nations go to war for profit, always had been always will be. And by profit, it doesn't always mean money. By profit i mean for benefits. And cause the other party will not cater to "our" whims so we need to show our military power.

Quote from AX
I'm black.

It wasn't about Slavery.

It was about the amount of power the Federal Gov't has to enforce laws that the Secession states believed was under their jurisdiction.

There were 5 states that remained with the Union that had legal slavery.

Slavery wasn't ended until 1864, three years after the war started, and was only ended in the Secession states, not the loyal states that allowed slavery.

RIght, we didn't fight the war to free the slaves. But the issue of slavery was central to the conflict.

No it wasn't.

As far as my history teacher taught, slavery was a sencondary issue for the north. As tzk said the goal was to preserve the union, with or without slavery.

That is why even after the war the states bordering the former confederacy got to keep slavery, as a "reward" for loyalty.
This is true.

Quote from AX

Its true we did not fight over slavery, but to say slavery wasn't a cause of the war is narrow minded in my opinion.

The war was about the Southern States wanting to do whatever the hell they wanted without regards to the rest of the government.

It may have been a minor factor in the Secession itself, but it had little if anything, to do with the actual war.

It was a huge sociopolitical issue, though.

There's a whole lot of social, political, and economic reasons for nations to go to war but one reason that we never like to look at, but still rears its ugly head, is that there's times that a lot of people just want to kill the crap out of one another.

I suppose what you say is acceptable to me. I agree that slavery was a big sociopolitical issue. My opinion is that war is a lot more than the fighting and the killing, but it is true the cause of the fighting and the killing was the north putting its foot down on the south. Also I find it hard to say that slavery was minor, because if the south had won, it would have probably led to much more slavery and even longer oppression.

War is something that comes because we are human. Humans are greedy, hateful and intolerant. You could remove all those reasons and humans would still find something to war over because we aren't content with what we have and we want what are Neighbors have.

🙂 Well then we have reached an impasse. I agree to disagree.

I fully agree.
People would always want what they don't have.

Combination.
In the past, lots of countries went to war because of conflict over land.
Then there was the Korean/Vietnam War fought to stop the spread of communism.
Others like the Revolutionary War in America was government, to free themselves.
Or sometimes, it's all of the above. People just love to fight because they think they're doing the right thing, if people weren't such hateful unreasonable beings, then maybe, problems could be talked out.

And that's why I'll probably never feel a bit of remorse if aliens came to invade planet earth.

Why would you need to? It's not like you are invading, so why would you be remorseful?

If you aren't empathetic to your fellow man, though.

And not all wars are started out of hate and such.

Like I said before: I have something you need in order to survive, so much that you are willing to kill me for it. I am going to try to kill you before you take it from me, because I also need it to survive. The nature of the item dictates that we cannot share it.

That's the gist of it. Simple as pie.

Because old people need something to talk about.
