Don't understand the popularity !

This review comes right after i finished reading the 3rd volume of this manga. My irritation level grew with every page, until I can no longer take it and I had to vent smile

First, the classic I quit sports that can be found in every manga. Only in here I find it more annoying and childish. Let me just say that there are dozens of professional players that rely on their dominate leg only (for shooting), and are doing just fine the English/ Italian/Spanish Leagues.
Then we have the 'incident' that makes our MC grow some balls, which i will put in spoiler tags, though it is in the beginning chapters so not really a spoiler.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
How can you tell someone who just lost his brother, that he needs to carry his brother's dreams because he got his heart ? I mean really, how f**king selfish is that. Imagine if MC didn't want to become a pro football player (though he did). That would be like forcing him to walk a path in life by saying "you got your brothers heart so you have to what he wanted in life, good luck tehe' . F**k that ! He should just probably slap her and say I am going to become a professional player because That's what I want. The manga tries to make it look like it's something awesome but it's really not.

Oh, I'm not done. The hospital counselor basically manipulates him into playing football again 0_o .
And finally the heart itself. The author tries to explain how some heart transplants change the receiving person and whatnot. The problem with this is that it makes our MC pathetic.
How you say ? like this.
Oh MC couldn't shoot with his left leg, Now he can. It's thanks to his brother's heart.
Oh MC is using his brother's moves to pass players. It's thanks to his brother's heart
etc....
you get the drift
and you don't reach this conclusion yourself, Nooo, the author shows us an image of his brother behind his back every time he does something similar to him.

With that out of the way, I say : it's not a bad sports manga, I just couldn't handle it.
I'm just writing this review here to present a different front from all the positive reviews in here that led me to reading this manga.

Pros:
- more realistic than other sports manga
- female lead plays competitively and isn't an annoying sideshow. She's freaking awesome.
- awesome (or morally conflicting) backstory

Cons:
- The characters feel really flat to me, even after 100 chapters. I don't really get emotional in the "we need to win this!!!!" moments like I typically do in sports manga. Sadly, character hardships and development are what keep me into sports manga, so this was a big minus for me.

entertaining football manga -- i'm quite a football maniac so i was curious about it. the plot is cliched with the characters having god like skills that i find doubtful, but i can't help but continue reading it. the mangaka has a skill in moving the plot along though and keeping the reader sucked into the story and the characters. you really root for them smile i'm enjoying it so far.

I started reading this manga because it lloked interesting, but:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I agree with previous comments that it's irritating that someone imposes this huge burdens and dreams on somebody else "for the sake of the one who died", I mean, who are they to decide upon this.
But mangawise I think the author lacks the ability to set the atmosphere for dramatic scenes and they just get over the dead of the brother so easily.... I just don't buy and overall is toooo predictable.

I'll keep on reading for now, but if it dissapoints me once more I'm afraid I'll have to drop it...
But don't trust me, read for yourself... HAHAHAHA

This manga I fine really captivating to read but pisses me off at the same time. I like how they portray Kakeru who is talented but overshadowed by his brother and other events that take place before the start of the manga. Though I think that he should get that councilor fired for her actions.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
The summary is misleading. I thought it was some kind of romantic comedy with soccer as a background plot. So i didnt read it earlier. I finally broke down and read it after it was recommended to me. Without spoiling too much this is an enamoring manga that follows Kakeru's attempt to get to the international stage in honor of his brother Suguru who dies in a tragic accident.

I dont know that much about soccer, but this is surely one manga ill be following.

Surprisingly Entertaining

Most who know me will recognize quite well that I'm not, shall we say, enamored of the typical shounen fanfare, be it sports, harem, action, or otherwise. However, Area no Kishi is quite good, despite containing many of these traditional elements, so this is just another example of the incorrectness of absolutes.

What makes this manga succeed isn't its exceedingly normal cast, unremarkably average art, or even the character development, which is slightly above average, but the way the story is told. The author may not have a flare for realism, but he certainly has a strong grasp of what it means to lay plans for a story that is quite detailed in its scope. I get the impression that the storyline is actually designed significantly in advance while still leaving the author some wriggle room, which is always a good thing.

This is one I'll keep my eye on, although there's no telling if I'll lose interest in the later volumes.

Really, really good

If you're looking for a shounen sports manga, look no further. This is one you have to read.

Like the similar "underdog" plot in sports manga, you have Kakeru who's not that amazing at soccer. But similarly it's pleasant reading about his accomplishments in those areas.

The supporting characters are also really well thought out and likable. Like someone said before, the main girl character (there's always that one...) is actually really cool. She's not annoying in the least, and can kick butt in soccer too. Really a win-win situation if you ask me.

Oh and one of my all time favorite characters of all is Suguru, Kakeru's older brother. The relationship between the two of them is perhaps one of the darkest things in this series. And one of my favorite things to read about.

I won't say anymore, for risk of spoiling anything.

Just read it! ^^

In the beginning it was an average sports manga with good art and ok story line. But as character developes the manga just sucks you in. It became the manga i look forward to most every week. Even though the characters are exaggerated and becomes "godly", i don't think it affects the story line much.
