Indeed the categories searching method is missing.
I use this a lot, you like a guy or girl that is weak in the start and grows stronger, then you can chose weak to strong as the right category.

Personally, I always check recommendations on MAL and Reddi* threads, then explore by genre. Once you find one hidden gem, it usually leads you to 5 more.
