Well pain would be a pain, but hitting a being that is essentially just a soul and body would be a rather difficult task for beings that are bound much more to the corporeal world as Akatsuki would be. I mean could they without using reiatsu even be able to damage any of the captains, let alone a low level shinigami?

Although given the ability of shinigami to deal directly with the souls of their enemies...I suspect that as long as every Akatsuki member has a soul...they will be easy pickings.

the shinigami have no defence against genjustu
i think they are about the same speed
akatuki seem to use thier surroundings better and have better tactics
they would most likely be fighting outside the spirit realm so shinigami would be weaker
akasuki may not beable to harm shinigami for lack of reiatsu unless chakra=reiatsu

good matchups include:
deidara vs hitsugaya
hitsugaya vs kisame
itachi vs byakuya
hidan vs zaraki
unohana vs tobi (based on personality(tobi still goofing off))
kakuzu vs soi fon
sasori vs soi fon (no body to hit twise)
yamamoto vs pain
kurotsuchi vs zetsu

Well explain how Akatsuki sees the shinigami first. When it comes down to it the Captains are super powerful spirit, while Akatsuki are still human, they have no chance.

if they can't fight on a fair bases then there would be no point in having this topic.
this thread assumes they they would be able to fight each other on a relativly even basis.

besides, these two series were not written to mesh with each other, there will be some snags, let it go and move on.

and if you want to be really technical it's questionable if a zanpakuto can even cut a living soul. and even if it can there would be no reason to since shinigami don't meddle with human affairs. so neither side will do anything and thus there will never be a "Akatsuki VS Squad Captains"

Umm... of the the Gotei 13 would win because the Akatsuki guys would just have a flashback of a conversation that happened 20 seconds ago, and in the meantime the Squad Captains would just walk up to them and cut their heads off.

you sure the captains won't just be standing around monologeing about why they are stronger and the enemy is weaker and what makes them stronger and the differences between them?

You don't have to take that sentence too seriously. Since I thought that it also could be translated as "This sword of mine...". But the translator decided to put 'he' for whatever reason that was...
