it's too good to be true..
i've read lots of drama or tragedy manga yet this story makes me cried (at the same time i have sinusitis) for whole time..

at first i thought this is so lame yet when i continued, i want to help yuu..

I don't know what the people who didn't like this manga were expecting, but I truly believe they missed the whole point of it.
Sure there was romance, sure there was drama, crimes and sorrow but this was not the point of the story!
The point was that the two protagonists had shut themselves in because they had been hurt by everyone around them and by life in general. They didn't want to open to others because they felt they would only show hypocrit pity or disgust, without truly wanting to get to know them. They wanted to die because they thought their mere presence on earth was source of sorrow for others. They thought life had no meaning and they never felt emotions like happiness or love.
Then they finally find someone who doesn't show pity who understands without judging and that needs them.
This is the whole point: they find someone who wants them to live! Someone who cares for their existence in a true sincere way. They don't see a criminal and a rich girl, they see the person beyond those definitions.
And the ending is deeply sad but invigorating: he wants her to live, he gives her the strength to break with her past and go on with her life. And she shows him emotions, something he had shut himself off from, he has come to terms with dying a long time ago but now for the first time he cherishes his life and life in general. It is a gift that even if for a short time has allowed him to "live" instead of being a walking-dead. He got to know love and happiness at the end of a life of sorrow.

If you didn't get this then you didn't look deep enough. Or maybe you want everything to be spelled out clearly because you never reflect on what you see.

Some of you kept seeing stereotypes "the criminal", "the rich girl with a dark past". You are doing the same mistake of the people in the manga. You are not going beyond these definitions. Was the criminal a cruel serial killer who enjoyed killing? No. He was a good man who had tried to care for others and give them a better life but was scarred by life and the really cruel person who had paid for the second child to be killed. I'm not saying he's not a criminal anymore, but that beyond a criminal's face there is a person that doesn't necessarily have to be a demon.
You should look deeper otherwise you remain a shallow person yourself.

No manga has ever made me cry, but this is the ONLY exception.

I have to disagree with some comments before mine, because I am a big fan of Sumomo/Sahara Mizu's artwork. It has a unique simplicity that shows very raw emotion, and i think she developed the characters very well. Some people think it's cheesy, but you really have to look at the meaning and plot without thinking about the other sappy shoujo manga that've probably corrupted your mind.

Very touching, very tragic, very hopeful. i loved it.

Truly one of the most mediocre manga I have ever read. Everything except the art, which was very pretty but did not fit in with the tone of the story, was at may average.

Romance was rushed, underdeveloped and slightly unbelievable. Story was just bascally the romance between the characters. Characters were given traumatic cliche backstories, it was like you were forced to feel sorry for them. They weren't well developed, didn't have good mtives for their actions, and hard to sympathize with. They were very cliche which distracted me from really getting into the story.

And before I knew it, it was over. Very anticlinatic ending and I felt unsatisfied.
Another negative point would be that you can not only predict exactly the way the story will end, but also what will happen in the story. Don't agree with me? Then you haven't seen enough manga/anime/books/movies to know how to spot a predictable story.

EDIT: I can only sit back and chuckle at the extremely narrow-minded people above, who claim that a person is stupid or shallow for not liking this manga or the characters. Also, you can
understand it and dislike it at the same time. Saying a person does not look deep enough or wants it all spelt out for them...you're really getting heated about a 1 volume comic book. Learn to respect other's opinions.

May I add that this story has already been adapted into a movie? Just look at "Maundy Thursday", it has been released on 2006.
The ending is the same as I expected, and even though I knew it right from the start, I ended up crying a little. The artwork is well, okay, especially the anterior view of the characters (but not the side profile - those were a little bit shabby...)

I don't like the fact that the piano tutor hasn't been punished.

Why the average rating is 9?
The characters are not well developed. And the art is not such a beautiful one that can let the readers feel the mood of the story. The ending should have been a climax of the whole story, but personally, I do not find it well delivered.

...and in the case of this manga, I make no exception.

Sure, it's better than 99% of the romance manga out there, but that doesn't make it a 'masterpiece' by any means. I'm with yumemiru and VampireBanana on this one. The manga starts out looking very promising; but in the end, it's just another overly-dramatic story with utterly contrived plotting, where they go on and on about how the law is always wrong, and how 'innocents are being convicted based only on initial appearances and unfortunate circumstances'.
Certainly, the law has made mistakes plenty of times, and there are more criminals outside prisons than in, but that doesn't mean the death penalty should be abolished!

I guess this manga is good for people who are under the impression that 'love makes the world go round'.
Unfortunately (or not) I don't believe depression, suicidal tendencies and murderous desires can be cured just because the affected person has fallen in love.

If that were true, how wonderful! All the criminals in this world just have to meet their 'destined lover', and they will forever walk the path of justice... Someone suffering from depression after being raped, abused and so forth, will be completely cured of their trauma once they find the love-of-their-life 🤣

Personally, I find that too silly to accept. I'm not a believer in the 'love conquers all' concept, and I never will be.

I don't really think you have the right to say that. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. That's what this part of the site is for, right?

the last chapter oh god so sad biut there is joy in there as well. the art fantastic, the plot awesome and the characters touched me. the warden, the girl and the convict. all of them touched me and the girl's growth and her wanting to live. just all of it. just absolutely brilliant. There were so many moments, so many moments where I was thinking oh god no, give them their happiness. The convict and the girl grew so much. Its as if their feelings are being transferred to you. There were so many words spoken that were just beautiful representing their struggles and their sadness that they can't be together. The quote in my subject just damn felt so sad, and sums up a lot of things. The key message is "live, just live your life as much as as you can because its short and precious". sahara mizu is a legend.

@calstine--my apologies i have removed that part, that was immature of me. I guess the romanticists will like this manga more. You are wrong though to assume that people who like this manga think love makes the world go around, love does bring you happiness though so it helps but it cannot conquer everything thats for sure. However in THIS scenario in this manga it helped them get through, moreover for me this manga doesn't say that love conquers all for me it says just live on, that life is worth living. Again there are always other factors needed to change suicidal, depressed people but love can always help, i don't see how it can be detrimental and instead of this manga focusing on all those other factors it just focuses on love because it is something most people will experience in their life and they can relate to it. Anyways again I apologise for that rude comment and I guess this manga will appeal more to romanticists. If you have a negative view of love, you probably won't like this manga.

At first, I thought this was just like any other depressing manga... but as you start to learn the tragic histories behind the main character's pasts...it brought a lot more depth to the story.

I don't want to spoil anything, because you have to experience the emotions this manga brings out yourself.

By the end of the story, you'll be crying, you'll know it was coming, but you'll still feel this ending was right.

There are only a few manga that succeed in putting some feeling inside of your heart.
I mean, maybe movies or books are better ways to make people excited, but man, this manga own 'em all.

I didn't thought it was a lame melodrama like some have stated.
The characters are deep and complex, and it really succeeds in making you feel like they feel.
The feeling you have by it end, is something no manga have made me feel so far.

The only thing I've felt uncomfortable about the manga, is that the time-line is not clear. I couldn't find exactly how much time elapsed in the history, but it's not important to the development, and probably, the story were made to feel like that.

Bro, if you're reading this thing thinking there were any "good guy/bad guy" thing, that there was some redemption at all, I think you're doing it wrong.
The history is about how Yuu and Juri, discovers in each other, that there could have been a place for each on of them in life, that life is something worth of. If you think that it's JUST some tragic love thing, I think you're doing it epically wrong.

Probably, you were not in the mood to read this kind of story.
