Well one way without causing any hostility would be to ask them what genre of movies / books they like, for example if they like comedy then recommend them your favorite comedy, and if they dislike it then let them say whatever they want?

People like what they like, there's no changing that and it's not something you should hide. Yet, pick your battles. Politely disagree and change the subject. Getting into a big argument isn't worth it and your good friends will accept that you like manga. The 'friends' who keep picking at you about it aren't really good friends, keep them at a distance.

It's not like you're asking them to join your geekdom, you like it, end of story. Most people wont be convinced into accepting anime/manga anyways, they already have a preconceived notion about it and that wont change no matter what you say.

I'd deal with it. People have their own opinions about stuff, and since they're my friends, I'd respect their opinions.

I would agree with them because in all honesty who are we kidding? About 99% of manga is utter garbage. I suppose you could say that about any medium of entertainment but the difference is that manga has yet to produce something the calibre of say Paradise Lost by John Milton.

well you are right about how calling them stupid is bad,but standing up for what you like is not so horrible, some times as you said your friends are just "arrogant, narrow-minded and cant accept it" but even though, you still love your friends and dont want to let go of them, but i guess thats just immature to try and have it both ways.
