're on the subject, I just want to say how much I just generally dislike the king and princess. I know that's the point and all, but their hatred of the shield hero just seems so forced. I just wish they had been made a bit more well rounded. I'm cool with the king being a jerk but c'mon set up an actual good REASON to hate the hero, not this "well our religion says to hate shield heroes for some reason so..." stuff

The other problem I have is with the other heroes. Once again I know what they're trying to do, make them all less powerful or intelligent than the main character so he can shine more. The problem is that they're made so incompetent it kind of strains credibility. So many times the other heroes are borderline useless or at times a straight up hindrance, all so once again the shield hero can seem far more capable in the story. It's not that I wanted the other heroes to be way more powerful than our main character or anything but if they had actual character arcs or maybe if one of them wasn't a total chode that would have been nice. That's the thing, all I wanted was for one of them to not be a total dick. Just have one of the heroes following along with the others but have him clearly not be ok with all of this dickey against the shield hero. But no, all of them have to look like total fools so that our main character is in the right.

Really, the problem with this story is the convenience of it all. The other heroes are conveniently all complete morons. Our main character conveniently gets upgrades when he needs to beat bosses. He conveniently gets the absolute best monster pet EVER from the monster egg lotto. There's more but I don't want to spoil things too much. Its just that at some point it really did start to grate on my nerves

Look you probably think I hate this manga. I don't. But it does have a lot of flaws. It comes across like some angry lonely person wrote this. His main character gets to rage at the world, be the best and coolest ever while still being disliked by the authorities because he's a bad boy who doesn't play by the rules, and of course have a harem of girls that follow him around and are also conveniently ok with being part of a harem. There's still a lot to like of course, or at least enough to keep me going. But man, when I say I like this series "warts and all" I really mean it when I say it has warts.

It's just not convincing.

The entire point of this manga is to rile up the reader's righteous fury that is to be appeased when eventually, our hero who was continuously shat on for no good reason, rises up in the end against his enemies and, much to our great satisfaction, proves them all wrong.

That's not to say that I don't appreciate righteous gratification; an example of a manga doing this correctly would be Geuk-Jin Jeon's "The Breaker", which I have no complaints against. So what the heck's my problem with Tate no Yuusha?

To be specific: the circumstances that led to our hero being rejected is just plain unbelievable, and the consequences that builds on such a shaky premise only leads to more confusion. Maybe it's because I watch too much Captain America, but discriminating against a hero just because he uses a shield as a weapon is just SO BS. Not only that, but I question the writer's decision that the way in which our protagonist fell into anti hero-hood was the best, most convincing way to buy the readers into it. The writing just reeks of BS, superficiality, and half assedness.

That being said, I still enjoyed it, maybe more than I should have. Despite my criticism, I actually found myself marathoning through all 27 chapters, and found myself slightly disappointed that there wasn't more. If I had to recommend this manga to any of my peers, I would do so with the advice to keep an open mind.

The Hero is a Demon King

This manga is one that I truly do appriciate. Some of the other commentors stated that it is like listening to an angsty teen who is all like "woa is me! I hate this world yada yada yada". Yet isnt that part of our human nature that we have become familiar with? The "what's in it for me" mind set?

You were whisked away from a world you called home. You dont know the people or its laws and government system. You are even given a sh*tty piece equipment. From the moment you walked into the throne room everyone looked at you in mistrust and outright resentment. You so called allies, the other heroes, humiliate and ridicule you in front of the rich and powerful...the very people who expect you to fight with them.

When the king gives everyone the chance to gain allies, no one chose you. You became the unwanted. Then someone offers you a hand in friendship. Finally you have a comrade to guard your back. That is until that very person, the only one you thought you could rely on, speaks out against you and causes slander and heresy. Now you have no one. You have enemies all around you and yet you are still expected to save them?

For me I like how Naofumi is all f them I'll do what i want mindset.

The art is decent the characters are okay. This story will be on my reading list for now.

****i really hope that King Ding dong and Princess Bit ch have karma give them whats coming to them

Superficially emotional, but effective

claudiofd, the fellow who wrote a review back in 2014 on this site already sums up pretty much everything I would say about this series. I was kind of surprised to see someone who literally summed up almost every thought I've had about this series.

The fantasy escapist / wish-fulfillment genre is incredibly pervasive and only continues to grow but not in a positive way considering the poor writing often contained within them. The genre tends to always garner incredibly high ratings and views, but this is only because of sympathetic readers rather than critical ones. This is yet another LN to manga entry into that specific genre, however, it features a stronger appeal to emotion than most by using characters that are seemingly thrown away by the world they (currently) inhabit in the extreme, which at a surface level is very emotionally appealing, especially if one has ever had that feeling (not necessarily uncommon for a young person). Even the whole relationship between the protagonist and the slave girl is superficially endearing by the idea of the "poor and discarded" main character helping a "cute and damaged" girl with no options despite him having next to nothing. Together they have little but grow together and almost become something of a family. She comes to see he has a heart of gold that others can't see despite her being his slave by technicality. That whole idea seems touching if one doesn't think about the more ridiculous aspects of it, and it certainly is ridiculous in truth.

I understand all too well why this series is so overrated. I initially fell right into the emotional trap of the story when I first read the manga. I didn't put much thought into the reading and it seemed like a wonderful endearing story if a bit strange in the way it was presented. The problem came about when I started thinking about things on just a basic level and then I read some of the LN which solidified my negative thoughts. I came to realization that the entire basis of the series was incredibly superficial and feels like reading the fantasy story of some angsty and bitter teenager who blames the world for his problems. It became entirely impossible for me to enjoy it after putting any thought into the reading. The manga somehow did a surprisingly good job covering up how contrived and shallow the series actually is, but either way the LN was absolutely unbearable for me. I could say more but the whole topic has already been discussed in past reviews.

When it comes down to it; this is just yet another overrated fantasy escapist series but with an emotional hook that can easily sway at a glance. I'd recommend keeping the brain off if you want to read this manga, since if you do, you might find this to be impressively emotionally compelling as many have.

Not bad, but...

I think Desperate Joker nails it pretty much in his post, it's starts interesting but the char development doesn't seem too solid, in a mere few chapters he's completely over his resentment (I didn't actually find abandoning unrelated people to their death as logical either thou), becomes an altruist undercover under the veil of receiving payment and has all the indication of going the harem route, I'll try reading a bit of the novel but that certainly seams to be the case. Also, the antagonists are way too lame and are hard to take seriously, the king acts like an imbecile, the spear hero has his ass kicked and is ridiculed each time and Mein is too dumb and rotten.
On the good side the premise is good, the chars are not bad and the relation with Raph is somewhat interesting, I just hope it starts to add some story and stops the train going in a generic/unoriginal direction.

Edit: After reading quite a bit of the novel I've dropped this, this becomes a story targeted mostly for otakus with lots of cliches and bad H humor and the MC is rather disgusting to the point I could not longer read anything related to him. If you expect this to take some rational or mature or even consistent road then I suggest just giving it up or read the light novel comment to get an inkling of what's coming, most agree that it went downhill fast. If you don't care for those, just go ahead, maybe the manga manages to polish those really disgusting moment and is better but I doubt it.

Regenerative and protection magic...

Well when I heard about the regenerative and protection magic, I instantly thought immortal tank. But instead we got an absorption abilities with a few limitations. Which is still okay but not as fun or interesting at this point anymore. There are just too many absorption ability manga out there, would be fun to see more variety.

Over all it's an okay story with some emotional plots and twists. Worth a read but don't expect anything amazing or unique, even the artwork is average.

At first i thought it was just another dumb rpg wanna be stuff, but i was wrong. It totally blew my mind when our mc got hammered down real and in the end no matter how pessimistic he become his honest very humane nature became the true hero for the people of this kingdom. The idea itself is cute & very original.

Better Than I Expected. Has Feelings.

I thought this would be a bland copy-paste of the popular summoned-to-a-fantasy-(game?)-world trope.

But I am pleasantly surprised how interesting and enjoyable it actually is.
It surprisingly has more 'feels' than action-heavy. It executes the tired summoned hero trope in a different way, almost fresh, with a non-conventional heroine and increasingly interesting allies.

The Shield Hero is more of a practical hero, whose fighting methods are unconventional (that shield's multi-tool system is fascinating). He's not a fighting expert, nor a strategy expert, but he manages to be as smart as he can be and does with what he has to survive. He tends to deal with the the irresponsible mess the other better-treated heroes left behind, and naturally he never gets any credit. I like how he's sort of fatherly towards his 'daughters', and how they care for him back (much feels; I love it).

This sort of story tend to be viewed as 'wish fulfillment' - Personally I avoid such works, but this series does not give me that 'wish fulfillment' nor pretentious feeling; the Shield Hero is not strong from the start, in fact he was unfairly shunned by everyone, thought of as being useless, betrayed, framed, he had everything and everyone going against him - you really feel his suffering - so it gets kinda dark and gloomy at first (but never too far, and not for too long before it gets better).

It explores some of the rarely-touched upon issues of such a situation (summoned hero trope, fantasy land adventure) which is interesting. Though a bit more sophistication would benefit it greatly.
I agree with Kikataru that this series has elements of allegories of real society, such as the twisting of the truth, defamation, lies, deceit, the imperfection behind all that glory and 'perfection', ignorance.etc.
However, despite all that, there a lot of good feels especially later on when things start to go for the better for the Shield Hero.

The art is quite nice, very friendly to the eyes, and the overall story is 'reader-friendly'.

I don't even understand how this is so good...

After only reading the first few chapters I was hooked on this manga.

The Fantasy genre has always been my favorite, but I've never gotten into any of the 'summoned-to-another-world' types. But in this one... I've enjoyed every step (as painful as the monthly releases are). I would highly recommend this to anyone I know that has a taste for manga. And for those who don't, go read the light novel. I personally am not a fan of reading light novels online, but the few that I've read that I managed to get physical copies of I really like. It's just a different feel holding the book in your hands.

Anyways, this manga reminded of some of my favorite settings for fantasy, such as when the MC has hit the utter rock bottom that she/he almost loses them self in it, but then they find that one thing (or some times it finds them) that rekindles their faith that there is good in the world amongst all the bad.

first impressions of The Rising of the Shield Hero

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
When I first read manga I was mad when read both ch 1,2 and I really hate the king and draughter and three heroes and don?t get me start on spear hero but want get better understanding of why is so good I start read Light Novel first Volume and it?s really good and here?s why

The story start were this four boys summoned to another world to become one of the four heroes stop this great evil that was attacking people. so here we have mc who?s Shield Hero who got along with other three hero?s but when others talk and word came about if anyone play rpg games Naofumi never played rpg games before so someone over hears that spread rumours about him when time pair up no one join his side which made him mad tell ?if you have problem say it? but Mein Sophia decided join him help and king give more money to Naofumi when off to learn more about his Shield with help of Mein Sophia but on third day Naofumi was betrayed, falsely accused, and robbed said teammate. Shunned by everyone from king to peasants, Naofumi thoughts were filled with nothing but vengeance and hatred. First thoughts was god feel sorry for this guys all by himself unable to use attack all alone no one to trust I was mad as hell about it really does have dark story to this but let?s keep going.
So we found mc Naofumi using low level equipment and training lv up but he can only fight low lv monster so his pissed off he can?t fight demon because of his Shield be a slave selling man offer him deal to sell him lv 75 demi human but he refused he wanted something cheap and it?s not broken so he found Raphtalia raccoon demi human most important for him in Melrormarc the manga cut few good parts about Raphtalia changing form 1st form to 2nd and bounding between Naofumi and Raphtalia and him telling about his passed. My thoughts were it was really cool to see two bound help each other it was really nice to see not lot anime do that anymore like build the relationships slow not from what I know.

Finally battle between Shield hero and spear hero when read Light Novel I was really hoping that Naofumi kick shit spear hero but of course the bitch A.K.A Mein Sophia use her fire spell fuck over Naofumi making him lose match tell everyone Mein Sophia she using spell help out spear but know believe him because she none other draughter of king his was loss for words and slave spell was getting removed spear hero run over Raphtalia only to get slap suck on that petty boy punk move on spear hero dumbfounded look on his face after being hit Raphtalia telling spear hero that Naofumi has never done anything bad to her this were cry little so here listen Raphtalia ran over to me.

"S-stay away!"

This... is hell.
A maliciously created world.
Women - no - everyone in this world scorns me as if to torture me.
If she touches me, then I'll just be reliving those bad memories.
Raphtalia witnesses my condition and again glared at Motoyasu.

"I've heard the rumors... that Naofumi-sama forced himself onto his companion, that he is an awful Hero."
"A-Ah. He's a rapist! As a female slave, you should understand that, right!?"
"Why would I!? Naofumi-sama has never once laid his hands on me!"

Raphtalia then grabbed my hand.

"L-let go!"
"Naofumi-sama... How can I earn your trust?"
"Let go of my hand!"

Everyone in this world accuses me of a crime I didn't commit.

"I didn't do it!"

Pompf...

Something covered my frienzied self.

"Please calm yourself Naofumi-sama. Please hear me out and give me a chance to earn your trust."

"...Eh?!"

"...Or is it that you cannot trust anyone but a slave who can never disobey nor betray you? In that case please let's go to that place where we first met. So you can put a new curse on me. "

"Y-you're lying!... This is another trick to deceive me!"

What was that!? Who?! This voice... these words... how come they managed to force their way into my heart?

"No matter what happens, I will always believe in you, Naofumi-sama"

"Shut up! You people are just going to pin more crimes on me!"

"...I don't believe those rumors. You are a person who would never do such a thing."

Ever since I arrived in this world, it was the first time... that I had heard the words I have been wishing for.

Slowly the darkness that obscured my vision cleared out.
And I could feel the warmth of another person.

"Even if the whole world unites to blame you, Naofumi-sama. I will not... No matter how many time it takes, I will tell them all: Naofumi-sama did not do it."

When I lifted my head, what laid in front of me was not a little girl, but a young woman around the age of seventeen.
While her features looked like those of Raphtalia, she was an unbelievably cute girl.
What should have been dry, cracked skin was now a healthy complexion, with beautiful hair that was slightly dusty in color.
The body that was once all skin and bones was now curvy with a fit, robust figure.
Most prominently, her eyes were no longer filled with hopelessness, but brimmed with a strong will.
I could not recognize a girl like her.

"Naofumi-sama, now let's go and place the curse on me again."
"W-who are you?"
"Eh? What are you saying? It's me, Raphtalia."
"No-no-no, isn't Raphtalia a little girl?"

She claimed to be Raphtalia. Troubled, she tilted her head while trying to convince me.

"Geez, Naofumi-sama is always treating me like a child."

That voice... is definitely the voice of the Raphtalia I remember.
However, her body was completely different.
No-no-no, this is strange even if she was Raphtalia.

"Naofumi-sama, I'll say this due to the circumstances."
"What?"
"When young Demi-humans raise their level, their bodies also mature quickly in order to match their level growth."
"Eh?"
"Demi-humans are not like humans. It is the same with monsters."

Embarrassed, the girl who claimed to be Raphtalia continued.

"Although my... my mind is still that of a child, my body has already become similar to an adult."

While telling me this, Raphtalia once again buried my head into her voluptuous chest.

"Please believe me. I believe that Naofumi-sama has not committed any crimes. You are the great Shield Hero who has saved my life, given me precious medicine, taught me how to survive and how to fight. I am your sword, and I will follow you no matter what hardships we may face."

Those were... the words that I wanted to hear.
The words spoken ever since Raphtalia swore to fight alongside me.

"If you don't believe me, then make me your slave or do whatever you wish with me. I will always stay with you."
"Ku...u....uu...."

From the first kind words that I received since arriving in this world, I unwittingly began to weep.
Although I felt that I shouldn't cry no matter what, I couldn't stop the tears from falling.

"Uuu..... uuuuuuuuu..."
(;_ ;) I cry there what i got from that was mother hug feel form that.

so to guys do read light novel i it's really good down side for manga is they didn't really cover lot in light novel if they follow light novel i thing give it 5 out of 5 but here how i score
