Description

Eri Yukizaki is a girl locked in battle with a chainsaw-wielding incantation of true evil. But, like the demons that boil inside her heart, the 'Chainsaw Man' doesn't seem to die, no matter how much she stabs him. As she fights, a young man, Yamamoto, watches love-struck, wishing he could be more than just her useless bicycle courier.

This is a really well-written short story that effortlessly made it onto my "required reading" list. It's quite the roller coaster as far as story elements go, but when all is said and done, it's an amazing story about finding purpose and meaning in life. Even if you don't care to read something deep or meaningful, this title doesn't fail to deliver on action, comedy and even a bit of romance.

I don't give out many 10s, but this was awesome.

Seriously, I had loved this. This could have gone for 8 volumes and I would have loved each and every chapter released.

Except, for some magical reason, the serialization ended in two volumes. Which was horrendous by the way. One thing I could say is that the final chapter was definitely rushed. Maybe not, but if it wasn't, then I would say this is 87.5% awesome (first 7 chaps) and 12.5% crap.

It's difficult to criticize something I had liked, but the ending leaves a lot of loose ends that it ain't even funny. The nicest description would be "Everything ends conveniently." But seriously, the plot just goes poof and the enemy's motive unexplained.

Damn, it's just plain sad when all that character development and tension just disappears in front of you while reading the closing scenes of some manga you had dug.

Kevadu basically hit the nail on the head. It does remind me of FLCL a lot in that it's not heavy-handed in it's presentation. And it does involve a lot of comedy and seems satirical at times but it is NOT a gag manga.

If you're looking for a hack/slash, shonen style sailor moon where you can check your brain at the door then I suggest you move on b/c this doesn't involve any of that; in fact, so far the Chainsaw Man and Eri's battles are only used as a minor plot device in order to tie the 2 main characters together. But what this does offer is more of a slice-of-life character driven story about 2 teens struggling with angst and depression while trying to find a purpose in life.

People may get turned off that Yosuke isn't some super-powered boy-hero, but like I said the battles really aren't shown at all and don't really matter. I like the art style: how characters faces get twisted up in emotion, and Eri is cute and Yosuke's age is actually reflected by his appearance and he doesn't look like an adult.

Overall it's a pretty good read. And I'd recommend it for any fans of FLCL or NHK and people not to into chapters and chapters of mindless violence.

Mmmk...This manga is either really good or just above average, I can't tell.
It's safely good [7/10-ish], as even if you just skim it it's got the epic scaffold of a guy watching a girl who, every night, fights a chainsaw-wielding, black cloaked man, temporarily getting physical superpowers during the fight. (At least I don't think she has them during other times) It's got that kinda cliche, exploitation that everyone loves with a title to match like the idea behind 'Hobo With A Shotgun' <--- It's a HOBO with a SHOTGUN.

Now, the question is, is it great when you look deeper (e.g. Penguindrum) or does it fail horribly in that respect like some amateurish 'deep' stuff out there (e.g. the limbo scene in Harry Potter's 7th book, {Basset fans are scary, so I won't manage that})?

I...have no idea. I think looking a little deeper at least gives it 1 more out of 10. But I didn't really like any of the characters. No, that's wrong. I'm interested in at least the dead friend and the final chapter where the guy (you'll know who when you read it) is talking. But I don't think the characterisation overall was done competently.

Perhaps I want this to be a 10/10 because it's the author of Welcome to the NHK! who managed to make me feel depressed for days after just reading a few chapters from the beginning and end.

Bottom line: Despite whatever makes this good, the characterisation was bad and the romance was bad.

EDIT: Art was pretty great. especially cover art.

I think the live-action version of this could be done really well, depending on how they approach (I'm thinking Kill-Bill-esque) but I don't think I'll bother checking it out 😛

I really liked this series for what it was. I wish they could of had one more chapter though after to just show a little progression in the relationship. Like after its was done they got to comfort each other or something cute. Over all a quick short read that I recommend

well, 7, I guess, plain beginning, plain ending..
besides, I think it is not very deep.. some symbolism is used, but it should not be very rare nowadays I guess..
Some adult contents, 4 pages at most as far as I remembered..
finished reading it in 1 hour, a reread will hopefully be done, but just for the middle and latter half.
the ending is too lustreless.
2 volumes is a good length.. what should be expressed is done, it is OK.

BY THE WAY, WHERE IS THE "Surprise Me!" BUTTON?

first of all the manga was NOT based on the movie
it was based on a novel written by the same author of nhk
and the movie was also based on the novel as well
(btw. movie rocks. theme song "be free" also rocks)
nhce7 is awesome! and the manga is coming to an end.
only 2 volumes ToT i think... maybe 1 or 2 chapters left?

this whole manga, the protagonist try to put up a brave face, always being funny and always wise cracking, but i can feel, threading through his unsaid words his sadness and his grief through his friends' death. to me, the chainsaw man is the specter of depression that both of them need to fight everyday or else consuming them. only by together, can they keep it at bay.

a great read, do please read.

well, i think this manga is amazing! first of there is not a point of cliche, one of the mosts original mangas that I have ever readed(it was based on a movie, though)

well, if U want something new, its veeeeeeeeery recommendated. =D
