While watching/reading Gosick, it occurred to me that I couldn't think of any other examples of series where an Asian (likely Japanese) male protagonist is in love with a non-Asian female romantic interest. I searched the forum and went through tags, and found plenty of series where the primary romance is between a Japanese female and non-Asian (usually European) male, but for the opposite pairing I found nothing apart from the single title I mentioned above.

This is despite the fact that most half-Japanese characters in anime/manga have Japanese surnames, which implies a Japanese father and foreign mother. So it strikes me as strange that I can't find more romances with this sort of pairing, unless someone here can suggest some which I haven't found yet. I wonder if there are any particular cultural reasons for this imbalance?

Venus Kisoukyoku I can only think of this at the moment. Mom is European if I'm not mistaken. I think it's due to cultural thing as well when you expect the wife to follow the husband and not the other way around.

Venus Kisoukyoku is like most stories with half-Japanese characters in that they have a Japanese father and foreign mother, but that is always only mentioned in passing as part of a character backstory. So I don't understand why there are no actual manga about how those relationships came to be. Expecting the wife to follow the husband is an old idea in most cultures, not only Japan.

Infinite Stratos. It's really crappy IMO though. 😐

Hanasakeru Seishounen also fits. There is an anime of it.

zen martial arts academy

try any harem manga, they'll often include a non-asian. The non-asian is NEVER the "fated match" though...

Exactly, that's why I wrote in the OP I wanted to find titles where there is actual love/romance. So I'm really not interested in any harem manga.

Hanasakeru Seishounen doesn't really count since the female protagonist is half-Japanese. My impression is that normally a foreign female character must have some Asian (and maybe specifically Japanese in the case of manga?) ancestry to be acceptable as a love interest of a Japanese character. If a female non-Japanese is included in a harem or shows some interest in the male MC, she's usually there for comic relief and embodies stereotypes of foreigners' promiscuity and coarseness.

I guess to clarify what I'm looking for is whether or not there are any other serious romances along the lines of Gosick, where there is a female protagonist, not of Japanese descent, who is written to behave in a human, non-stereotypical way and be in mutual love with a Japanese or other Asian male MC. Maybe the number of such works, if they do exist at all, is only in the single digits?

I forgot the name of the series. But it's basically about humans who can change into animals and they fight. It's a short series and it was completely scanlated few months ago.
There's a French girl that changes into a Wolf and an Asian boy saves her when she's running from a "Lion". The boy is a Tiger and he has a younger sister that is not-awakened-yet Tiger as well.
I can't say that it's really about love, but the ending (after defeating the big bad Lion) sort of looks like they end up together.

Also if a fated match with non-asian girl ---ending with a wedding - there's a series where the sub-characters, to be said he is the main heroine's brother, end like that. It's W Juliet and the wedding is in first chapter of W Juliet II.

Joousama no Shirousagi Also, this one's not yet scanlated completely, but I know who is going to complete it, and is basically about Asian boy who encounters an alien planet's princess who makes him hers white rabbit familiar?

But the male lead isn't a Japanese character

he's Singapore Chinese so it doesn't matter whether she's acceptable as a love interest because of her Japanese half as you said.

I think the anime Macross Frontier can fit. Although hey have already moved to the outer space, I think the male lead is clearly Japanese and the female lead is a European/white/ descendant.

What I know:
Do supernatural entities count? Like Saber from Fate/Stay Night and Irisviel from Fate Zero or Index from To Aru Majutsu no Kinsho Mokuroku (Novel)?

In terms of human relationships the closest I can think of is the relationship between Tenma and Eva in Monster but it doesn't last long and it's not the main point of the story.

I dunno if it's due to the high traditionalism of Japan, but it's definitely a rare scenario.

What I don't know:
according to tvtropes in Itazura na Kiss the Englishwoman Christine "Chris" Robbins has a thing for Japanese men and go to Japan specifically to find one to date and marry.

At first she's interested in male lead Naoki, but ends up marrying Kotoko's former Dogged Nice Guy Kinnosuke. They have three kids, with their dad's features and their mom's eye/hair color scheme.

It's also mentioned this manga Haikara-san ga Tooru where the male lead Shinobu Iijyuin was born from a mixed marriage (Japanese father, German mother), and later one of his love interests is Larissa, a Russian noblewoman.

But it doesn't end well .

But I never read both those manga, so I can't really say how much they're what you're asking.

Try Zero no Tsukaima, if you're into seinen ecchi fantasy romances.

Ooh! Just remembered, Karakuri Circus has not one, but TWO romances which fit your description, one that happened in the past and one current one! It's more of a fighting manga though. But it fits.

Some of those harem manga do give the non-Asian female a fighting chance... some of them end without revealing who the guy ends up with, so it's up to the readers to match up Onizuka/Urumi Kanzaki or Negi/Evangeline... IMHO those are strongly likely matchups and I lean towards those...
