They need characters for which the target demographic can relate to and empathize with. It is for reasons of both sympathy and jealously.

On one hand, Japanese girls aren't necessarily known for having large breasts.

For the same reason, your average shounen manga features shorter-than-average, excessively passive, and practically shoulderless males, and they're often bored with life (depressed).

I'm not saying that your average Japanese person harbors these traits, but the similarity with the target demographic is no coincidence.

I prefer small or medium rather than seeing unrealistic insanely HUGE ones. Pfft.

From the few shoujo manga I have read, it seems the girls' chest was reduced to make way for more sparkles, flowers and guys who also have sparkles and flowers around them. I remember reading something before: When a girl with a flat chest hugs you, she is holding you very close to her heart. I guess shoujo artists took that to heart when drawing.

@ejo: I second your statement. I also prefer girls with smaller breasts. Huge ones are a turn off for me.

man it's obvious they don't see this body part as something that needs to be part of a girl. It's just something...that doesn't need to be drawn ahem 🙄

Tell them apart by looking at their clothes, in shoujo that is the only way. Put the lead male in a skirt and his a girl too, a few sparkles and bam he/she is a star.

You think any of these people will actualy admit that they don't draw them not to offend the reader...
Because drawing big breasts is offensive to some girls somehow.(i've never fully understood this to be honest) And since the shoujo artist wants even those readers to read he/she will draw to please them, rather than to their own liking sigh.
That is what shoujo is, however there are some rougues if your botherd to look.

I believe in letting people do as they wish, as do I myself. Sometimes, of course, what I wish to do is kill them and they do not wish to die. This gives life interest.

I'd like to ask the same about why a majority of shojo manga heroines are so skinny, doesn't really give a lot for the young girls to relate to. I'm starting to wonder if that's just how the artist likes to draw them lol.

yea that is a really good thing to point out...
most stories gatta point towards larger audiences, and have more people feel special...

if you read shounen mangas, its usually dorky looking guys, who goes through alot of trouble and striving and manages to land on a hot busty chick, whereas shoujo mangas have average plain looking girls somehow have something special about them along with a unique personality that wins a heart of a rich tall built elite pretty boy type

It's like in real life. I mean did anyone ever see models with big boobs in a fashion magazine?
I think people generally associate big boobs with "cheap" (<- that's not my opinion).

I don't care about the cupsize of the heroine as long the male lead is a hottie 😃
So I like both shoujo and shounen mangas.

But I wish they would draw more beautiful and smart heroines because in some mangas the whole female sex apperas to be pathetic.
