IDK. While I don't doubt Joukyuu's major badassery. For me he's too laid-back and silly to be very GAR.
I also have a huge man crush on Host Samurai from Gantz, although I don't think I'd let him past second base yet.

this is so fucking obvious.
bruce willis and samuel l jackson.
in die hard 3 bruce shoots himself to kill the guy behind him hahahahahahaha.
the only thing in anime that i've seen that matches that kind of garness is where kaiji cuts his ear off and makes that weenie in the bathroom hold it during the "EE CAADO" battle

Fujimaru from XBlade is pretty gar from what i've seen of him so far.....also the main character can devolop into a pretty gar character as well so i'd keep an eye on him.....but right now he's just potentially gar

I have just been watching Zeta Gundam, and I think Char Aznable fits the description better than most...

Guys, guys-- Most of the manga characters you pointed out are all well and truly incredible manifestations of GARness. I especially agree on Guts from Berserk and Kamina from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
All of you, however, are missing the one person that is indeed GAR at its most rawest: Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce you to Johannes Krauser II from Detroit Metal City.

Koinzell from Ubel Blatt is pretty manly and so is that guy from Ichi the Killer who chops off part of his body and gives it to someone as an apology
And as far as females being Gar it makes scene since as the more manly part of the couple they would be the ones doing the fucking 😀

This is certainly a strange topic but I will add to it, Hanma Yuujiro I would think fits the bill.

My avatar! 😲 It's Maya, how dare you not know her name. 🤨
And I don't really consider those two GAR. Yeah, they may be very strong, but they still don't give the GAR vibe off. That's all personal opinion, though.
ohh thats who that is?.... then this is gonna make me sound stupid, because i thought that was Onizuka from GTO
but yeah.... Maya, that was it
and i'll like to retract my statement on Sanji....cuz the more i think about it the less gar he is.....
but here's a question....the whole gar concept came from that guy Archer from Fate/stay night right?.....if i remember correctly, he wasn't very manly at all......he didn't win one single fight, bag one single broad, or even smoke one single cigar on that whole anime.....and on top of that he didn't look very manly either, he didn't have big muscles, a big sword, or even carry a big gun......so i'm amazed that he's the one who started the whole GAR movement and not someone else
If you've ever played the game, you'd know that he's fucking incredible.
He doesn't need a gun, he's essentially a walking cruise missile. Sword? He can reproduce any sword that has ever existed, except Enuma Elish, as well as any other weapon, and even shield.
And people have missed the point of this thread entirely. Being GAR for someone isn't saying they're cool. Read the first post.

I may be mistaken but like the first post said, I thought the word GAR was a derivative of the phrase otoko GARashi
You won the thread, and yet everyone ignored you.
ED, while hilarious, is a den of lies, and anyone who does not realize this should contact me, because I've been looking to sell my car.
A GAR character is indeed the epitome of manliness. So much so that they earn reverence from all.
GAR did NOT, however, originate with Archer. For one thing, he's hardly a prime example. Kenshiro is GAR. He's all muscle-y, and big, and scarred, and tough, and etc. Archer is a cool cat, and pretty badass, but not the epitome of manliness.
While the story about Archer is likely true, and no doubt a running joke on 4chan, it is not the origin of the term GAR. Look up the term that the user I quoted cited.
Moving on:
I read this entire topic with the intention of jokingly suggesting Bruce Willis, but somebody beat me to it, god dammit. Ah well, I'll reiterate, John McClane is the manliest man to ever walk the earth.
Allow me to correct some previous fallacies.
Gantz: Kei Kurono is not GAR. Neither is the Host Samurai. Gantz compares him to a host, for god's sake. However, the Countryside General, AKA Muscle Rider, AKA Daizaemon Kaze, most certainly is.
Ten Ten: Someone suggested both of Soichiro's parents. Ridiculous. One of them's a woman, and the other dresses in fancy suits. Not even Shin or Mitsuomi are GAR. Mitsuomi broods too much. Too emo. And Shin was a long-haired psychopath. Even if I do harbor a secret gay crush on his sexy ass, he's not GAR, because that's not what GAR is. Bunshichi, however, is somewhat GAR. Facial hair, cigarettes, bulging muscles, manly odors, and the ability to not only stand, but also continue to shit kick people, after being hit by a car, and then having his legs cut to ribbons.
GTO: Onizuka's a pervert, a stupid teacher, lazy, obsessed with video games and porn... and yeah, pretty much the manliest guy ever. Eikichi Onizuka, 22 year old virgin though he may be, is super-GAR, because he solves his disputes via arm-wrestling. Long live the Greatest Teacher in the World.
Generally: Just because someone's a cool, badass character, does not make them GAR. Do they wear fancy clothes and vanquish all their enemies without breaking a sweat? Not GAR. Do they bust out of t-shirts and jackets simply by flexing their biceps, and then proceed to engage in long drawn out battles with other muscle-men, involving all manner of blood and sweat and broken bones? GAR. It's not about cool, it's about testosterone. Get it?
Got it?
Good.
