Let's just say that US security is probably better, but there are also probably a lot less crazies in Japan because Japan is small, and not a dominating power.

I haven't been there before. Don't really plan on going there unless I bother to learn the language, which isn't likely because I already know three.

Like with any country it depends what region you are in.

Also, I have never been to Japan, and the only reason I would go is for Tokyo Gameshow.

Trust what you want, but I'd say there are a lot more criminals in US.
Japan's main criminals are the Yakuza/gokudō and minor criminals.
US got some Mafiasos + gangs and even a lot of normal people are armed.
