like mellowmut, i can possibly try any manga as long as the description seems attractive, and there's no yaoi/yuri/shounen ai/shoujo ai/lolicon/shoutacon/hentai...

I go based on popularity I guess. I check out what ratings people give manga series on mangaupdates and animenewsnetwork.com, then read the first few chapters of that series online or somewhere. If I like it, I go download it or buy it if it is available in English. None of the other stuff really matters to me, since I primarily judge something based on itself, not who made it, what genre it falls under, etc.

Description is the main for me. I have several sites I get free non-download manga from, so sometimes I'll go around on their lists picking names and looking up the plot of the manga. I used to just go by names, but after Elfin Lied, I do not do that anymore. XD Naturally, I was really shocked. I mean, I was 8, people.
However, I also go by whats released most frequently, and whats available. Like, if a place only has two chapters of the manga, I won't read it even if it looks really good, because I wouldn't want to get hooked on something they only have 2 chapters of.

Well, I'd probably just try any manga, as long as it interests me.I haven't really read yaoi or yuri, but if it has a good story and art, I'll read it. 😁

Back then, I chose series by a whim.
Now, I'm more selective, so that I buy series that are more famous.

When voting, I selected genre, but I choose manga based on a number of things.
Obviously genre plays a large part when I'm looking for a new series to get into. I tend to stick to the genres I like best, although there have been a few instances where I was looking for something to read and ended up searching in a completely different genre than what I'm used to. I guess it all depends on my mood.
Another very important part in choosing a manga is the description. Even if the manga happens to be in the genre(s) I love, if the description doesn't sound like something I'd enjoy, I won't bother with it. Likewise, if I come across a manga in a genre I normally would stay away from and the description sounds interesting, I'll try it.
The only time I really care about the mangaka is if there's a series that I absolutely loved and I'm curious about their other works. That doesn't necessarily mean I'll enjoy them, though. There have been times when I thought one series was excellent but the rest of their works were terrible.
Sometimes I'll read the manga if the anime series was really good or if, when the anime ends, I'm left wanting more.
I usually don't do this often, but every once in a while I'll read a series based on a recommendation from a friend. That's rare, though.
And, lastly, sometimes I'll take a look through the most popular series just to see if anything captures my interest.

You didn't list title as an option for the poll. Shame really.
I pick by what's on the releases log. I check to see if any scanlator names pop out. Check out their titles. Then if I don't like the descriptions. I go back to the release log and choose by title then by description, cover, and/or mangaka.

I tried my best to purchase all manga. Everytime, I will pick those new volumes for "Wild Life", "Live", Godhand Teru", "Gimmick!", etc, all those old series. Then I purchase all new series, starting with volume 1. Finally, I will pick manga that finished in 1 volume according to my favorite author, then genre - horror, mystery, cooking, comedy, shounen, shoujo, yaoi and hentai.
The only manga that I don't buy are 4 columns strip.

I look for a manga with a smecksy girl on the cover. After that I look for a manga with scary stuff on the cover. I prefer my shojo to be full of boobies and my horror to be full of scary and gore.

I stalk the releases page! 🤣
When I don't have anything to read just go and pick some genre I feel like reading then order by rating and check any that has around 8 points or more. Or just get what I can get from the hosting sites I frequent.
