Just comparing Japanese shoujo manga with Korean shoujo-equivalent manhwa, I do see a lot more violence in the Korean - mainly things like teachers whacking/beating kids, and parents hitting/beating kids. I don't know if that's a cultural fact, or just a manhwa cliche, or what.

Manwha equivalents are often more violent against women as well, as I've seen. Hopefully it is just a manwha cliche and not a cultural fact.

Also, while some (many) Manwha's what I have read are rather confusing, I've probably read just as much manga with confusing plots (I take solace in reading Marvel and other such comics in that case.) In any case, Shin Angyo Onshi redeems any such complaints.

I think smut is a genre, like porn for girls and such. It's not about the story most of the time. Remember that sex scenes =/= smut. Maybe manhwa authors want to focus more on the story to attract readers instead of drawing straight-up porn (well, smut is not as straight-up as hentai but we still clearly know that its purpose is porn, be it "physical" or emotional porn lol).

We rarely find smut in manhwa, I think, because there isn't an established system and market for it? Like it's probably not an established genre yet unlike in manga. Maybe it's the censorship in South Korea? I don't know.

yes, i notice the thing about jjangs. but i've seen many manga w/ gangs in them too.

and women in manga are treated much worse than women in manhwa most of the time. take smut manga for instance, the girl almost always get raped by some guy.

and i think smut is rare in manhwa because S. Korea is still a fairly conservative country. (for example, i've heard ppl specifically referring to Japanese porn, but i've never heard ppl saying 'Korean porn'. okay im sure every country has their own adult industry but it seems Korea is not so popular in this aspect.)
so the Korean audience for smut is probably not very big and so the smut genre is not too popular there either.

p.s. i suggest you to try the manhwa SAVER !!! it has a very great story (not confusing at all) and characters are drawn very well (especially the guys __ )

Addressing the part where you don't see much smut/sexual stuff in Korean comics: It is because the government whatever bureaus/committees/groups/etc. have always traditionally been conservative and will not allow such material to be published. Only recently has violence and anything implying sex on Korean dramas been slipping through a bit. Also, only recently have music videos and k-pop groups become bolder and allowed to be a bit more "sexy". A lot of times certain direct references to sexually-related....items/events... are localized out into random off-the-wall crap in the Korean version of Japanese mangas with a lot of such content. Most of the adult Korean comics have not made their way onto sites such as this because in Korea you have to prove you're 18 before you're allowed to browse them online.

i always tought strange the way that in almost every manwha i've read all characters idolized gang members, with usually the hottest guy/main character's boyfriend being the strongest off all, that and even in the cutest shoujo the girl will get raped by the boyfriend's enemies...

edit: forgot to add that i said at the beginning of the post that almost all manwhas are that way because the rest are like ares and shin angyo onshi, who don't have gangs 🤣

I think those are just blatant cliches. If you watch Korean TV dramas, you will also find a lot of cliches. I guess those cliches are just what attracts the audience... Manga also have cliches. But the manga industry is developed enough to have more people take it seriously and draw some not that cliched stuff.

By the way, I don't like a lot of Korean shoujo art where the characters look way too skinny and weird but I am sure some people favour that kind of art.

😕 I've read a fair number of manhwa, and NONE of them contained that particular "plot element". Dunno what "cute shoujo" you're reading, but it's sure not the same stuff I'm reading.

I do see girls getting hit in the face or beaten up even in "cute shoujos" though.

About the smut, theres a lot of storyline but they just never bring up the subject 'sex' (like they do in manga where the boyfriend and girlfriend start talking about it or noticing it)

and in the manga where the girl gets raped by her boyfriend, i guess jap girls love rape scenes.

I have read a lot of manhwa, but there all shoujo, and there are some manhwa that are normal.

Especially Hwang Mi Ri works. Every freaking character is a delinquent, a jjang, or really good at fighting. The actual fighting looks pitiful though.

I agree with the part about Hwang Mi Ri. There's tons of her works out there. Most of them have the same kind of storyline. You have probably been reading those ones lol. All of her manwhas have jjangs, the girls also tend to be delinquents or good at fighting. The art is just plain ugly especially the girls and the guys obviously have to be bishies bu they look the same, just have different hairsttles and the fighting scense are actually really bad. I cannot believe there is a whole scanlation group devoted to translating her works.

I've read a few manhwa and frankly I only remember that its not manga is because of the names. Manga and manhwa are very similar with violence and "smut", the only significant difference I've noticed is that in some of the manhwa I have read the character design changes at some point. This is something I haven't really noticed in any of the manga Ive read.
