The original story was pretty good, except for the ending; shouldn't have ended that way, Light should have had a back up plan or seven, no matter how much pride and confidence he had, Light was always careful; like how he set his death note in the beginning that he had to use his pen to get to it otherwise it'll burn to bits.

Don't get me wrong though I hated the guy but I think the writer seriously screwed his character in the end there. How he acted in reaction to the cause (his loss) was perfect; but, the cause was weak:

substituted death note, his follower not running away with the names and writing it in a spare piece of the death note. When I watched this (I went anime first, which I must say followed the manga quite well) I thought that Light would definately have realized that the death note was switched already and framed the guy who previously had an afro by making his name absent on the death note. Guess the writer hated Light too ha ha

I like L better. Reason? Kira is too psychotic for my taste

I loved L. He was a genius complete genius. Light was crazy smart too but he had a apples and a shinigami to help him (so he's cheating LOL).

L's death should have been near the end and he shouldn't have been replaced by these little children. so depressing seeing your favorite character being surpassed by little brats. even light got beat by them like ughh. LOL but yea L is better than Light but not by alot.

I like L better because he's not as... deluded as Light, I mean they're both genius' but L is a bit smarter. Light just had the upper hand of a death note, had they been on equal terms L would have won, as evidence by his constant winnings in their little game of wits. Plus the author of Death Note even said that L is the smartest character of the series.

L, without a doubt. I find Light to be an immature and hypocritical (although scintillatingly intelligent and attractive) brat. /shot dead

I honestly would have dropped the series if L didn't appear in the nick of time. He's a quirky genius... a really fascinating character. I mean, just the way he sits to deduce clues is epic... Light, on the other hand, had this insanely massive ego and totally lost morals/ethics after killing so many... Light is a serial killer! That's BAAAAAAAAAAAD in my books!!

Though both L and Light's interactions (cat-and-mouse chase) kept my interests, L wins in my eyes.
