Should we pay for our education?
Should we pay for our education?
i.e. college, public school vs private school...etc.
To pay or not to pay, that is the question.
For the record, yes, this is for a research paper.
Most likely nothing you say will be quoted for my paper. This is just for reference but feel free to talk about it here.
My university has a rule about doing surveys on campus (I have to go through a process) so I thought, why not utilize my MU community.

It's tough enough paying for Uni.
You can't be having loans on education before that. You might as well be in debt your whole life if you can't afford to pay it straight first time.
If you make people pay out of their own pocket, you can't expect it to be compulsory. It's sort of an excuse not to go to school anymore. Like "I can't afford it, so I wont bother" type of attitude, which is in a sense, bad, because although as much as we hate going to school and learning, it is beneficial in the long run.
As for private vs public, hey if the parents want to blow £5,000 a year on their childs education because they think they're gonna do better, then by all means let them.
I say not pay. Why let the government keep more money to themselves? Let them continue to provide for the country, don't let them get away with it xD

If the world was perfect place we wouldn't have. But everything is for sale and education is not an exception. The bottom line is, if you have money you pay if you don't you better be studying as hell.

I don't understand... Don't we already pay through our taxes?
If you're asking whether or not our tax dollars should go to education, then of course it should. Our youths need to be educated, and education must be funded by something.
Well, people have the choice to choose, if they have money and think they can have better education by using that money it's right for them. Now if you don't have the money and go to a public school or university and they want you to pay, then it's wrong. In an idealized way, one shouldn't have to pay for education, but well reality is different.
Here there are National public universities funded by the government and therefore "free" and private universities where you have to pay. Private universities aren't always better so it's more of a matter of choice.

I think people should at least pay some tuition money.
It takes a lot of money to run a school and provide good education, the most part should come from the government itself to provide quality education for the state. A small amount however will be needed. Things like books, facilities and whatnot.
I think ideally for compulsory education the tuition would be based on the parents income.
If the parents' income is below a certain level, the tuition is dropped completely. Rich people pay some more and poor people less so there's equal oportunity to succeed.
Higher education is a different thing. I don't really know how it works in most other countries (I believe in Sweden it's free) but here college and university are highly funded by the government.
Thus the government imposes a rule that tuition fees must be around somewhere around 1600 euros per year for a fulltime course. I believe there are slight variations between universities and courses but it's alway somewhere around 1600 (this does not include books BTW).
I think this is a solid system as it doesn't really alienate anyone, 1600 per year is very reasonable.
Besides that, a student gets student funding of 150 or 220 euros a month for four years (depends on if you live with your parents or not) and you can take out a student loan from the government at very reasonable interest rates with a payment plan over 10 years after you finish your education and get a job. I think this works fairly well.
Pretty much I do think people need to pay for their education, knowledge is valuable after all, just not all of it. The government should make sure to provide the best level of education to the most amount of people.

In Germany you don't pay for school not even university and college, except in a few states where you have to pay approximately 4000$ for tuition and people actually like it. So yeah in my opinion it's a great thing if you don't have to pay for school. I only think that you should have to pay for it if you want to emigrate afterwards.

there's a bit of a difference though, since here there's no need for a private school coz we really do have good teachers that actualy give a damn about you, and most importantly there's no metal detectors and security and stuff like that(no need at least), or bullying either so I don't see a reason for a private school here 😛
but in the US and similar countries I'd pay millions for my childs seurity and education, and a peace of mind for me XD and that's why, probably such private schools exist there 😛

Yes, when it comes to University/College we should pay for our education.
By paying tuition fees (even when Unis are partially funded by the state) we provide a source of income to our university which can be used for research funds, grants, upgrades and so forth. The more money for those things there is, the better our university becomes and thus the more competitive.
EDIT: And PS, I don't believe in systems where all universities are owned and solely funded by the state. That's when the competitive spirit stagnates. If Universities have to 'fend for themselves' then they are motivated to have the best programs possible, to take care of the students, to do their utmost to attract new students... All in the spirit of competition. A university that tries to be competitive and to raise its ranking usually means a degree with a name on it that has value.....

I do think we should pay, just not as much as we are now. I pay a hell of a lot for my uni tuition fees and the place I go to isn't even that great. I don't mind paying but I think it'd be awesome if prices were lowered just a bit.

For Public school? No.
For colleges & universities, yes. Though I wish it wasn't so damn EXPENSIVE. >_> I'm working my butt off now in high school just to get some tuition money before going to college.

You shouldn't have to pay up to university and college.
People need the skills to live and to make proper decisions.
If people want to pay for elementary school they can. Whatever.
It is important that we have to pay for University and College so we get people who really want to be there. (Usually) As well with Universities it helps fund research.
As well it helps buy utilities ect. For example I pay $3000 a year to go to Film School. Most of this money goes towards equipment so that I can learn with the best stuff.
$3000 I think is probably the best tuition. $3000 for a year, $1500 a semseter seems fair; especially compared to university prices of $6000 a year. I think it is ridiculous. In university not only will you be paying more per year but you're there longer. Doesn't make sense. That's part of the reason I decided to go to college.

No, I don't think we should.
I am still confused as to why a basic education is so cheap compared to going to college. Finishing school with just a high school diploma is just about as useful as no diploma at all. There is honestly no point in finishing high school if you don't plan to go to some sort of college. But a lot of people end up with this because they can't afford to pay for school. Its like letting someone make a batch of cookies, then saying they have to pay to eat them.
Luckily, I am eligible for pell grants. (ha, lucky, ironic) Which I understand is something a lot of people from middle class families struggle with. They don't qualify for government help, because their family has a standard income but at the same time, they don't make near enough money to pay off school, and so end up spending their late 20's and early 30's paying off loads of debt from student loans. It's sad, and something a lot of you will probably end up going through.
To me, no matter how valuable it is, education isn't a privilege, its a basic human right. I'm somewhat disgusted that we would have to pay for something we have a right to. For me to go further though would probably involve my leftist propaganda.

In Canada you can't do anything without a diploma.
Seriously. You can't even join the army without a high school diploma.
Or be a call center person or even a garbage person.
