I really enjoyed reading Nonono. I love the strong female lead in the manga and how all the character's are so colorful and different. The plot itself is full of suspense and excitement. Most importantly, though, it makes ski jumping look super cool and fun! Nononono could've been a perfect sports manga, if it weren't for a few irritating things. I earnestly want to recommend this manga, but before I do, I have to rant about some of my complaints.

First of all, I am definitely not a fan of ecchi comics and I just have to say, this manga is the perfect example of a manga that fails because of stupid fan service. It's just not necessary and ruins all the nice scenes! I don't hate smut but there's specific types of manga where it belongs and none of that pervy stuff belongs in a sports manga like Nononono. What was with those huge ass boobs, perverted comments, and stripping naked all the time? And what the HELL is with the rapist teacher! Man, the fan service just ****ed up a perfectly good manga.
Lastly, the ending was just too RUSHED!! I expected the manga to go on and elaborate on how Nonomiya got to the Olympics and how she obtained the medal. All we get is a stupid time skip and what a chapter's worth of epilogue. Plus, what's with all the loose ends? What happened to the rapist teacher getting revenge after getting out of prison? What happened to Negita and his friends after the InterHigh? Bah. I'm disgusted.

Anyways, that was just my rant. Overall, I'm pretty happy I found another good sports manga. 🙂 Please, go on and read Nononono. Don't be put off by the art because you'll get used to it and actually start enjoying after a while (eh, actually, the fan service is annoying until the end).

...the ending wasn't rushed! may contain some spoilers I love most aspects of this story otherwise, including but not limited to, gender bending, unrequited love, prodigy-like skills, ryoma echizen-like cockiness at times, false shoujo-ai and tragic past. This made up for the bad points; in my case, like the attempted rape, the long period it took for the main character to start winning again, and inconclusive ending. Other wise, it was one of my favorite gender benders/sport mangas! I'd like everyone to remember, though, that the situations she ends up in are mostly because of her determination to get into the Olympics. Like the attempted rape...it really shows how bad she wanted to go enough to let him (almost) do that to her. So don't say it was pointless, because I'm pretty sure it was used to show how much she was determined to go to the Olympics.

It was fun to read it first, but then it turned into something stupid along the way. The female lead was supposed to be strong but while the story went on and on, she only gets abused and she doesn't do anything to help herself =/ without that element, the manga would have been a very enjoyable read -

i must say i dont like sports mangas related with romance cuz the romance is almost non existent but this 1 is actually alot better and honestly the main char actually pays attention to the romance which is refreshing for a change and it actually has a realistic feel to it. Im up to ch 82 and lemme tell u this manga doesnt disappoint give it a shot 🙂

@lamansonbleue (and no she didn't want to be raped) it's not consensual thats why we call it rape -.-' and your friend probably doesnt show her true emotion because, well, she doesnt trust you. 🙂

As a sports manga, Nononono (even with the strange name) delivers, but otherwise... it's really just kinda creepy. What was with all those random rape/molestation/etc scenes? They felt really jarring to the flow of the story, which was shaping up to be a pretty good one, and I can't quite get over how Nono just kind of shrugs it off. And if you add that to her past, all the crap she's been put through should have been unbearably traumatic, but fortunately the manga does do a better job of dealing with the past issue. Still, I'm not sure how she's even continuing on at the moment.

Edit:

I realize I've only read till chpt 87. And it is doing good. Seeing it has 4 volume left, I am kind of worried it will have not really good ending. -__- But I hope it's wrong. :)

Great sport manga

It's long time that I couldn't find a sport manga that can suck me in like that. It brings me a new vision, not only informs me a sport that I rarely pay attention to ,but the fact that the main char is a girl in disguise in a boy and even possesses such huge talent really got me hook.
Her story is a great tragedy,which made me touched a lot. And I love how the mangaka built up a good background story for every talent contestant in the InterHigh. They all have a reason to win at all cost, thus make the characters deeper.
Too bad, it has rush ending and left some plot twists unsolved. But ok, I still love the series, it brought me a lot of thought and emotion.

A pleasant surprise

I usually don't like sports mangas. Sometimes they are boring and there's even been a few I found where the author obviously doesn't know the sport very well. I've only found a few gender-benders that are really worth reading, most recycle the same ideas and jokes and gets kind of boring. So Nononono for me is a pleasant surprise.

The author does a great job of making ski jumping exciting and interesting. The story has good drama and adversity. Yes, there are a few unrealistic even downright silly parts but if you are not too picky its forgivable. Its tough to juggle so many genre categories: Sport, drama, gender-bender, romance, etc., and I think the author for the most part has done a decent job of blending them without making a mess.

The art is ok in some places in others its downright hilarious and great (those closeups of the emperor's face).

I'm up to chapter 70 and all in all I'm really enjoying this series.

Ok, it seems that the manga maybe wasn't doing so well and they started then to get a bit heavy handed with the fan service to try to boost sales, which was a shame because I thought it was a good story and didn't need the extra boobie shots. People keep bringing up Elfen Lied which is the mangaka's other in/famous work. Let me say that the comparison is not correct as this is nothing like the gore feast and madness of Elfen Lied. However, Nononono has always been a seinen and mature work even with all the challenges and inspiring stuff going on. The attempted rape was in line with that crazy character, but I thought it was too detailed and fan-servicy. It then does get some weird characters thrown in at one of the tournaments to either spice things up or because the author was stretching for ideas. Finally this manga was axed so we got an incomplete ending with many plot threads left dangling. All of this detracts from the pretty good first half of the manga. Its still one of my favorite manga but I'm going to have to drop it from the 10 I gave it originally to 8.

*At first I thought this manga was going to be great. There's an amazing heroine, (no, not the drug as good as it seems), that breaks the boundaries in the sports world for womens' ski jumping and man obstacles that get in the way to that success. THEN, as I kept reading the manga, things started getting out of hand. The manga turned off the road from a realistic approach to the gender discrimination in sports to perverted nonsense, unrealistic injuries, and oversized breasts. At least make them a decent size so we understand how Nono is even able to hide a bit of her identity. All I can say is, if you're not looking for an over-the-top manga, then don't read this... The rest of you enjoy. (; *
