I'm looking for manga where the main character is socially excluded and makes progress towards being accepted by peers or works towards making friends.

The reasons behind social exclusion could be anything. It'd be best summarized as "a characteristic or set of characteristics the main character posesses which are different enough from those around them to cause social exclusion".

The characteristics could be apart of their physical appearance (being scary looking, ugly, unattractive, etc), apart of their personality (arrogance, naivety, ignorance of how to socialize, ignorance of common interests like fashion/tv/etc, lack of self confidence, etc) or it could be a nonpersonal characteristic (like they're rich/poor or moved their from somewhere where the customs or behavior is different like another country or the city or the countryside)

well for whatever reason for their social exclusion in the manga the main character should either want to change and makes an effort to do so or is compelled to change by someone else like a new friend or something.

Some dark ones which are shoujos are Vitamin (SUENOBU Keiko) and Life by the same author...and another shoujo - very heavy drama is Devil and her love song and hana yori dango but all these are based more on bullying.. another odd one is Cat street......

I don't mind shoujo, I've read tons of it probably more shoujo than shounen only because of the topics in which shoujo generally covers and not because I prefer the shoujo genre itself.

Mind you when I said any manga I meant any. From dark to light, from drama to comedy. It can be any demographic from shoujo to josei from shounen to senien. As long as theres a character trying to fit in somewhere it meets the qualifications and should be suggested.

it could be a character trying to fit in at school, at work, in a new world (like the world of celebs/music/fashion/etc), in a new town anywhere.
