Site Poll - Chat Box 144 - Bad Art

I've always had a high tolerance for art that isn't to my taste, but it has definitely improved as I read more manga and became less picky about art styles. The old-style art (eg. 7 seeds, Glass Mask) has definitely grown on me, though I didn't like it at all at first. And that's a great thing, because I am reading all these awesome manga that I would have missed out on otherwise (eg. Gokusen, Angel Densetsu). There are still times when I'll look at the cover art or read a few pages and I just can't stand it, but that's rare. I've become broader-minded regarding art and have been well-rewarded with the manga I've found.

Some masterpieces don't really have nice art, but they are still masterpieces.

Hm... usually I've spent awhile looking over series before hand and that includes taking note of some part of the art.
Le'see here... dropped,
Alichino (actually beautiful art but I could not after the first two volumes tell the characters apart)
1999 Shanghai (The art felt dated, unattractive but dropped mainly due to plot)

humm, I do start new series mostly based on the art but a good story with bad art will still be good. Though, I must admit, I'm less lenient on the story when I find the art to be so-so, or bad.

I have dropped a couple of series because the art didn't please me. I can't remember their names from the top of my head though. Anyway, I will look past the art if the story is truly intriguing.

I chose option 3, and mostly because it's slightly different from one, like in Angel Densetsu, yeah, the art wasn't pretty, but matched the story (that is about a guy 'that looks like a delinquent') And there are tons of shorts mangas with nice art and shitty plot :C which sucks when it's the other way since lots of people miss good story-lines because of the art isn't that nice.

even though i´ve dropped a series cause of art (hunterxhunter). most of the series i watch aren´t all that great when it concerns to art.. especially certain josei... if the story is good and the art doesn´t burn my eyes i take it and read it till the end xD
actually what i can´t stand is when the art is good and the plot is shitty it feels like such a waste

I find that the ones who read a lot of manga become more tolerant of "bad" art, while the newer readers are more picky.
I only dropped two series because of the art, though not solely on the art alone, but it played a factor:
Hana yori Dango (not ugly/bad art, but I just couldn't stand his super curly hair. That aside, the story was boring to me)
Itazura na Kiss (boring story, plus the guy was pretty ugly)
Basically, if the main characters are butt ugly, I won't read unless there's a REALLY good story to back it.

A story below par / average + bad art = dropped
But I'd rather take on a good series with "crappy" art than a lame excuse for a manga with "amazing" art (i.e. Bride of the Water God).

it's quite surprising to me that so many votes are for option 1 or 3. well, your loss.
if there is an option between "to do" and "not to do", I will always choose the latter.
"what kind of crazy, twisted conclusion is that...?" - banana bread no puding
Most of the time, the art is to my taste if everything else is,
since the mangaka usually aims to make the art thematically fitting.
Gritty, raw brush samurais.
Moeblobby harems.
Disgustingly shoujoish art for the Cinderella.
Avantgarde for the psychological mindfuck seinen.
Strong use of black and shading in the adult tragedy.
Et cetera.

You guys do realise that the definition of art may be different for different people? I find Ushio to Tora's art quite appealing; ditto for GS Mikaki, Kyou Kara Ore Wa!, so on.
There are times when you will miss what you never had. I wonder how you will find what you so desperately need.

While I do agree that oftentimes great things are overlooked for silly reasons, for me manga is very much a visual medium. It's not like a book where I receive a basic description of a character and let my imagination take it from there. What I see is what I get, and if I can't enjoy the characters and their reactions just as much as the story... well, I get bored.
At least that's my view on the whole debate.
