I didn't forget the nominative.. Just thought that was the least important.. And with the "??".. I meant the grammatic term for.. nominative, genitive, accusative, dative..

Declensions....maybe??

Haha, neither do I. English grammar has got to be one of the messiest things ever. I only understood a lot of it after grammar classes in French.

Don't feel too bad. I know lots of people like that. I can speak some, but I can't read or write. But, most of my friends from Indonesia with Chinese heritage can't speak it at all. Are you Indonesian?

I've been picking up my Japanese book, and I'm doing okay with the particles where they say they equate basically to 'and' or 'apostrophy s', but I'm having trouble understanding what they mean by an indirect objest or nonactive... ack. Anyway, I'm attempting my second language again.

my nationality yeah, but from my bloodline Im pure chinese(father cantonese, mother hokkien), my grandfather was born in china till he was 11 or something, he told me that at that time almost all of his neighbors also moved to indonesia or other countries, because they didn't want to accept communism.

Edit: the reason why indonesian's chinese mostly can't speak chinese is because of politic, it was forbidden to speak chinese in public till 1998. Because there was a rebellion by communism party, included 7 murdered generals.

so our parents didnt teach us chinese, perhaps they want to prevent unnecessary attention.

From what I recall - and it's been a LONG time - English grammar was "officially" patterned after Latin grammar, despite the fact that the languages are very different. Basically the academics of the time (1600s, maybe?? can't really remember...) looked at Latin grammar and tried to make rules etc. to force English grammar to match it. Of course they failed miserably, but we're stuck with the mess. laugh English is such a mashed up mess of different languages from the various invasions etc. that it's pretty hard to make rules for it that actually work.

So, it seems perfectly reasonable that you can't speak Chinese. But, how is it that so many Indonesians can speak English so well? Most other Asian countries suck at English.

@TofuQueen Mmm... informative as always ;) I wonder why Latin since German is most similar to English?

I think it was because Latin was seen as some kind of "ideal" language... (When the heck was the "Classical" period of English history anyway??) Whenever the Classical period was, that's when they adopted the grammar *I think*. This is all from classes I took 15+ years ago, who knows why I can still remember ANY of this stuff when I can't even remember to put the trash out on trash day! laugh
