Description
From Yen Press:
A sweet "aww"-inspiring tale of school life begins. At school, Kyouko Hori is known for being smart, attractive, and popular. On the other hand, her classmate, the boring, gloomy Izumi Miyamura tends to get painted as a "loser fanboy." But when a liberally pierced and tattooed (not to mention downright gorgeous) Miyamura appears unexpectedly on the doorstep of secretly plain-Jane homebody Hori, these two similarly dissimilar teenagers discover that there are multiple sides to every story and person.

I used to read Horimiya, I think up until Miyamura cut his hair or they started dating? And I never read it again until it's announced that Horimiya is close to ending.

I genuinely enjoyed the manga the first time I read it. Hori and Miyamura as characters are interesting; they're polar opposites but they find each other comforting. Hori was such a hardworking girl, popular and smart but also handles all housework by herself, while Miyamura was isolated and had trust issues. I liked seeing both of them grow as people and in their relationship.

Until after they dated... like few chapters in, I started to think that it's getting kind of boring. The jokes are always either Hori being downright abusive and literally everybody else doesn't really think it's a problem (just mild reminder here and there) or Hori being jealous of guys getting near Miyamura for no reason when he never even said he has interest in guys. Setting aside how toxic those jokes are if it actually happens in real life, it just kept getting recycled when honestly it was never funny in the first place.

Hori and Miyamura's characters just... disappeared? Hori is just a monster and Miyamura is just a victim. Not a trace of their characteristics in the early chapters were found, when those were the charm of this manga in the first place. The plot just goes nowhere, it's not funny, their chemistry and characters are reduced to dust.

If the manga ended around Miyamura cutting his hair or Hori and Miyamura started dating, it would have been much, much better. I recommend to read just until that part.

The End... End?

Is really normal to romance stories to get dragged after some point, if you really like the genre you'll see that most of times.
New love rivals, new pairs, new problems for the couple, trips and whatever.
However the most irritating thing that can happen in any story is the same(in my opinion):
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
No close ending!!! WHY?!!! Just why?
Time skip without focus in the main couple? Really?

Maybe the anime got another ending, but I'm tired of this one already to try watch.

I swear I was reading a completely different manga at some point its like we had the 2 mc's find each other grow and develop then we hit a little under half way i think
"Wow there's so much left we're going to get into more stuff and the other characters relationship more awesome i love that!".
Then just nothing .....no real development, literally all filler little teases here and there but nothing happens hell even the extra chapter doesn't give anything. It was like watching goku fight freeza yer its somewhat entertaining but if you don't have anything new can we wrap this up now?

Characters got flanderized big time ;(

Update: wow after the MC's get physical for the first time the manga swings in a completely different direction. The small traits in each character ended up getting repeatedly troped out for comedy, until you can barely recognize the characters you've been reading about anymore. Disappointing. They should've just ended a good thing before it went on long enough to become terrible.

Can I just say that this manga is a shoujo breakthrough for having such unusual main characters? They are both so mature and relatable, with a flair of adorable chemistry and humor.

Like, this is the first time I haven't face-palmed multiple times at a shoujo main character. The author has avoided a lot of the cliches by introducing a lighter atmosphere without the excessive drama usually induced by common shoujo elements such as uncooperative father, whiny/annoying heroine, you get the idea.

EDIT: it turns out this has a "shounen" tag...(It used to have both) but that doesn't change anything. Usual shounen manga I'm used to are all really mainstream... for example... Naruto, One Piece, Fairy Tail, Bakuman, and etc. This is pretty refreshing no matter the genre. :-)

Kudos to the author.

Main story appears to be finished, but for some reason it's still ongoing, with really slow updates. Maybe the editor is to blame, but this can't be doing any good for the author. Probably afraid the next series won't compete, considering this author's previous work left a lot to be desired. This series really went downhill once the male MC cut his hair and stopped wearing his piercings. In a recent chapter, he says there' wasn't really a reason why he had piercings. Really? You got like 10+ piercings with a chain from ear to lip for no reason? Time to drop this one.

I have to agree with some of the other reviews. The manga started out so well, but I honestly feel like it ended when Miyamura cuts his hair -- after that, there's weird ridiculous personality changes and plot inconsistencies.

My biggest gripe is with Hori -- she used to be a great character. Responsible, kind, friendly, caring -- and she turns into this abusive sadistic jealous-nightmare tsundere who's always yelling at Miyamura for no reason? I keep desperately wishing she'd go back to the character she used to be, but on the off chance a chapter IS about Hori/Miya (when they've been on a lot of the side characters lately -- like don't get me wrong, I love fleshed out side characters, but it feels like the main characters have been completely neglected from a manga that is named after them, haha) there's like... nothing that makes me like Hori anymore. The way her character seems to have taken a nosedive is beyond upsetting. There's like nothing likable about her any more, and sweet moments between her and Miyamura are few and far between. And why is she groping girls' chests all of a sudden??! It's like... you never would have seen that from the Hori at the beginning of the manga. It's not funny. It's genuinely just... ugh.

So anyway, my recommendation would be to stop reading the manga when the main couple gets together for the first time, because after that, there's severe character and plot assassination, and both Hori and the romance become unrecognizable. Ugh....

Great beginning and then....filler?

The idea and beginning are great but it somehow started to sidetrack later on. As of now ch. 88 I don't know if I should continue reading this series. The last 20 Chapters felt like there was no content. Only meaningless rabble of everyday life and weird situations. It felt like the story just stopped (without actual ending) and then there comes volumes of extras. Extras as in small sidestorys after the end of some mangas :/ who wants to continue reading this?

I haven't read the original so I don't know how it is going to end but I assume similar to that. That being said the last 10 or so chapters are annoying to me. I love the side characters. I want them to be fleshed out a bit. But I also want the main story, the dynamics between Hori and Miyamura to continue. Right now it feels like things are just being milked(current chapter 88). Fillers are fine, it's still pretty good but as this is a monthly publication, it really makes me as a reader restless.

This is definitely something to pickup but I would probably wait a bit until there is something close to an ending.

EDIT:
Perhaps we all misunderstood? Here's my new theory:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The main story ended with the proposal on Christmas, now there are just small nuances of their everyday life. It is after all a slice of life manga as well. I know there were some small "rivals" and we see the abuse Hori gives to Miyamura but if you have been in a relationship we could possibly see this as an extreme form of flirting/banter... a really really extreme form, and taking in their personalities it kinda fits. The rivals are like half a chapter and of no real consequence I am now seeing it more as just for the lawls really. That said if my theory is correct, this makes for a really long omake. Either way I am still looking hopelessly for some other form of conclusion for Hori and Miyamura.

A manga worth reading

I agree with previous reviews that this manga may be going downhill or that these mini chapters are getting really annoying. Maybe it's all in preparation for some grand ending or something, I don't know. However, I decided to reread the manga from the beginning up to where it was and I cried so many times. The relationships and they way the story is played out is simply beautiful. This manga does such a good job portraying all the personalities and feelings of each character that it takes my breath away. The mangaka does a truly wonderful job in tying in all the characters' stories and relationships along with everyday problems and comedy. I love how during the serious moments of Horimiya, you can sense it amongst the characters' expressions and body language (i.e when souta found out they had sex or when miyamura proposes on the snowy day) and the art depicts it so amazingly well. These chapters reminded me exactly why everyone is so drawn to this manga in the first place. I hope that the mangaka will be able to return to depicting our favorite couple the way he always has been and this manga will go down in history with its previous glory.

Going downhill?

The first part of this manga was pure genius. The relationships, interactions, all of it. They felt so natural, so realistic. I liked the jokes, and the way the characters live their lives, but...
Then the story started to go downhill from there. In the beginning, it was a story about a girl who doesn't want people to know how she is outside of school, and that she needs to take care of her brother, because her parents are always working, but the thing is....After her parents got introduced, they never disappeared. What happened to their work? Wasn't she supposed to be taking care of her brother?
Also, as the story goes on, she becomes too violent and crazy....And abusive, which is played as jokes.
I love Miyamura, and his story, and I think the author did a good job in staying true to his story, but for Hori, it looks like all of her character description is thrown out of the window to be replaced with an abusive, violent and crazy girl. She wasn't like this in the beginning.
The side characters' stories are so good, though, but I think the story kinda lost its magic.
