The no-nonsense blunt type.
If you've ever thought or said "Nice Guys finish last" and really meant it, then you should probably read this LJ post by DivaLion. It's incredibly insightful whether you're male or female.

I LOVE character development, so what I look for in a male/female are different personalities from the typical hero/heroine.
Goofy and cool male lead is great and all, but I have to see character development, otherwise, I'll just knock them off my list.
And as for the girls, well, my fav girl has been Hinata for awhile, and I don't plan on changing her anytime soon. They shy types always stick out to me, but not all the time. Even I get sick of them. Hinata is the only exception though.
Aside from that, a funny heroine, preferably smart and not an idiot.

My favorites are girls that aren't particularly interested in boys at all and are strong and independent without being stereotypically "tomboyish" or bokukko-moe, like Haruhi from Ouran High School Host Club. I also like girls that are brash and unfeminine in a way that makes everyone around them go "You're a girl! You should act like one!" like Kiri from Beauty Pop. It helps if they're cute. 😀
But my very, very favorite character type is fujoshi. If any character seems to even mildly like the man-love I'll immediately love her. So it's needless to say I adore Yuiko from Fujoshi Kanojo. ^^
For guys I like characters that are either naturally submissive browbeaten into submission by their girlfriends. 🤨 Also twins. Especially twins.

I like tsundere girls but the author should not make her too dere-dere in the final part.
As for boys, I prefer the mysterious type.

For female leads I either prefer
-strange and eccentric (and not like those girls who always say that they're an outsider and are strange but to me they seem normal to the point of boring and when they encounter another "weird" person they get weirded even which in my mind is not what a truly strange character would do), like Nodame from Nodame Cantabile or Lilo from Lilo and Stitch, or
-Someone dramatic and vibrant, yet melancholy... like how Edith Piaf was portrayed in La Vie en Rose or Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany's.
As for guys, three types turn me on 😉
-I like guy characters who are extremely smart and use that to their advantage to piss other people off, when they can play devil's advocate really well. I love L from Death Note for that reason,
-Stern and yet passionate lol like Chiaki <3
-Dreamy and sensitive, like how John Keats was portrayed in Bright Star.
I pretty much like characters in general who are intelligent and yet creative

I thought I had a "type," but now that I'm trying to put my finger on it, it seems I just like characters who are unique, fleshed out, and fit with the plot. I love Paradise Kiss, for instance, with its flawed, dysfunctional leads. And I love Nodame despite the fact she follows her love interest around like a stalker and has a juvenile sense of humor.
But as a slight preference, for female characters, I like the type that is smart, blunt, passionate but mistaken for being cold, with a dreamy side. For male characters, I prefer smart as well, sunny and mild-mannered but steely on the inside, and selfless.

Male lead = komiyama yoh from high school debut he is the kind of guy i want to be not waver even in face of other more beautiful woman than his love and even when he not live close to his girl he still thinking of her always. 😀

TSUNDERE 😀 but I also love really awkward characters that don't conform to the typical mc template, awkward meaning they're wacky and a bit hyperactive - for example Haruhi Suzumiya or Toshinou Kyouko (I almost forgot her family name but then Ayano's voice popped in my head XD ). I also really love all the girls from K-ON 😛
Female:
Smart and strong in a relationship. I prefer if they do not cry over small silly things. I don't mind if they're not 'school smart' but I want them to be 'street smart'. Being the apathetic one in the relationship is a huge plus to me. In terms of looks, it doesn't really matter to me if, in the story, they're average/ugleh/gorgeous. But in terms of drawing styles, I really really really dislike overly huge eyes that seems to take up more than half of the face and its pupil seems to make up 95% of the eye (my only exception for that is Fruits Basket, other mangas like the ones from AIKAWA Saki, I do not read, despite the good reviews I read from it.)
Male:
I do not like chubby characters (I mean, in 2D, no offense to anyone). Being an average looking guy or hot smexy bishie doesn't matter. I totally want him to be **devoted to the girl **but not to the point of hurting her. If he's emotional and seems to express different types of expression every chapter of the manga, that's a HUGE bonus to me.
