For one thing, though, I'm usually the biggest critique when it comes to high school romances (I really like slice-of-life though, so if anyone pulls that off well in theirs, I'm all there). For another, I really have a favoured tendency towards male characters with short-hair.
When I started reading this, it was because I wanted something that wasn't stereotypical shoujo-esque. I read using mangapark so y'know, what gives, right? It was filed under Josei (which I rather like because it's a bit more realistic in terms of relationship expectations), so i thought why not. (Edit: I see here that it's listed as shounen on mangaupdates, which really explains a lot about why it isn't just overbearing romance as far as the eye can see, "you're the only one for me"-esque drama llamas) I was surprised and thrilled by what I got--I thought, okay, well, even if the male lead's design isn't my thing, I guess I'll give it a shot.
Imagine my surprise--this manga's really, really cute and sweet. Not overbearingly so, but in the just-right increments for me. I love the development of their relationship before they start really developing feelings (i think it begins roughly around chapter 14)--I love slow romances. With female leads that usually take care of the home, I expected some really obnoxious siblingship sacrificing, or just being a doormat. Nope, but ehh. Miyamura's personality seems to develop into a sardonic one in the later chapters once we learn about the fact that he actually has friends (not bad, but idk, I felt it could've been better developed).
Anyway, I really liked tons of elements to it. However, in the earlier chapters, it follows a weird shoujo-trap cliche of setting up for common themes: like, "oh no, my best friend is interested in the guy I like", or, "I just wanna be able to have fun with other people, but I can't because I have to look after my family first"--but it never gets addressed or it really never feels like a huge thing? (The second one isn't even spoiler because we're introduced to that from chapter one, and she seems to be doing fine, like taking care of her brother isn't really hurting her in anyway 😕 However,
when she gets sick, we get this exposition of her and just being like 'naw mama you go to work i'm not a kid anymore it's okay!' when she was sick as a child--and while it's an inherent part of how she became what she is, I feel like that's not solid enough for me (maybe I have different expectations, who knows).
Anyway, a not bad manga--I really think positively of it, and I'm looking forward to a lot of foreshadowed character get-togethering
(I'm looking at you, Toru, Sakura--those two are such cuties I'm just ripping my face in half every time I think about it)
, its balance on friendships the characters have (it could be stronger, but considering how manga usually portrays it or fails to, I'm always grasping for it), and I really like what kindness this manga does to its secondary characters (Hori's parents, etc). I'm looking forward to the ride. Peace!
