Well, we have to prove that it (can be) interesting, original, complex, intelligent, and engaging. Find some age-appropriate series for the occasion.

First: Ask if they've read any manga/seen any anime.
If they have: Ask which ones. Many think anime is stupid because they've only seen Naruto, Sailor Moon, or Pokemon. Tell your friends, if this is the case, that those series were actually made for younger readers.

Most people think anime is stupid because they haven't seen it or have and couldn't get past the use of chibis and ridiculous "comedy relief". Try recommending some more detailed, mature series without an abundance of chibis to ease them into the world of anime. Blood+ and Wolf's Rain are excellent anime for new viewers. Tell your friends that in Japan, manga has evolved so that it is like movies or books here. (Toss this fun fact at them — more than HALF of all cinematic releases in Japan are anime.) Many are silly, but there's comedy, romance, drama, sci-fi, and... even the equivalent to pornography. There are just as many genres in manga as there are in TV shows or movies or books here.

If they're not the type to bow down at a challenge, and they haven't seen anime, go all out. Tell them they're being ridiculous and immature for criticizing something they do not have extensive experience with, and find a series they'd like.

Good luck!

Don't take anything like that to heart. People often condem what they don't understand. Different strokes for different folks, so it's cool. As for me, I could honestly care less what my friends think about it because, as far as I'm concerned, some of them have more...questionable interests than something as simple as reading manga. They'd better not even go there with me. Seriously eyes

But like the poster above said, if they think anime and/manga are stupid, then ask them why and what they've seen that's made them arrive to such a conclusion; either that or just don't bother with it. Labeling something as stupid that's relatively harmless and that you haven't even tried before is kind of silly, I think.

This would be the scenario:

Friend: "Manga is stupid."
Me: "Well, that was an uneducated opinion... have you even read enough manga to make such an accustation? It's the same as saying books in general are stupid."
Friend: "..." -cue either apology/agreement/retort-

i would give them a series that's really good like Death Note that might be a good anime for starters or FMA and as for manga i think Bakuman and Unbalance×2 might be a good way to start off your friends

Meh, their loss.
In a way, it's also better for some of us - it'll just mean less potentially annoying newbies in the community.

I'd slap them(lightly if they were bigger than me) across the face and question their obvious bad judgement. I'd proceed to explain why their ed, edd, and eddy cartoons suck and then I'd question their literacy since they likely haven't read a book in a long while. My arguement is in no way convicing, but ignorance is and will always be there. I can't say: 'Go read Monster.' and they do it. It hardy ever happens, instead they nitpick your ideas till you either force feed them some FMA or you crush their will to argue.

I wouldn't do or say anything.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I have no right or desire to try and convince them to change their minds.

Arguing, fighting or calling them 'stupid' and 'uneducated' (or something along those lines) is nothing but a display of your own arrogance, narrow-mindedness and inability to accept other people's opinions. In other words, you're proving that you're just as silly as they are...or maybe even more.

Just keep doing what you love. If they have such a big problem with it and try to avoid you because you're a 'weird otaku who reads dumb manga' , I guess it goes to show that they aren't friends worth keeping...If they have no respect for your feelings regarding such a trivial issue, what would they not say if it was about something much more serious?

I'm not trying to convince them of anything, besides letting them know that they themselves have said something narrow minded. My friends would do the same for me, because that's how we are with each other. Well, my friends don't say manga is stupid in the first place. They just aren't into it. It's just the fact they judged something so abruptly and harshly that I brought it to their attention.

When people I know say bad things about Anime, I just dont say anything at all. Sometimes I even agree with them. Why do they need to know what I like?

Its not worth getting into :/ Face it that most people in the world are never going to understand anime. If I limited my friends to the ones that like anime, I would not have many of my best ones xD
