They are both Solanaceae ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solanaceae ). They are from the same family and you probably meant tuber, not root, but it doesn't change the fact that it's from the same family as tomatoes.

Definition of a fruit is that you eat the thing that contains the seeds, and only the thing. For vegetables, you eat the stalks and roots, etc. So tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash are actually fruit eaten like vegetables.
