@Scyfon

The torch lighting was great, at least on youtube. Half the time, NBC was busy showing Yao Ming and Kobe Bryant instead of the torch bearer. When they did show the guy, the timing and angles were all messed up. They even fubarred the damned lighting of the flame.

Ah, we got the whole thing. Pretty good angles I must say. They got every second of it, with the whole wire thing and "running" around the stadium. I reckon the couldron must be the most original one ever (it's not just a bowl this time!), It looks hella amazing too.
...but really, how many people did they have to rally the flame in the stadium!? Just light the damn thing already!

russia declaring war on georgia(the country) during the opening ceremony > the actual olympics

As Russia just happened to right next to my country it's really hard to miss these kinds of news. And it really is so that first watch news for more info what's happening in Georgia and only then maybe I would check opening ceremony.

damn dude, serious shit..
tbh i didnt watch the olympics or news coverage of the war, sadly i heard about it as a result of someoens "facebook status update". sad i know...

lol being in the us is awesome..................

[quote=drunkguy]Forgive the rant. Recovering from a bottle of Blue Label. Gotta love rich people weddings.

       😲 You lucky bastid...

And I don't care about 90% of the olympics anyway. Track and Field for the win.

Same, my good sir. The summer olympics blow, Winter FTW

Chinese wedding + half guests not being around because of olympics = bottle for me. Thank goodness for poor planning. Great Olympics, lousey channel. 😛

Not really a fan of opening ceremonies and all that.... Wasted cash that should be spent on the poor, IMO.

Don't really watch most of the events either.... I'm more into all the doping cases.

As for the poor planning part, 8th August 2008 (080808) is supposed to be a very auspicious day for Chinese (8 being a lucky number).... so I don't think they'd mind the poor turn-out.

That's a bit cynical, ain't it..... People are dying, my friend.

But yeah.... I was paying more attention to that as well.

EuroSport UK has basically 24 Olympic Coverage... 😀 Shame as I can't really be bothered to watch any of it, past the opening and closing ceremonies. 🤣

The opening ceremony in itself was really good (although the thought of all the wasted money constantly passed through my head), but at one point I had to turn down the sound. The Romanian commentaries were retarded as usual, with guys commenting about a country's flagholder that passed quite a few minutes ago and lots and lots of awkward silence when they could've atleast said which country was passing by -___-''. Good job as usual idiots.
The angles were really good at least.
Also seen it on a British channel online but the quality was horrible.

My local channel gives SO much coverage that it's annoying. Apparently, Michael Phillips is a local olympian, so everything is about him and swimming, not that I care.... All I want to see is a little football, specifically Argentina.
Personally, I thought the opening ceremony was too much, but there were some points in the performances (Tai Chi Masters and School Children, The ladies in the really elaborate clothing and hairdos dancing around) were pretty amazing..... 🙂

I couldn't care for the Olympics. The only thing I'd watch it for is the awesome opening animared by Jamie Hewlett (Gorillaz).

That is most likely the most elaborate opening ceremony you'll ever see in your life. I seriously doubt any other countries will put in THAT much money, time, and effort into planning something bigger and better. It's only 'cause China is trying to prove something to the rest of the world, so they put out no stops...

But you gotta admit, that was still pretty amazing!

And the little boy next to Yao Ming! Sad story behind him, but it's great that he survived to be there!

It was amazing, despite the valiant efforts of NBC to chop it up and squeeze lemons into the broadcast. Surprisingly, the director of the opening said the show itself wasn't as costly as people may think. Manpower isn't exactly scarce and expensive in China.

Damn. Seeing all the votes saying their local coverage was great is depressing. I knew I should have swallowed my pride and bummed off my friend's grandparents satellite subscription. They even had a massive HD plasma screen TV to boot. Not like I haven't done worse. 😛

Damned region encoding. Now that I think about it, is this the first time region encoding's been used for streaming video? It certainly is the most widespread to date in any case.

That little boy looked very, very malnourished because he did not look 9 years old.
He looked no more than 5 or 6. Then again I am not sure how the Chinese tend to grow throughout their lifespans (since they are midgety short as a whole), but still that little boy definitely did not look like he was 9 years old.
I dunno, maybe it was because he stood beside the 7"6 Yao Ming... but even so...

that amount of fund could be used to help earthquake victims, anyway its their money and apparently show offing to the world is more important for them.

I think you're missing the point.... and you're starting to politicize the issue.

Warn: Banned

I got NBC HD so I saw everything on the opening ceremony. I liked it. Very unique. I doubt there will be another Olympics like the quality China has provided.

Yeah, well why don't you sell everything you own and then sell your organs and donate to the poor too. China has enough money to save the misfortune and do the Olympics.

To all people who brings politics into Olympics and try to ruin the Olympics mood, I have a message for you, listen very closely: "Get the F$CK out". I'm serious, I don't care about China's political issues, they did a good job at the Olympics ceremony, and now we will all turn our focus to the Sport itself.
