This manga is so 'Epic' that I feel bad if I don't leave a review on how EPIC this manga is. The romance is nothing I've ever read before. It's the plot and the dynamics between the characters that make this manga stands out from the 'mainstream shoujo'.

An advice to first time readers who aren't familiar with Tamura Yumi's works, don't let the 'old school shoujo art' clouds your judgement and skip the first volume. I got the same impression when I first read this manga, thankfully, I kept on reading until the scene where...

..The Red King is actually Shuri, the guy that Sarasa met at the hotspring

Then I realized, things will get heated up since the whole plot revolves around the 'Enemies become Lovers' and 'Secret Identity' trope, it's amazing how Tamura sensei managed to keep things interesting for 27 volumes!

The ending is probably the most satisfying ending I've ever read..all the knots are tied, the mangaka even covered stories about the side characters. Amazing. Applauds

Thank you Tamura Yumi for creating such a masterpiece....actually, I can't thank you enough, your mangas have brought so much happiness to me!! throws out random fangirl rantyes! She is my manga idol! For those who enjoyed reading Basara, be sure not to miss reading her on-going manga 7 seeds. It's as Epic as Basara but, BETTER.

Maybe calling it a surprise might be a bit much considering that this is one of the most popular manga ever but it STILL took me by surprise

This was recommended to me by my sister and I recommend it to everyone else. Good and believable characters, compelling plot, believable romance, etc. Easily one of my favorite manga to date.

This manga is amazing.. it has its flaw likes the chick with black hair who was in love in w/ Shuri (she got annoying..) and the fact that Sarasa becomes physically weak (a lot of time but not all the times) wh3n she is with shuri. But those are minors things that I could overlooked. This manga is amazing.. itslike tokyo crazy paradise or red river.. this is not ur typical shoujo and if u judge a book based on its art (the reason for y I didnt read it for 3 yrs) then u will nvr find these kindnof gems...

BEST manga I've ever read. I loved it so much. I still do. I'm constantly trying to find a manga like this but can't seem to find one as good, but I think Red River was alright but definitely not as good.
The plot was great, the type I love most. (Where they are rivals but fell in love with each other)
I love the characters. Both Sarasa and Shuri were strong, like seriously strong and that's what I love in main characters. Physically and emotionally strong. I loved their cute interactions when they didn't know who each other was. I loved how Shuri was very cold towards other people but treated her so specially.
The ending was satisfying enough for me, at least it was better than the ending in Red River.
I'm planning to reread this series in the school holidays~~
This series definitely deserves a 10!

Though it is SO flawed and the romance is so naive Basara is one of the best SHOJO mangas i have ever read. It is so unlike all that crap that's out today that you have to love it, even though it was made in 1991. The characters are real and it made me cry so many times when i thought some of the characters were going to die, i felt bad for the romance though it was undeveloped and too soon.
Sure the main character cries a lot but put in the situation she is i can see why, the drawings may not be the best but the story is amazing.
Please give it a chance, i don't think its boring maybe you won't either.

I never write reviews because I'm too lazy but I just can't help writing a review for Basara. I sincerely regret putting off this manga for so long just because it doesn't have good art. The story flows beautifully and it has a lot of detail. Basara has some great character development as well. Even the art seems beautiful when you get into it. It's got everything you could hope for and more, much more. Two weeks after reading this manga, I still can't stop coming back to reread it. This is really the BEST shoujo manga I have ever read - if you can call it shoujo (it's not the typical superficial boy meets girl, fall in love, kind of shoujo that you forget all about in two seconds). Instead of scrolling down and reading all the comments, start reading this manga. Basara is definitely worth your time. When I started reading, I kind of dreaded it because it was 27 volumes long, but once I started, I couldn't stop reading! I stayed up the whole night, finishing the series in one sitting, and I still want more. Please read this manga, or you'll be missing out on one of the best classics ever. It's better than Naruto, Bleach, Skip Beat, Dengeki Daisy, Vampire Knight, and all those other popular titles put together.

Wow, I can't believe I wrote this review 13 years ago. This manga left such a good impression on me I still remembered it after all this time. I reread it and I see many more flaws now, not as biased anymore lol but it was still an incredible story. Not many manga like to explore various themes in such detail. This one definitely needs a mature audience that's willing to put in the effort to understand it. It's well worth your time.

I've had Basara on my to read list for a long time, and finally got to read it these last few days. I just finished, and I've got chills up and down my arms because that was the sort of reading experience that I swear to you comes only a few times in a lifetime. I'd read some of Yumi Tamura's shorter works, but they do not fully showcase what a master storyteller she really is. There is so much here to offer a reader, whether you want a complex story, fully realized characters, or a unique world.

My life probably won't change after this. I won't be a better person for it. In a few days this "euphoric" feeling will fade. But right now, I feel pretty damn good to be alive.

I absolutely love it, the plot is intriguing, the characters lovable and almost seem like you met them in real life, the world of Basara is a genius of imagination. Development is not rushed, but it never lags. Maybe I'm biased because my favourite character got a lot of spotlight time ^^. Will make you think, will make you feel, will make you sad and happy. Art was a bit...old-fashioned at first, but got used to it before the first chapter ended. In fact, each character is drawn uniquely so you can recognize everyone, and the guys actually do look like guys, which I really like. Will make you think about life and appreciate it more. It's amazing...go read it! =)

This story made me cry, made me laugh, made me wanna feel part of it. All I can say is that there are no words to describe how much I love this manga and how much I'm going to miss it now I finished it.
