I'm looking for a manga with a main character who's totally wacky, in a funny/random/eccentric way, who is surrounded by a small group of other characters who care about them, if grudgingly, and help them with their escapades, some equally wacky and some who act more as "straight men". The kind of manga where the main character does or says something totally insane and all the other characters get these over-exaggerated WTH? looks on their faces. I'd also like the wacky main character to be female, if possible, although it's not necessary, and for there to be a bit of romantic subtext between them and one of the primary members of their little entourage - but just one of the members, no harem. No smut either, please.

Basically, something like Yankee-kun to Megane-chan, where the heroine gets into all kinds of well-intentioned mischief for random reasons and the hero finds himself chasing after her to help her even though it's against his better judgment. Also, the whole student council entourage thing is there, and it's exactly the type of humour I'm looking for.

The girl in Oresama Teacher acquired a gang that worshiped her despite of (because of?) her crazy behavior. Not quite what you're looking for, since they're quite crazy, too, but there's definitely the subtext thing going on with her newly acquired male sidekick. 🙂

I've read Oresama Teacher (and loved it! It's exactly my type), but since I never update my lists anymore that's my fault. Now that you mention it, though, I could have added it as one of the examples of what I wanted, even if it is sorta leaning into the "harem" genre the way things are going now. Good suggestion anyway!

Now that I think about it, both Gokusen and Nodame Cantabile are this of manga. Maybe that's why they were so funny. 🤣
