English is the only language I can confidently say I know along with various slang and varations of it. e.g. Aussie slang, American slang, Pommy English (The English) etc.

I do understand a little French and some Japanese as we are forced to do some from school years 4-8. Although I now wish I paid more attention to Japanese classes.

You do pick up some stuff watching Anime in Japanese though. You also can pick up some French and German words from movies and the fact that the Modern English language borrows from Latin, French and German.

Had to read the prologue of the Canterbury Tales in Year 12 English in both Modern and Middle English (14th Century English with French and German in it). Both funny and painful at the same time.

Oopsie, a double post. Anyway, it's supposed to be easier pronoucing a sound if your ears are used to hearing it, right?

Well, it's easiest if it's something you've tried to pronounce during your infant days while you were still discovering new things and trying to mimic everything. Just hearing it and knowing how it sounds isn't really enough to pronounce it.

But it does give you an idea of what you're supposed to sound like. Aren't you supposed to be more receptive to sounds/accents when you're a baby?

Well yes, hearing it does make it easier if you're capable of pronouncing it.
If I remember correctly, when you're a baby, you don't have all those prejudices and stuff you get from the experiences of living. A lot more time is spent experimenting and practicing to get the right sound instead of what sounds right.

There was something about about picking up patterns and your ears being open to all languages and not attuned to just one, as well.

Mmm... ya, kind of like you might believe someone saying that 1+1=0 when you were 4, but you wouldn't now (it's actually possible in a certain branch of algebra =/). I think that was a bad analogy cry

No, I found it a pretty good analogy.. biggrin

@Shattered: I know some grammatic terms, like indirect object.. But I have no idea what it is in English.. @_@ I tend to forget that for a weird reason..

Yeah, we're just trying to seem "diverse". It's generally accepted that the language of America is English though.

I think we should just become like a waystation country and capitalize on it. I have this idea worked out in my head, but since I don't think anyone wants to hear it, I'll shut up about it now...

Dr. Love, would you mind helping me with understanding my not-so-nice grammatical terms?

So, it seems perfectly reasonable that you can't speak Chinese. But, how is it that so many Indonesians can speak English so well? Most other Asian countries suck at English.

because most of TV show, Movies are in original languages (mostly english) with indonesian subtitles perhaps, and people who often uses computer must learn english, because we don't have any other windows except the english one.
however the irony is that the most native indonesian dont really like american peoples due to the war in middle east, because of religion reasons.
