Well I haven't read the manga so I do not know how close its gonna be, and yes I saw the first episode and so far so good.
So I just watched the first episode of this new series.
I guess the second episode will determine what direction this one is taking. If it is gonna follow the manga, then this series is gonna last forever.

So far it looks like that if they are going to follow the manga, it'll have to be with the homonculi. They have the Envy-Lust-Gluttony trio (Envy making an appearance in the opening/ending) but it's too soon to say whether they have Bradley become Wrath (like the manga) or Pride (like the anime). There could be some foreshadowing with Bradley mentioning his son (who is Pride in the manga after all). And we did get a glimpse, albeit a very short one, of Father.
As for the story itself, I have no clue where they are going to take it, since they decided to start the series with a significant original character who connections with both Kimblee and Mustang. It's hard to say whether they are starting from square one or not.

For those who aren't aware of it, FUNimation acquired the rights to rebroadcast FMA:Brotherhood on their site (japanese w/subtitles). This was only announced last Friday, and it will start this Thursday, April 9 at 10am Central time (11am Eastern).
Hope they can handle the traffic.
If you've ever thought or said "Nice Guys finish last" and really meant it, then you should probably read this LJ post by DivaLion. It's incredibly insightful whether you're male or female.

Seems like scantalation groups do it faster...

I'm really curious -- am I the only one to find the OP funny? I mean, the part when the song speeds up and Ed loses his arm, followed by Al with his entire body. And then? Winry sways with the wind.
...
😕
I was kind of expecting something dramatic, just because of the change in tempo. Other than that, the OP was great =D.
By the way, in response to true_grave_unit's post, I'm 99% sure that they'll stay pretty close to the plot. I think that the introduction of the original character was just so old fans wouldn't find the anime repetitive and to introduce some of the later plot elements.
For example
The fact that something is fishy with the military and the country.
The fact that Bradley isn't as nice as he seems to be.
And it introduces Kimbley as a blood-thirsty psycho dude.

Actually I ended up amused by the quality of the animation and SFX, along with the fucking aweonme ost

Well, so far it seems to follow the original (manga) storyline. Let's just hope it doesn't deviate.
Why? Because I love the relationship between Ed and Winry in the manga.

its pretty much following the manga by the letter.
anyone know if there is a list and or the actual pictures they throw up between commericials and the final one at the end of the episode have been collected somewhere

Not exactly by the letter. It did skip on a few things.

I think it's skipping certain arcs that has been covered in the first series...
Also, it's deviated quite a bit...but generally close to the manga's storyline.

Yea, I noticed it skipped the gold mining town.
Which then leaves the gap as to where that mustache guy that Scar made his lacky came from.
The water alchemist from the beginning was new as well.
But other than the minor dialogue and actions, its sticking quite close to the manga, not to mention keeping a steady pace.

I can't help but wonder, this series isn't expected to be a long-running shounen series ala Naruto, Bleach, One Piece and the manga still hasn't ended yet. They've also skipped quite a bit from the earlier chapters of the manga which could've served as filler.
How are they going to end this without completely screwing up the ending like the first series? Unless this the new anime really is planning on going on fillers until the manga ends...

The manga should be ending soon and the anime has still much to catch up to...
