Dunno for sure.

From the past year, probably Kurenai and Spice&Wolf for anime.

Not sure on the manga side.... I'm currently really enjoying Watashitachi no Tamura-kun which is supposed to be based on a novel, but I've yet to read the novel.

I'm not even sure if I'm answering the question right.... coz I dunno what a visual novel is, exactly.

Besides, I dunno which romance anime/manga are based on dating sims.

Tsukihime manga, anime sucked old hairy grandpa balls. Really it was the only one I could choose, only visual novel I played. School days was kinda cool.

Basically it's a choose your own adventure book with pictures, or very rarely animation.

You're thinking about light novels. Visual novels are PC games (occasionally with console adaptations as well). Probably 60-70% of harem anime/manga are based off them, honestly.

Watashitachi no Tamura-kun is based off a novel by the author of ToraDora. Dunno if it's any good, but no one seems to be translating it yet.

Not sure about manga, but there have been some good anime. KGNE was a really good drama and the second half of Shuffle! was decent. Fate/Stay Night was pretty good all around.

I guess if I pick one I'd go with Kanon ('06). It was good and the episodes where

Makoto is slowly losing her humanity and finally dies/fades away was one of the most emotional bits of anime I can remember seeing.

There are probably more that I've seen, but don't know that they were based on visual novels or games since I'm not really into them. The only one I've played is True Love '95, which was actually pretty good, but that's never been adapted as far as I know.

Fate Stay Night ? Clannad ? H20 Footprints in the Sand ? actually, I choose almost none since usually the translation from the game to anime is really suck. But some of them are exception [ and a few is better than the originals ]

Fate/Stay Night is probably my favorite. I also enjoyed School Days and Clannad.

Air and EF - A Tale of Memories. I voted Air for characterization (not plot) and animation, A Tale of Memories for animation and style of presentation.

Most of the characters in Clannad don't make sense except the main guy. So I say it basically sucks. The plot and some lines by the guy are good though. Shame I really had high hopes for it.

utawarerumono is not really a dating sim/visual novel/bishoujo game, it's a hentai rpg (the game would have been great if we could have chosen a girl, i hate when the hero have fun with all the girl around him)
For me i think it would be Tsukihime, they have done a good job with it and the plot is decent for an adaptation in 12 episode, clannad was quite good too, fate stay night was strange they tried to mix all the different plot of the visual novel in one storie and the sex scene were wiped out of the anime and replaced by a kiss (in tsukihime you know they do it).

i'd like to have an adaptation of planetarian in 2 oav it would be so good (the only thing i have watched that made me cry was this visual novel).

I guess School Days.

It's the only one I've read so far that's based off of a Visual Novel/Dating Sim/Bishoujo Game.
