Fruits Basket, hands down.
It was just mediocre... it wasn't extremely bad in any particular way, just all-around so-so. The artwork wasn't horrifyingly bad, just generally crummy (and please don't say "it improves over the course of the series"; it really doesn't seem to improve at all. I studied the artwork over the 23 volumes really carefully after one of my friends said that. After giving each volume a rating, it turned out that the quality of the artwork over time (in volumes) changes at a rate of +.007. That's pretty negligible, so it turns out that after all, I could safely say it doesn't improve. That would be fine if the art was already good, but the average art quality for the whole series turned out to be 3.3 out of 10--not awful, but not something enjoyable to look at.) Some of the characters were interesting, others were annoying, but most of all I just couldn't get over Tohru. (It's a shame that she's the main character... kind of a shame she's part of the main cast at all, dragging it down. As for what's wrong with her, besides not having any depth, I think perhaps it's that she doesn't really have any qualities to make me care about her... She's not smart, she's not strong, she's not quirky, brave, pretty, clever, interesting, or resourceful, doesn't have any remarkable skills or convictions, never does much of anything notable... she's just "nice." I don't have a problem with nice characters, but you've got to have some other qualities to have a character worth reading about. Just average and nice really doesn't cut it when it comes to main characters.) The premise was kind of lame, too ("transform when hugged by the opposite gender"?... that's just... so dumb and arbitrary...), but usually I can deal with that. Of course a dumb premise not a good idea for a manga that isn't pure comedy, but it could have been interesting, if some other parts of the manga were good, but unfortunately that's not the case for Fruits Basket. After the half-hearted art, main character, and premise, it takes some effort to even want to know about the plot. But I don't remember anything particularly great or particularly bad there either... though I did stop by about volume 8 (I suppose it's possible that the plot improved dramatically after that... just doesn't seem very likely, though). Just normal slice-of-life fare... which normally would be fine, if only the manga had good art and characters. In short, there's no better word to describe Fruits Basket than mediocre.

So, what just doesn't make sense is that it was the "number one" shoujo manga. Given its quality, it should have been one of those series that just barely managed to get published. Something that some vagrant scanlation group started and then dropped because of lack of interest. Or maybe something that people with nothing better to do would read, just to pass the time. In any case, it certainly doesn't deserve its fame in the slightest... So I'd have to say that Fruits Basket is the manga that falls shortest of its reputation.

Anyway, even for series that are good, the ones that have reached "runaway" popularity are going to be overrated, at least a little, by default (I mean if popularity is through the roof and to the moon and all that, any series' quality is going to cease to measure up at some point), but hey, what can ya do. At least most overrated series are at least a little bit good.

Also FYI, just b/c we think something is overrated doesn't mean we think it sucks. I think D. Gray Man and FMA are overrated but i still like the series. As for my choices below: I hate w/ a fiery passion.

Girl Friends - The most overrated GL manga ever. This made my contempt for almost all yuri even greater. I started reading it, and about halfway though it gave me diabetes dead . Everything is just so bubbly and cute and completely cliched.

Koi Kaze - I probably mentioned this before but I don't remember and I'm too lazy to go back (-_-). Okay, forbidden love between siblings. Their age difference made for an interesting change, but other than that it was typical FL flare, and his lolified sister didn't help my opinion of this much either. mad

I can sparsely agree with you on Koi Kaze...
But GIRL FRIENDS... eek eek eek

Maybe you're not into that kind of stuff and react to it where ever it appears...
Girl Friends is much much better than many GL Manga out there... it's become very very popular now.

<.<
>.>

And don't flame me for this... but for me the most over rated manga is Naruto

Well, I guess it's just me. Yuri isn't my favorite genre, but like anything; if it's done well enough I'll give it a try. Most GL that I've read are more dramatic slice-of-life-ish. Girl Friends was just too, IDK... "positive" I guess (>_>). Everyone is just so understanding of each other that it gets groan inducing. Not saying it has to be angsty, but a little variety never hurts.

I checked the manga stats page (yearly stats) and Gantz, Bleach and Negima shouldn't be there. Gantz should probably be in top 50 rather than top 10, and Bleach and Negima should be waaaaayyy down instead of 12th and 15th respectively.

Other than those:

Anything WATASE Yuu for shojo, and anything AKAMATSU Ken for shonen. Both author have the same problem. All of their story are too similar, meaning you've read one you've read them all. Basically, their 2nd manga and the ones after doesn't worth the craze.

Nana (got painful to read after Vol13 or so)

and in Yaoi/Shonen-ai, Loveless, Okane ga Nai, Viewfinder, and everything from TOHJOH Asami and HIGURI Yuu (Yes, including Gakuen Heaven).

I still read and enjoy most of those. I just think they don't deserve the craze they're getting.

Naruto is overrated. Definitely. But I don't think it sucks or anything. I still think it's a pretty good shounen.

I can't believe D. Gray-man is included. no Is it really overrated? I mean... I think it deserves any popularity it has.. same goes with FMA. eyes My heart aches...

And.. I don't really like CLAMP works as well.. They can be a tad bit overrated.. With all the CLAMP fangirls. There are so much more good mangas out there.. And they're like.. "Ohh CLAMP's the best" and shit.

I really like Fruits Basket. I don't know why people think it's overrated. Is its popularity to the point that it doesn't deserve it anymore? confused Before anyone starts bashing it, I suggest they read the whole series first.

One Piece.. although overrated for some.. is nonetheless, still a pretty good shounen.

Skip Beat is also overrated for me. I don't get why people like it so much. And trust me, I tried reading it.

Code Geass (anime) is another overrated series... You can't help but fall in love with it though..

It's like what Criminal Intent typed earlier in this thread: Just because people says something's overrated doesn't mean it sucks. It just means that it doesn't really deserve the humongous popularity it receives. You even typed up something like that yourself when you mention Naruto.

But most of the time it's because of lots of overzealous fans becoming too obsessed.

Well, everyone else already said it, but Naruto... yellow jumpsuit ninja, just.go.away

I think one piece (the manga) is good enough, and were I live, not overrated. There are many others, but I don't feel like brain surgery right now.

VAMPIRE KNIGHT!!!! so i watched it, after it being recommend and practically shoved down my throat...so i figure...why not??

okay...the first six episodes of the first season held the same stuff just in slightly altered dialog...zero's pissed at vampires, night class are vampires, and yuuki and zero are perfects who have to stop the day class from getting too close to the night class...yuuki has no personality to speak of, and becomes a blushing bride wheneveer kaname even LOOKS at her...the girls from the day class proceed to hate yuuki for her closeness to the GOD that is kaname.

zero, i actually liked...he had depth, and they made his personality with several dimensions...even though he got a little repetitive too... i loved the whole background story
Spoiler (highlight to view)
with his twin ichiru (who i loved and respected anyway, despite his faults and ability to smile at his parents' deaths. his death was so moving to me!!! when he went to find zero and allow himself to become absorbed...)

the chairman!! oh boy did i love him!! he had an interesting cross (pun??) between serious and downright lovable. by far one of my fav characters...and despite the fact that this wasn't one of my favorite series, there were so many good characters...(the ones that weren't kaname and yuuki...)

after the first few episodes, yuuki then suddenly decides that she wants to know what happened in her past after zero starts losing himself to his bloodlust...despite living ten years without wondering...she is determined to ask kaname what happened, and a few vampire attacks later, she actually gets to him and then loses her mind when she looks in his eyes. she can never form a proper sentence in his presence, and she loses sight of her goal.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
kaname suddenly says "i'm going to be your lover" to which yuuki has no response, but thinks of zero as well...she can't choose which guy she loves more...but she has the responsibility to kill zero if he ever loses sight of himself... she has no response to kaname's claim to her, but to what? oh that's right...blush...again...

kaname was one weird person...everyone in the show was a gamepiece to his grand scheme to keep yuuki safe...it's like he could see the future and predict exactly how everything would play out...nothing went against what he wanted!! AT ALL! yuuki was a sniveling mess that couldn't speak her mind
Spoiler (highlight to view)
and when she did, he changed the subject quickly by making her...blush by saying something like the fact that he liked her, and refused to tell her the truth, telling her instead, to keep her false world of happiness

oh forgot to mention...
Spoiler (highlight to view)
they should put a giant INCEST warning on the cover of this one...even though you see it coming a while away, cuz yuuki looks just like their mom...at first i thought she was simply a vessel for their mom, but then kaname awakens her and she remembers being a little sister to the man she remembered saving her...and kaname tells her that it's okay to be incestuous when you're a vampire to make sure that the blood stays pure...despite all this going on, yuuki can't forget the fact that zero is still out there, and the show teases the zero/yuuki fans with her thinking about zero all the time, even in the presence of her personal god...i personally don't have a huge problem with incest...but that's only as far as identical twins...(hence the name) i don't know....it's probably cuz i have a brother, and whenever i saw them together i imagined having to marry my brother, and being born so we could get together...it sent chills down my spine (in the bad way)...it was an unnecessary move to make them siblings...when they could have been pureblood childhood friends that grew up together...there were so many ways to connect their past, with the little tidbits they gave you in flashes of yuuki's memory, that the sudden move left a bad taste in my mouth...

Spoiler (highlight to view)
all the while, ichiru, the poor baby, is mourning the loss of his shizuka-sama, and doesn't know exactly who to blame...he never seems to have a definite side, until the end when he chooses to aid zero, which would give him revenge against rido...and he fulfilled the legend, that one twin would absorb the other. it was sad and touching, the amount of emotions that controlled the twins, and i loved the memories of their past (not in my twincestual way, but just as childhood memories)

my favorite characters were zero, ichiru, chairman cross, yagari, shiki, rima, akatsuki, hanabusa

well...i suppose i need to read the manga too, just to get all the information...the anime left more to be desired, leaving out pieces that would help develop the plot, or explain comments made, like what rido said about drinking juuri's blood while she cried out for haruka...

*sigh* i figured i've ranted enough...i just don't see where all the hype is coming from, the story had a minimally good plot, and good characters, but on the whole, it could have been A LOT better, in my book...

in other news...yaoi-wise that is, i personally couldn't find a show overrated...cuz not too many people watch them...i think if anything it's loveless...the show was good, but ritsuka is TWELVE YEARS OLD!! if nothin else, shouta turns me off... soubi was also a child around that age when he lost his ears... soubi's constant need for physical punishment is kinda weird

kio is my favorite!!! and totally under valued as a person in the show...and out of it i guess...but the show is about a pair of people fighting (for what purpose...if any...i can't remember...) and the sacrifice controls the fighter, telling the fighter how to attack the other team's sacrifice...there are major players behind several teams and i'm not too sure why...cept that oniichan is back and ready to destroy...for something...and mom's a little psychotic and more than slightly abusive...

if anything...i'll give it originality, and they have a mix of yaoi, straight, and even yuri couples, but the goal seems to be to get soubi to "make an even deeper bond" with ritsuka and have sex with the boy...it doesn't seem to be taking off very fast, or very far (but i've missed the last like three releases of the manga)...overall i feel that soubi's dire need to seduce ritsuka, and oniichan's dire need to have ritsuka with him is kinda off putting...it's good overall, but it's not worth the serious hype that a lot of yaoi fans give it...

Well there is the obvious like Naruto and InuYasha.
Hot Gimmick - I love it but it is over rated. After re-reading it a couple months ago, it is cliche but it was fun when I was in high school.
Trigun - really did make a better anime.
Skip Beat - It drags
The Wallflower - just got old really fast
[m]Ouran High School Host Club![/m] - Its trying to hard to be funny and it's all over the place to the point that it doesn't have direct plot.
Loveless - Good idea, good art but that's about it.
Chobits - really hated the ending, and it seems that this manga is known for it's clothing then the story.
Absolute Boyfriend - Good art, but it didn't get good until around the end and really didn't like the sci-fi part of this manga.
