I'm a poor college student who can't even afford to go out for dinner with my friends, so of course I can't go to the bookstore and fork over the money for a volume that'll take me less than a day to read which is why I do most of my reading online. However, sometimes I can find really really great deals on Amazon.com. I just bought Skip Beat! volume 1 for...I think it was $0.02. Even with shipping and handling it was still less than $5...or maybe it was $5.01...Even I can afford that.

I buy my stuff from Pulp Fiction and Shin Tokyo. I don't get that much off, Pulp fiction takes a bit off for bulk purchase and Shin Tokyo has a member price. It's not that much. If you want any cheaper IMPORT FROM THE US direct.

i live in Brazil and here mangas cost around R$ 10,00 that would be almost U$ 20,00 so there is no way i can buy all the mangas that i like and are being published here 😔

Around here they cost about R$5,90, where do you live and what manga is that price?

i live in rio grande do sul, and its mangas like, chunchu, saint seiya g, mouse, and other that i cant remember now
edit: actually forgot to mention that this is the price per volume in a box, wich gets a discount, it is the price for the volume individualy is R$ 12,00

If you ask me... the reason why manga is so expensive in US is because they think Americans are stupid enough to buy it. If u ask me the mangaka would only get less then 1$ for each manga sold. The rest goes to the publishers, and the worst thing is they suck translating the manga.

Um, the publishing costs on manga aren't all that low to begin with-for each one you need an entire staff (translator, editor, plus the art department to put in fx-and if they're working with manga created before computers came into play, scanners, cleaners, etc.) plus even junkie paper has supply and publishing costs plus all that legal/licensing overhead. I figure the costs are at least on par with paperbacks-which are in the 6/7 dollar range. So to make enough of a profit for the title to be worth investing in-either enough people have to buy it at a very low profit margin (and that's gonna be a lot of people) or less people have to buy it at the higher margin. I'm sure for every Naruto, there are two or three titles that almost nobody is buying.

I'm gonna put in another order soon. Currently I'm limiting myself to titles that won't get scanlated/get scanned really slowly from the Tokyo Pop releases (I actually like a lot of orginal English stuff) and I stick to sales (last one I heard about through this site) and I always put in a big enough order to qualify for free shipping. Expensivish, but I don't go to movies.

We all know this. Its probably because some strange reason.

Well, in the US I guess they aren't THAT expensive.. Only 7.99 - 12.99. I guess thats decently priced... I guess.

I have a Barnes and Nobles Giftcard. =D I think I MIGHT buy a manga, if I don't spend the money on some real books instead.

I saw the price of Saint Seiya right now and it really is R$12... 😲 I am used to xxxHolic and FMA that cost R$6/5.90... and there is the JBC thing of splitting the volumes also... By the way I live in Gravataí 😀

Oohoho~ Over here, it's almost always $10+. Always. Tsubasa is around 16 bucks per volume -__-. Fruits Basket is around 12 - 16 bucks.Gintama was at 20 bucks once. It's ridiculous! FMA is $12+... Yet, the japanese version, is $8.90. Even with a free book, it was around 15 dollars. The list goes on. 😔

Where the hell do you buy your manga? In america, if you're buyin generic manga Viz is like 7-8 dollars, Tokyopop is like 10ish, Del Ray is from 8-10 and those other publishers go the HIGHESt to 12 dollars.
(note this is not if you're buying omnibus or color manga)

I just buy bleach cause I have a habit of rereading mangas and i like especially to reread bleach just for the funny moments and to refresh my memory. Although i have scans in my external drive it's still better to pick up the manga and open it rather than open my laptop. Anyways you can get hold of a volume here in my country at $9-10 each, however, the volumes out right now i think is up to volume 13 only. i got some of the volumes 14 and up in viz media and other online stores. so far the most expensive price is the one i got from viz media, that's 13.95 each. Luckily i just bought 2 that is bleach 19 and bleach 14, and its Viz media who sells this volume at a very low price since other online stores was expensive because of the weight of these 2 volumes which i think affects the shipping cost. The mangas i bought from other online store amounted to 11.98 each and the bulk of that price is is the shipping cost which is almost $10. I just go for what one of the poster here suggested and buy from abebooks.com. The price is only 10.18 to 10.50 and will ship in 7 to 15 days. I just ordered bleach 20. I got my new vol 21 and 22 at an auction and which cost 9.75 each. I just noticed that shojou mangas are more expensive than the shonen ones.

I think it's ok to buy manga so long as you really like the series. Me, I am just a bleach fanatic so i buy the manga. I even bought all volumes of the dvd out there and the original soundtracks.

I only manage go on a "manga shopping spree" after 3 mths after saving and scraping my own pocket money. The prices per book for shoujo's in my country are ranging 40 - 45... ==;; and yaoi...it can definitely hitch up to 60 ( the pretty ones ) per book ==;;

i would definitely to go starve myself to keep some stash to buy those pretty books eyes sparkles

but it come back to point where am i willing to actually spend on that amount for those books...and i would say hell yeah... i remember i spend $200 just on 4 books

yikes...but i LOVE the books xD

Yes, manga can be expensive, but you can find a way around it. I usually go to Borders to get my manga, and they send you coupons by e-mail when they're having a sale. I get to save 20-30% off manga each time it happens.
I save my money for a couple months until there's a book that I must have. That way, I'll feel satisfied every time I buy a manga, and think my money was well spent.

vy-chan: Manga shopping sprees are fun! Definitely worth the wait. I haven't been on one since I got my Christmas money. But yeah, I love those!

I think that manga was more expensive in the 90's. Back then a single volume cost $15.00-$20.00. The cheapest manga I've ever seen these days is a special scholastic edition of Yugioh. The retail price of that is only $4.95! I think the problem is that now there's so much manga to choose from and it would still cost a lot if you tried to buy as many different series as you could!
