I'm about as addicted to this game as some people are addicted to WoW... If you haven't checked it out yet, http://www.scorehoro.com is the site for guitar hero.
I would say going from medium to hard was one of the most difficult things. Not only do you have to learn the orange button, you have to deal with a speed up of the fret board (so the notes come faster and you have less time to think). Try the practice mode out!! It lets you slow down the notes to 50%, 65%, and 85% of the full speed, so you can learn whats going on!
I think the hardest thing I had to do was gain pinky strength (just try to work out your pinky when you have free time). Once I did that, the second hardest thing was learning how to shift your hand from GRYB to RYBO. In the harder parts of the game you learn to use three and even two fingers so your fingers can be all over the place...

Hahah... I'm afraid of this ominous "orange" button. XD
oh how I'm going to love this game whenever I play it.
Umm... this advice pertains to StepMania... but it should be similar, right?
Your fingers should be familiar with the buttons... but watch the notes about halfway on the screen... feel the beat... and hit the buttons as the beat fits... that way, you're always ahead of the game somewhat. This way, you're like... in super reaction mode instead of thinking about the notes. 😀
hahah... for StepMania, I felt that it was easier to turn up the speed to 2x... if you have that option for GH2, it may be easier to go faster. (I know it sounds counterintuitive...) This is all because it just gives you the notes you need to react... not too many so you start freaking out with memorizing all of them... and it's not too fast so that you won't have any reaction time.

i clicked that link. it didn't work tear lol. and yeah like when i switch to the orange it totally messes up my positions. i've been getting 70-75% score songs after the switch to hard. and the only reason i survived is cause of star power during the red. it's so much faster. its still hard for me to hit RB(i can do it but switching between that and YO is killer). using that middle and pinky finger just feels so odd. i failed that one bonus song by drist. so sad. i died at the solo. >:-(
anybody ever get finger cramps? i swear it feels like my hand is slowly but surely forming into a claw.
edit-

omg freebird on expert. 100%. i had to click the link to watch that video. that is insane

BWUAHAHAH, i love this game 😀 yeah when i started from medium to hard mode it was really hard... and i get hand cramps some times but it goes away now.... my friend helped me get to medium to hard took about 1 day tho but i was playing medium for a while 😀 now i play expert woo!!!!! i play the 360 version more songs. if your wondering who this guy is he is like a freakin pwn machine on guitar hero. HE EVEN HAS THE LOG GUITAR! yes beat 5 star on all of expert mode. aka 48 career songs and the bonus songs - 74 songs 5 star on expert mode. right now im trying to do that i got 60 out of 74 5 stars on expert 😀 he kills me in gh2 tho >_> 😀 yah so what you ned to do is for the O button is to practice easy with only 2 fingers, so only use your index and middle finger so but your middle on the yellow and practice switching, wen you do medium mode start using your ring finger in the blue button so just practice switching around until you get it right i guess. i tell me friends that and they do fine now. well good luck on doing this
edit- i saw my sister playing medium mode since i showed her that i can play arterial black - the bonus song, by drist on the real guitar. well atleast the tune on it. and she was like whoa! then she played it on medium mode i was REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY suprised that there was an orange note on that song i was like wtf........ why is that there so yah- i like doing the solo on it makes my fingers go fast on expert mode

@kamithewolf
woa i never heard of that. that is practically genius. will give it a try. i need to complete easy anyways since i started on medium. gotta unlock all teh guitars. 🙁 i watched that video on freebird. but the comments mentioned something about the guy doing it on hyper mode or somethin like that. that makes it easier supposedly?
ye that song is pretty nice. you can actually play it though? unfair. i have an electric but can't play worth shiz. need to learn one day 😀 and ya it has an orange on medium. i made sure to remember that when i played it to get a 5star. so annoying. the first time i saw it i was to surprised to react lol. wanna try out six but i know i'll fail lol. damn hard mode. 😀
on a side note. i wish they have more hard bands like all that remains etc. i mostly listen to that genre. it would be great if they came out with a game version with only bands like darkest hour etc 😀

I was such an obsessed freak for GH1&2, but then.....I got a plasma TV. The game is crazy delayed and the timing is way off in HD. Even adjusting for HD in options doesn't help cuz it's always just a little off. It was hard not playing for a while. I would have dreams of the scrolling fretboard and even DL'd a lot of the songs from both to listen to when I'm driving/@work. I still play when I go to best buy, makes all the kids stare at me cuz I throw down Hard mode and dance and sing-along in the aisle.
The best thing to get good at guitar hero is to throw Guitar hero parties. I used to every weekend. Get as many people as you can who like guitar hero together for a night and socialize and critique each others playing style. Playing Co-op with differnt partners or teams is really fun too. Just like real guitar, playing in front of others makes you better for some reason. It makes for a really good time, as long as you provide snacks and drinks (beer is good {if you are old enough} cuz shots will make you too buzzed to play really fast)!
Next Nov. is Rock Band. Can't wait.........
Life is tough......but it's tougher if you're stupid.

lol, six is so hard XD on expert mode, its the only song i got a 3 star. but yah free bird on 100% thats crazy >> especall on the zig-zag of doom, ive only seen my friend get 98% >> yes you say its genius >_> thanks for the compliment 😀
- ypu about that guitar hero parties, i had one like that before with the person mentioned above but it was little, and we liked went crazy with playing >_> like one person started strumming and another did the fret, and stuff,
about the other thing with the bands, like six, try playing like ummmmm the light that blinds, i like that song.
yah i cant wait to get rock band its gonna pwn!
about that person i mentioned befre >> he is really, i mean like really good >> so far he only played expert mode and he has nearly 20 million, like 19.5 mill as his career score XD
hyper mode makes the song easier, cuz they spread the notes out more, but it looks fast, like i said LOOKS so you dont have to go faster it just makes it easier for some people to see the notes

I think I can say, without undue arrogance, that I rock at this game. Although I haven't mastered all the songs on Expert yet (I got stuck on 'Rock This Town', largely because I hate the damn song) I can handle pretty much everything up to that, and can even do some of the last set- I've cleared both 'Beast and the Harlot' and 'Institutionalized' on quick play. My favourites have to be 'Collide' by Anarchy Club and 'Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart' by Stone Temple Pilots.
I can give you some advice: when you transition from medium to hard, they start using the orange key, but only every now and then. It isn't until you get to expert that you have to use the orange key just as much as the green one. Once you start doing this, you have to get used to 'shifting positions'- sliding your entire hand up one key so your first finger is on red and your last is on orange. In some cases, it can even help to shift to third position (first finger on yellow, third finger on orange) but this is usually reserved for fast 3-4-5 patterns or rapid chord shifts (like in the chorus of 'Collide'). Also, one of the hardest tricks is doing a rapid chord shift from 3-4 to 4-5 or back, because you have to alternate your middle and pinky fingers without moving your ring finger; because of the way your tendons are connected in your hand, this is very tough. That's another time I'd advise shifting to third position and using your 1st, 2nd and 3rd fingers instead. Be careful- chord shifting, especially repeated chord shifting, can put a lot of strain on your hand. If you want to see just how hard it can get, try 'Freya' on expert.
Ultimately, you have to get used to playing in second position a lot. A lot of songs have a lot more orange notes than greens, so I can be beneficial to play sections completely in second and just stretch your first finger to reach the green button. It's a lot easier than stretching your pinky to reach the orange from first.

Hard mode's fun but expert's where it's at. I remember playing sweet child of mine at best buy on expert, which is one song that I enjoy playing, and two guys that were watching me were like damn I can't do that. After I left they switched to easy so that they could play.
@Arcane yeah I would say the same thing about rock this town since it took me several weeks just to beat it, but right now I am having trouble with psychobilly freakout and the song before it in the PS2 version. God those songs kick my ass so much that my hands just spaz out and don't know what to do.
Now I can't wait for Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80's.

yah pschobilly freakout kicks my ass too, on expert right? that where im at- its the most fun on expert, but im able to get through it better i think ill be able to get a 5 star in it about a week cuz im continueously gettin 4 star on it... and freya on expert mode does put a strain on your hand like a while later it was hard to play things that i could hit no problem - btw any beat jordan on expert? i have 😀 when i first beat it i was so amazed i jumped up at down i almost broke my controller XD it feels so good after beating a song you couldnt beat in a long time T_T i was so happy hehehe
- i guess im good at this game but there are a shit load of people who are better than me. especiaally that person i mentioned in that last post i put where i said he is like a gh2 god XD yah we put rankings on it... like f,e,d,c,b,a, with the -, and + signs. XD i wish there were versus mode on xbox live then you could totally try out your skills against people and you would totally get better 😀

eeek. i went to play some songs on medium for fun. u definitely get better just trying to play hard and the lower levels just seem too slow after going up.
in any case i know some of you had to have played DDR at some point. i remember at least in DDRmax that you could edit songs. the GH songs are obviously a lot longer but i think it would be pretty awesome if there was an edit version to create your own song in the sense of when u hit stuff etc. think they will make that possible in the future?

Whoo-hoo! GH rulez! I actually just got back from FL where I was visiting with my fam and I bought the game for my 2 baby bros (who are 20 and 15, lol). We had a super great time playing together and it was fun having big-sis kick their arses. The only prob was my 19 month old daughter getting sick of watching us play and hitting the start button on our guitars or turning off the tv on us. She looks so cute though dancing with the guitar in hand. lol
I don't usually have time to play, so I'm only now going into hard mode and using the orange key. I still haven't been able to get 5 stars on Institutionalized. 😢 The tips you guys are giving about moving your whole hand up should come in handy. My hands are kinda small, so I always get hand cramps...I think I just push down too hard.
But, I totally am that person chillin' in Best Buy, asking all the ten year olds if they want to play, 'cause I agree that it is so much more fun to play cooperative mode. The only difference is that I have a baby sleeping in a stroller next to me....
Hey, she likes the background noise and it was the only way I could get her to take her nap for a while there. lol
ROCK BAND!!! CANNOT WAIT!!! The drums will be the selling point for my hubby. 😃 😀 😃 😀 😃
