Older readers are more closed minded in regards to what they read manga-wise, generally.

I don't know if this is really true. In my experiences, from comparing the now me to when I was still a teens, I now read far more genres than when I first started. however being one who is feeling the onset of age, I don't want to presume that I'm becoming more open minded. In fact, maybe I'm only open-minded in the one medium, manga. (I wouldn't touch an American comic for instance).

If I am indeed becoming more closed minded, I feel that is a bad thing. It means I will end up only being able to enjoy one set of what manga has to offer. I don't know how to read the seinen manga with lots of amazing art and violence and serious themes for example.

Rather than considering myself close minded, I like to think that I'm just more in tune with my tastes and how they've changed. When I started out, I'd read just about anything I could get my hands on. Predictably, I enjoyed some series, and others made me wonder why I wasted my time. Nowadays, I'm a bit more choosy and try to read things I'm reasonably certain I'll like. It doesn't necessarily mean I'll completely shun other genres.

Well- I dunno about 'aging'- I only started reading manga 3 years ago, and I'm still only 19. But, I get the feeling I'm actually becoming more open-minded as I grow older. I still place very strict restrictions on what I read (for example I will NEVER read anything with smutty sex / rape in it), but those restrictions are only placed for stuff which go against my principles (and my views have not changed for the last ten years). Apart from that, I am now reading more genres and demographics than I did, say, an year back.
When I started out, I read only shounen and shoujo; now, seinen is my favourite demographic- and I love josei as well. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the other two!

I think maybe the reason older readers seem to be unnecessarily picky, is that they've gained experience in the field of manga, having tried out most genres when they were younger. They now have acquired tastes, and will go only for stories that meet those preferences. Also, as you grow older, you become less and less open to suggestion, and try very hard to defend your own ideas of 'right and wrong' (even if those ideas are completely flawed 🤣 )

That being said, all this depends largely on the reader's personality. I will never (I hope ^^) become more narrow-minded as I grow older. My present principles will hold, of course, but I'll always be ready to try something new. Otherwise, just like you said, I'll just be missing out on some really good manga.

Close minded is negative. I prefer the term selective 🙂
I read every type of manga out there, but as i grow older i tend to be more selective. It's difficult finding stuff that i truly enjoy, so sometimes i wander around and downgrade my expectations. I enjoy reading manga and i read to be enjoyed.
But i'm still very picky about the manga i read, and the fact that one genre gave me quite a few disapointments it most certainly means it's way less likely i'll ever read the genre with the frequency i used to.

I'm quite picky with what manga I read which I wasen't when I was younger. I would read stuff like one piece and dragonball but now that stuff just freaks me out because nothing ever happens! THEY JUST FIGHT! srsly... 😐

I've also abandoned most shoujo, I just don't find it entertaining nowadays. I suppose my tastes have changed, although that leads to a smaller selection of manga for me to read.

Another thing is that, at least for me personally, when I got older, there was less and less time for manga, which is kind of a shame but the truth nonetheless. Just compared to maybe a couple of years ago, the time I've spent on manga has greatly diminished as other factors pile up (work, school, etc.). Since I prefer to make the most of my time, I suppose it makes the most sense to stick with genres that I have enjoyed and avoid those that I haven't.

I naturally assume every series is going to suck, and then read it and agree that it sucks. Unless it somehow blows my mind I don't think my opinion will change.

One other thing related to the topic is that I am very closed minded when it comes to recommendations my friends make for me. I would much rather take a recommendation from mangaupdates forums than from one of my friends, perhaps because I know their tastes are just so saddening (to me).

Now I know I am venturing into generalizations category here, but of the older people I know, none of them easily take recommendations from others. Not in Movies, music, and certainly not manga.

Just so I say it upfront, I don't listen to anything that isn't J-pop or anime/game soundtrack. Someone pity me!

I've always been opinionated and picky. It has nothing to do with my age.

Having said that, I am willing to try all sorts of new things to find new interests. Certainly not closed minded.

I think I've become more open-minded with age, for example I started out reading mostly yaoi manga, then branched into shoujo, then josei, then seinen... Now I read pretty much EVERYTHING (except hentai!).

It's a matter of acquired tastes; if you've got the sort of personality that's open to liking new things (for example, you like trying out new foods) then it doesn't matter what your age is or how long you've been reading manga, you'll still be willing to try new stuff. However if you have the kind of personality that likes to stick to "safe" things that you know you like, then again, it doesn't matter how old you are, you still won't experiment with new genres. It's a matter of personality, not age. At least, that's what I think. 🙂

I know this is true for me. After hundreds of manga it's true for anyone. It's not so much age but experience. There is so many manga you have to filter out what you want to read. If not, you better be off eating a mountain. For instance, I wont touch it if I dont like the drawing skill or just bad anatomy. Some time ago, I would even go as far by not reading manga with two guys on the cover and a girl. I just assume its a wonderful love triangle and carry on looking for more stuff to read. I dont think its a bad that you are selective in what you read. You just are aware of what you enjoy and what causes you pain. I know right know for me Im in a rut. I read everything in my favorite genre so now lets go exploring into darker stuff.

I don't think I'm becoming "close-minded". That implies that I'm shutting myself off from reading certain genres out of ignorance. I'd say that I'm certainly becoming more "picky" because after years of reading all kinds of manga I've found that there are some types of series that I just don't like. I generally don't like shounen harem slice-of-life comedies; I don't like Nakayoshi-level shoujo anymore. Every now and then there will be a series that I wouldn't normally read that catches my interest (Air Gear and Sakurahime Kaden, for example), but they're rare.

I know what I like and what I don't like. Unless there is something unique in a series that would transcend the turn-off points, I'm not going to go out of my way to read it something that I know I won't like. That's absurd. I think people are getting "close-minded" and "recognizing what one likes after reading a bunch of crap one didn't like" confused.

Back when I was still a 'young fan' I read robots and everything I now hate in this time. I hate it though, I would love to have the old me again but it's hard trying to be someone I'm not. ^^;;

I used to read Shounen with ecchi (and some shoujo supernatural one like Watashi no Ookami-san) but now I tend to avoid it. Earlier ago, I saw my old manga list where I was writing every manga I read ever since I've started (which is a lot, I say). So I checked some of the manga on the first few pages and saw the typical oldies.

And I tell to myself, what have I become? (Yes, I'm still human but I'm being dramatic, lol)

So right now, I'm currently reading Watashi no Ookami-san and recalling a bit of me in the past. 😁
