Change in protagonist's personality

I'n looking for a manga where the main character who is male's personality changes from timid/ordinary/normal to a colder and stronger personality.
The ultimate example is The Count of Monte Cristo. Another good example is Anakin Skywalker (the original triology doesn't count because Darth Vader is an antagonist, rather than the main character).
Manga examples would be:
Ubel Blatt - Koinzel (Ascheriit)
Parasyte - Shinichi Izumi
Gantz - Kei
Kurogane no Linebarrel - Koichi
Historie - Eumenes (maybe)
That's all that I can think of at the moment.
btw: no yaoi, yuri, gender benders, etc.

Sometime midway during the first part where he stops running away from his 'destiny' and goes back to Haruna's world to protect her/it.

A couple of volumes from the start I think. I don't remember very well, maybe vol 2 or 3.

Seconded. I'm really enjoying it so far.
Holyland to an extent (it's still developing). The story is pretty much about that change though, or about the tendencies that already existed within the main character, at least.

Yup.... definitely..... totally forgot about that one.....bloody awesome manga, IMO.
It's a great example of a human male discovering the beast within.

not sure if you wud be interested, but there's sorta a reverse change (where overly tough characters become nicer) in Berserk, Claymore, and it looks like its gonna both ur change and a reverse change is gonna happen to two characters in Vinland Saga
