The one with all the samurai in it!

Heh, couldn't resist. Never read this kind of genre in my life.

Vagabond, Blade of the Immortal and Lone Wolf and Cub.

Vagabond is just Perfect.

I really like samurai deeper kyo because it has a touch of comedy, drama, mad fighting skills, and really good art, but I am quite puzzled as to why scanlator groups stopped scanlating after chapter 174.... while there are a bunch of other scans for chapters in volumes like 26 or whatever 😢

I've read so many, I've forgotten most of them.

However, I do agree,

Vagabond and Sidooh are both really good. Not to mention the art seems to compliment the story...

Lone Wolf & Cub, classic Gekiga stuff. Also currently reading Samurai Legend, which has yet to make much of an impact on me. I'd like to get into Botchan no Jidai, another Taniguchi-illustrated samurai biographical account.

idk about best but my favorite is Rurouni Kenshin, it has a special place in my heart because it was one of my first animes/mangas and the first volume of manga that i myself have ever bought was a Kenshin volume

Lone Wolf and Cub is the best. It is also very realistic and I learned more about bushido and daily life in the edo period than any nonfiction book I have eever read.

Kenshin (cos I've got a soft spot for it even with its annoying bits..)
Blade of the Immortal cos its a work of art..

Rurouni Kenshin is worth giving a chance. It's full of borderline-magical attacks with ridiculous long names, the character designs were a bit lame to start off with, and the jokes werent as funny as they thought they were, but it's one of the best overall mangas I've read. After the first few volumes of character introduction and shouen 'inspirational' silliness the real story kicks in, has a story arc of badassery, a story arc of pulling the rug out from under your feet, and a decent ending. Plus the main character is an adult, you can always tell absolutely clear whats going on during the fights, they never get repetitive, characters have limits and change realistically as they get older, and silly powers have a price.

Blade of the immortal is brilliantly drawn, quite arty and has a plot that rambles all over the place with a huge and unpredictably wandering cast of interesting psychos. Also violent in quite disturbing ways when you least expect it (at least I thought so until I started reading Berserk, at which point nothing would ever be violent again 😀 )

I quite liked the anime of Peacemaker, (at least the main story of the wussy little kid getting revenge and hacking arms off people) but there were too many rubbish attempts at comedy and this was even worse in the manga; I couldnt make it past a few chapters. If they just told the story straight without trying to be cute it would have been a masterpiece of disturbing brilliance, especially considering how well animated the fight at the end is.
I've seen one episode of Kyo and every single character managed to annoy the pants off me, so I've never given it a chance..
😀

Let's see ...

For realism i say: Vagabond; Blade of the Immortal

For fantasy i say: Samurai Deeper Kyo; Rurouni Kenshin; Usagi Yojimbo (if you have never read this, then i recommend it to ALL)

For comedy i say: Gintama; Samurai Champloo

Does Usagi Yojimbo count? I know it is an American comic (Published by Phantagraphics, then Dark Horse). But it is drawn by a Japanese Mangaka. I think it is one of the best Samurai stories ever. Even if Sakai borrows heavily from the Akira Kurosawa films, Zato Ichi, and Lone Wolf stories. I still think this is one of the best ever.

How can it not count? This series is awsome!
